Title: October/Halloween Movie Watching List
Post by: hellbilly on September 16, 2009, 04:40:01 AM
Anybody down with this? We could list all our bad (or good) horror movie viewings for October in this thread. I managed 67 titles last year and my aim for this year is to top that.

Reguardless what many would think...

Halloween 3 (The Season of the Witch) is "A Christmas Story" of Halloween. You cannot find another story that as focus to the Halloween Holiday as Halloween 3.

(Yep Halloween 3 is more focus on the Halloween Holiday then the 1978 original or the Rob Zombies version)

:)

I think I'll dig out a few drive-in classics . . . maybe LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, MARK OF THE DEVIL.  Stuff like that.

THANK YOU! I've always said that SAME DANG THING!

I also think the original Night Of The Demons makes for PERFECT Halloween-time viewing. In some ways, I think it's a perfect Halloween movie, even moreso than the original Halloween. Halloween, after all, don't got an old dude living out the classic "razorblades in the apples" urban myth, now does it?

We watched this last week, 1st time I've seen it in well over a decade. Some of the effects are pretty outstanding, even if the story had a few cheese moments. On its on it stands as a very effective horror film. I like it actually better than any of the other sequels save Halloween II, and it has a truly chilling premise. It makes me wonder what could have been if Carpenter had stuck with his guns, and continued it as an anthology series instead of Michael Myers ad nauseam.

The Movie Is Pretty Good For A Kid's Movie , It's About A Girl Who Accidently Downloads A Ghost Through Her Computer , And She Makes A Deal With Him That She'll Help Him Set His Affairs In Order So He Can Move On To The Other Side , If He Helps Her Make Her Haunted House The Scariest For The Halloween Haunted House Contest

The Movie Captures The Spirit Of Halloween Through The Eyes Of A Little Kid

It Stars Ellen Page And That Guy Who Played Officer Garcia On  The Show RENO 911

Started my October viewings with two classics from 1973 - The Creeping Flesh and The Legend of Hell House. Haven't seen both in years and I really enjoyed the re-visit!

I haven't seen Night of the Demons but it's available for free On Demand so I'll have to check it out.  As for myself I'm going to try to at least watch these this month:

Something Wicked This Way Comes
Halloween (duh!)
The Haunting (1963)
Night of the Living Dead
Creepshow
Return of the Living Dead
The Blob (1958)
The House on Haunted Hill (1959)
Carnival of Souls
Night Tide
Dracula (1931)

10/02: "In The Name Of Satan" TRIPLE FEATURE

(http://image.allmusic.com/00/adg/cov200/drt500/t501/t50171pivz6.jpg) (http://image.allmusic.com/00/adg/cov200/drt600/t694/t69408e6eyr.jpg) (http://image.allmusic.com/00/adg/cov200/drt800/t829/t82944aywkp.jpg)

1. I Drink Your Blood (1970) Fun exploitation about a group of satan lovers injected with rabies.
2. Werewolves on Wheels (1971) Rowdy biker gang turned into werewolves by devil worshipers. A bit bland but still ok.
3. The Devil's Rain (1975) William Shatner Vs. Ernest Borgnine in a tale about good versus evil satanists. Cheesy goodness.

10/04: "Warner Premiere" Double Feature

(http://image.allmusic.com/00/adg/cov200/dru800/u850/u85018cbdrk.jpg) (http://image.allmusic.com/00/adg/cov200/dru800/u877/u87789p74vt.jpg)

The Hills Run Red (2009) - After seeing what this movie was actually about I'm convinced that Warners 'forced' R-Rating and the director complaining about it was nothing but a publicity stunt  That said, I really enjoyed this one. Much better than the usual DTV crap 4/5.

Trick 'r Treat (2008) Lucky me bought an early copy at a DVD convention today, sadly no Blu-rays though. But I'm fine with the standard DVD. Fun movie, not perfect but I'm still giving it 4/5.

Sssssss (1973)

Sssstill a fun 'Mad Scientist' flick even with Dirk Benedict's poor acting. I also love the educational first 30 minutes where the audience is told facts about venomous Ssssnakes. The Ending is a riot!
October/Halloween Score: 3/5 for including Mad Scientist, Animal Attack, Creature Effects, Sinister Experiments, Carnival Scene, Sideshow Scene, Slow Motion Shower Scene, Fight Scene, Skinny Dipping.

Horror Rises from the Tomb (1973)

Paul Naschy and friends lounge at an old mansion and encounter undead bloodthirsty ancestors. Entertaining over-the-top Eurotrash with splashes of gore and flashes of boobs.
October/Halloween Score: 5/5 for including Ghostly Vampiristic Creatures, White-eyed Zombies, Organ Music, Fog, Old Mansion, Lynchmob, Decapitation, Snowfall, Damp Autumn Atmosphere, Seance, Funny Dubbing, Robbery, Fight Scene, Sickle-Kill.

I kicked off my October viewing with Aerobicide (1986)

A slasher is loose at Rhonda's Workout club, and babes do aerobics in spandex and awesome '80s music plays!  It don't get no better than that  :teddyr:  No matter how many people turn up dead on the premises, the girls never let it interfere with their workout classes - they're just THAT devoted to fitness.  I don't seem to remember the cops conducting any sort of investigation, but maybe I was too distracted by all the babes.  The killer uses an oversized safety pin as the murder weapon.  A very solid 4/5.

All the horror movies I'll be seeing this month will be for my review blog.  As such, the movies I'll be watching this month are:

The Shaft (Just finished)
Sea Beast
Vampire's Night Orgy
Scooby-Doo (Live Action version)

and probably more.  I'll see what else I can did from my collection.

Don't Go in the House (1980)

A whimpy nutcase is torching ladies at his place. He is also hearing voices in his head and he is curious about the local Disco scene. Semi-grim and partially sleazy Psycho knock off.
October/Halloween score: 3.5/5 for including a chilly snowy atmosphere, Old Mansion, Disco Muzak, Drunk Chicks, Fight Scene, Awkward Behavior, Corpse Slapping, Crispy Undead Victims.

The Boogeyman (1980)

Brother and sister are haunted by childhood drama through an old mirror. Supernatural Uli Lommel Slasher with a farm setting, heaps of bad filmmaking and very memorable kill-scenes.
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including Amityville Windows on the farm house, Kitchen utensil skewering ala Carrie, Demonic Possession ala The Exorcist, Michael Myer-isms ala Halloween, Blouse Ripping, Unwanted Flashbacks, Dinner with a Priest, Kitchenknife Stabbing, Kitchen levitation, Slut-choke in Barn.

Forbidden World (1982) - Roger Corman's version of Alien.  An intergalactic bounty hunter dude gets a call from a remote genetic research laboratory - they've created a nasty little creature and oh golly gee, guess what it's doing now?  This movie doesn't really come within a country mile of being scary, but there are some rather gross special effects with half-dissolved people and stuff.  The characters are pretty good, except for one guy who's always coughing his brains out, that gets pretty annoying.  The main attraction is definitely the babes who work at the lab;  oh - my - god they're awesomely hot.  Lots of nudity in this movie as well  :teddyr:  Sorry, but my rating may be a wee bit biased because of that.  4/5.

Using Claw's format:

Sea of Dust (2009)

A mythological crusader king possesses the bodies of 19th century Germans to manifest his sadistic religious ideology in this world.  An attempt to recreate a Hammer-type period atmosphere; full of terrible acting and a heavy-handed anti-religion message, but if you can make it through the first half this flick goes truly crazy and turns into one of those "dreams inside of dreams" mindbenders.  Decent gore effects.

October/Halloween score 3/5 for Exploding head, lots of bodices, finger-sucking, dagger-in-shoulder, axe blade through back of head and out front, hook through chin, dilated eyeballs on crucified Tom Savini, pitchfork through head, flagellation, surgery on a hollow Ingrid Pitt, reverse birth, spandex cat-woman urinating on torture victims, and dream sequences, dream sequences, dream sequences.

Horror High (1974)

Nerdy boy is harassed at school but he has his revenge by drinking a serum that turns him into a deadly human guinea pig. Fun take on 'Jeckyll & Hyde' with a groovy blaxploitation-type of Soundtrack.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including Mad Scientist theme, Experiments gone awry theme, evil teachers, slow motion teasing, chest-jumping with spiked shoes, acid bath sizzle, corny theme song.

The Loreley's Grasp (1974)

Nerdy but hot Eurobabes at a boarding school are harassed by a reptile-like creature that turns out to be lovely Loreley going through her annual 7-night-curse. Entertaing Horror-Fantasy set at the river Rhine in Germany.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including nerdy but hot eurobabes, rubber suit monster, chest ripping, pitchforks & torches, foggy river footage, local Beer & Bratwurst restaurants, swampy marsh footage, ghastly howling at night.

The Redeemer (1978)

Six classmates meet for the reunion but a stranger is killing them off one by one. Weird but fun proto-slasher with a few wtf moments.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including creepy life-like doll, trapped in old school building setting, sink-drowning, lesbian kiss, evil altar boys, blowtorch burning, fight for gun.

Spawn of the Slithis (1978)

Organic mud enhanced with radioactivity spawns a creature killing people in Venice (California). A teacher with journalistic ambitions is doing the investigations. Neat but not very exciting monster flick with a great looking monster.
October/Halloween score: 2.5/5 for including PG gore, PG boobs, fat kid running in slow motion, teenage news junkies, showdown on a boat.

PG boobs are kinda rare. They look like normal boobs but PG boobs are only shown a few seconds
Plus these were also slightly 'obscured' with a red light.

Evil Laugh (1988)

Med-students fixing up an old orphanage must face a masked killer. Cheesy Slasher ripping off Friday the 13th which comes to no surprise as the director played Joey in A New Beginning. Talk about influence!
October/Halloween score: 3.5/5 for including isolated house, cleaning & dancing sequence, fangoria magazine, golden shower, dumb blondes, dumb jocks, microwave kill, machete kill, axe kill, blood spill, ghost story at fireplace.

Twice Dead (1988)

Family moves into haunted mansion and are harassed by local Lost Boys punks. Surprisingly decent revenge-thriller that reminded me of The New Kids with a touch of the supernatural.
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including Jill Whitlow, fighting at basketball court, car chase in hearse, coffin-toss, electrocution during sex, fat biker run over by own bike, ghost in mirror activity, forced suicide, memorabilia in the attic.

Primal Rage (1988)

Escaped lab-ape infects people with deadly virus turning them into zombified madmen. Fun bloodletting and above average soundtrack makes this Rambaldi family offering a keeper!
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including Sarah Buxton, night club dance scene, halloween party massacre, Mad Scientist theme, Experiments gone awry theme, Bo Svenson with ponytail, Bo Svenson kicked in the balls, car door rip, decapitation with axe.

Slaughterhouse of the Rising Sun (2005)

After a mental breakdown an actress joins a hippie-like group hanging out in the desert. They do drugs and talk about a House at the edge of the woods that supposed to be haunted. When The Manson Family meets Let's Scare Jessica To Death - entertaining 70s horror-homage that should please House of the Devil fans as well.
October/Halloween score: 3.5/5 for including inner monologues, trippy stew, ghost story at campfire, glowing eyes, glowing spirits, disembowelling, religious hitchhiker.

Boo (2005)

Four friends decide to hang out at a spooky old sanatorium on Halloween but evil spirits are spoiling their fun. Quality 'A' Indie Horror that is sadly overlooked. Solid genre effort delivering the goodies.
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including spooky old sanatorium, taking place on Halloween, exploding guts & gore, Haunted House theme, white ghosts, haunted elevator, Dee Wallace cameo, key-toss, flashbacks, pumpkin carving.

Vengeance of the Zombies (1973)

Woman seeks out Indian Guru for comfort while his disfigured brother is seeking out world domination with an army of undead chicks. Twisted Paul Naschy vehicle with weird soundtrack.
October/Halloween score: 3/5 for including slow motion zombies, strange nightmares, Paul Naschy as ze devil, axe kill, groovy London footage, voodoo gimmicks, undead rising from coffin, beercan (?) kill & toss.

Love Me Deadly (1973)

Young woman obsessing over her dead father finds solace by making love to dead men. Things get even more complicated when she joins a group of necrophiliacs and marries a man with the looks of her dead father. Surprisingly decent and tastefully filmed exploitation.
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including multiple flashbacks, horniness at the mortuary, corny theme song, "how we met" montage, face scratching, reading obituaries, gut spill.

Watched Forbidden World again last night, this time on Blu ray - oh yeah, the Blu ray looks MUCH better than the DVD  :teddyr:  Very sharp picture, much less hazy;  a bit grainy in spots, but anyone who's seen the DVD first won't mind that a bit.  The sound was mono though.  It was a clear and strong track, but jeez...most of my VHS tapes are in surround sound.  Get with the program already!

You also get a DVD of Mutant, which is the director's cut of Forbidden World.  Haven't watched that yet though.

The Evil (1978)

The devil lives in the cellar of an old mansion trapping and killing a group of people with his supernatural powers. The Evil is actually The Legend of Hell House told from a different angle. Not perfect but entertaining enough.
October/Halloween score: 3.5/5 for including Haunted house theme, demonic possession, supernatural storm, animal attack, friendly ghost, electrocution, thick fog.

The Comeback (1978)

Retired pop singer is working on a new album but nightmares, ghastly moaning and a killer with a sickle puts him on the edge of sanity. Proto-Slasher with a few haunts. Pacing drags very though but overall a fun watch.
October/Halloween score: 3.5/5 for including cheesy singing in a studio, cross dressing shenanigans, creepy masked killer, elevator kill, hearty british breakfast, sex in a car.

Galaxy of Terror (1981) - A spaceship crew is dispatched to a remote planet to...I dunno.  I guess another ship has crashed there?  They find this giant pyramid and once they go inside, they start dying in ways that are apparently related to their own fears.  I would think it would be a good idea to stay away from the giant pyramid, since it results in so many deaths, but apparently this doesn't occur to them.  Whenever they find a body of someone from the crashed ship, they disintegrate it immediately.  They even disintegrate their own crewmates as soon as somebody dies.     This is one of those movies that doesn't make a lick of sense.  I guess you're just supposed to go with it or something.  The characters are goofy - you've got Sid Haig as some sort of warrior dude who uses oversize throwing stars;  he just doesn't belong in this movie.  The captain of the spaceship is a nut who throws the thing into hyperdrive without telling anyone, then chuckles at them as they frantically try to fasten their seat belts.  The commander of the mission is a huge jerk, and then there's Mr. Hand from Fast Times at Ridgemont High;  he plays a cook who apparently is the only one who knows what the heck is going on.  Oh, and then there's Joanie from Joanie Love Chachi as some sort of psychic.

The art direction in this movie is really excellent - the spaceship is cool looking, and the pyramid has some pretty spectacular interiors.  The sets are far better than this movie deserves as well.  Overall, a great looking movie that doesn't make any sense, and it's stupid.  3/5.

The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009)

Two travelling girls in Europe get stuck in Germany, literally. At times funny but also uncomfortable "Naziploitation" (that's how it felt to me) with authentic german speaking. I quite enjoyed this.
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including Mad scientist theme, german autobahn, scalpel stabbing, cell phone-fu, sleazy german driving mercedes benz.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

Nancy has nightmares about a guy named Freddy Krueger. The rest should be familiar. This remake did change things around a bit but other than that it stayed pretty close to the original. Except for dropping the goat, which has always been a favorite of mine from the original's opening nightmare. Jackie Earle Haley was good.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including nightmare diner, funeral vision, in-and-out of dreams & reality, throat slitting, ceiling blood fountain.

Hatchet (2006)

I bought and watched the AB Blu-ray. Not a HD transfer that will knock you off your feet but it's clean and offers more detail during the darker scenes. And yeah, the movie still rules. Totally.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including Misty and Jenna (bless them!), Halloween prank gone bad, haunted swamp tours, puking girls, puking boys, puking madmen, animal attack, boobs attack, splashing guts & gore.

Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2007)

Jack is a student and plumber and because of childhood drama an aggressive individual as well. When his Professor at school turns into a Monster Jack turns into a certified Monster Slayer. This was very fun! I don't think they used any CGI at all, it was old school hand made effects all the way. Very entertaining creature feature.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including Robert Englund possessed by evil forces, raw meat eating, dog eating, tentacles from hell, monster head bashing, demonic slime infusion, throat punch.

The Amityville Horror (2005)

Family moves into new home and are tormented by speedy ghosts. Can dad's six pack abs of steel protect the family from evil? Kidding, even though those modern special effects don't seem to gel with the 1975 setting. Other than that this remake is fun and the Blu-ray comes with excellent quality.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including the hottest babysitter ever, haunted house theme, ghosts, wood chopping terror, creepy red balloon, flies attack, rooftop escape, escape with boat.

House of Wax (2005)

Six friends on their way to a football game are stuck in a tourist trap-like small town. The gas station owner turns out to be psycho and his disfigured twin brother runs the wax museum with real dead corpses. Neat remake by name only.
October/Halloween score: 3.5/5 for revealing Elisha Cuthbert's real height, for including graphic Paris Hilton death scene, cell phones that actually get a signal, fight scene in melting house, eyebrow waxing.

Dracula (1992)

Nice dark setting, interesting costumes and hand made effects. To me Anthony Hopkins stood out the most, his odd performance is always making me grin. The Blu-ray quality is a mixed bag though. It can look good/very good at times but never truly breathtaking HD great.
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including zoom on carcass, mini-exorcism with puking, child drop, chest sucking, climbing walls, sex with beast, garlic freak out.

Wolf (1994)

Jack Nicholson is growing hair on his hands and it ain't from masturbation. Equipped with developed wolf senses he must deal with job loss, sneaky colleagues and a cheating wife. When Michelle Pfeiffer comes on the scene it's mating season. Entertaining romantic thriller with a laid back Jack.
October/Halloween score 4/5 for including territorial p**sing, Michelle Pfeiffer slow motion toss, jumping Jack Nicholson, sleazy James Spader, deer hunt, horse barn showdown.

Dark Universe (1993) - A space shuttle is attacked by aliens - being a Fred Olen Ray film, I guess they didn't really have the money to film that.  Along similar lines, the entire ground crew consists of Joe Estevez.  By the 5 minute mark, you know for certain that you're in for a ride through the cheese festival  :teddyr:  Anyhow, this thing crashes to earth and a small group of clueless people is sent out to the Florida swamps to look for it.  The acting is pretty bad and for some reason everybody acts like they're mad at each other, even though most of the time there doesn't seem to be any reason for it.  The shuttle's pilot has been turned into a rubber monster, and he kills off the search party one by one.  This was borderline boring, but the oddball acting and dialogue kept me watching just to see if it would be worth a few more chuckles.  2.5/5.

Carrie (1976)

Screw the "bad" Blu-ray quality reviews of Carrie, this transfer looks fine to me. Hell, it looked even better than the Bram Stoker's Dracula blu.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including telekinetic ash tray flip, wobbling mirror with Hitchcock Psycho shower music, soft diffusion lenses scenes, split screen showdown.

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976)

Rynn is 13, new in town and lying about her fathers whereabouts. Townsfolk are curious but a crippled magician becomes her partner in crime and lover. Drama in Stage Play format with enough dark secrets to keep you guessing. Jodie Foster delivers great performance.
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including Halloween birthday party, pedo-alert, hamster torture, poisoned tea switch, chipped tooth, magic tricks, muddy footprints, autumn setting, early snow, nosy cop.

Scarecrows (1988) - A group of soldiers steals 3.5 million in cash from their military base (I bet you didn't know they kept that kind of cash lying around on military bases, did you?  See, you learn stuff from watching movies  :teddyr: ).  They force the pilot of a small cargo plane to fly them to Mexico, but one of the thieves decides he wants it all for himself, so he bails out with the money and lands on a small farm, which has lots of spooky scarecrows all over the place.  It's not long before the remainder of the gang forces the pilot to land the plane on a nearby road, and then it's a creepy scarecrow free-for-all.  This way pretty good overall - somewhat creepy atmosphere, lots of yucky and fairly creative gore, and the action moved along a a fair pace.  It's biggest failing was that I didn't really care if everybody got killed, the character were somewhat developed, but not terribly sympathetic.  Except for the pilot of the airplane - she was incredibly hot!  I'll be a little generous and give it a 4/5.

Jack - I notice you frequently judge movies partly on the hotness of the women in them. This has me wondering how much enjoyment you would get out of these movies if you woke up one day with an inability to feel (I'll use a polite word) desire.  I'm not criticizing, I'm just honestly curious.

Deadly Blessing (1981)

Woman and her two friends are being terrorized on a farm by an unknown killer. Meanwhile a religious community that would make the Amish appear like swingers are calling outsiders the Incubus. Fun & original horror from Wes Craven who would later incorporate several Deadly Blessing ideas into A Nightmare on Elm Street.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including Lois Nettleton as Louisa, spider drop into Sharon Stone's mouth, dry bed hump, creepy paintings, coffin chicken, driving lessons, untamed passion, dog attack, fight in bedroom.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)

Bubba, a mentally limited man is accused of killing a little girl. Bubba is lynch-mobed but returns as a Scarecrow to have his revenge. I must admit this film didn't do much for me on my first viewing back in the day. And I was more than surprised finding out that Dark Night of the Scarecrow has such a dedicated following. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, as I have seen made for TV movies that had more impact on me and left a stronger impression. But I've always appreciated DNOTS enough to buy this DVD. It makes for a fun October viewing.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including Halloween party, pumpkin field showdown, grave digging, shovel kill.

The eye candy is like anything else in a film, it's one factor in the overall enjoyment, or lack thereof.  My main thing is if the characters are likable, which doesn't mean they need to be nice, but they need to have human-like personalities, which tend to be unique,  and you can't fully sum them up in one or two words.  If I don't care if these people live or die, the film is a total failure for me.  And then there's the atmosphere and suspense, since I watch a lot of horror.  Am I drawn into the movie, or is it just stuff happening on the screen, sending me into fits of yawning?  I've kind of given up on interesting stories, since almost everything I watch follows a simple formula.  Then there's the pacing of course;  am I watching paper thin characters that I dislike prattling about crap that has nothing to do with moving the plot forward, just because they had a 45 minute screenplay but the movie needed to last 90 minutes?  And then there's the overall quality of the production - is it done in a professional manner where the technical stuff is completely transparent, or am I laughing at the special effects, chuckling at the "actors" annunciating each syllable of their lines, getting annoyed with the terrible sound mix, rolling my eyes at the potpourri of ideas stolen blatantly from other movies?

When you're talking about low budget movies, the quality in all these areas tend to somewhat lower than one might ideally prefer, so if they give the audience a bit of eye candy to make up for that, I certainly appreciate it.  It's more or less expected I think.  I could pick up the DVD of a 100 million dollar Hollywood movie, so why should I buy your 2 million dollar movie instead?  Oh, you've got totally hot babes in your movie.  Okay  :teddyr:  Bottom line - there's a reason that sooooo many B movies feature hot babes, and it's not because only 1% of the audience cares about that stuff.

Creature of Darkness (2009) - Some young people go out to the woods for a camping trip and to ride their ATV's around.  There's gonna be an "unfortunately" in there somewhere  :teddyr:  and unfortunately, there's an alien out in them thar woods, and he's collecting humans.  Or just killing them.  Disclaimer:  I was having a few beers while watching this, which probably made ALL the difference.  The characters started out as a rather unlikable bunch, but they sort of grew on me, especially after the monster thinned out the most detestable of them.  I thought the plot moved along at a pretty good pace, which is a rather noteworthy accomplishment for this sort of movie.  The monster, oh jeez.  Either in the plastic mask or the CGI version, he was rather hilarious.  The special effects lived up to the same standard.  But the characters actually rose above the usual "idiots getting killed idiotically" cliche and developed a bit of a plan to fight back.  I enjoyed this quite a bit  :teddyr:  4/5.

Rosemary's Baby (1968)

Young couple encounter witches and satan in new apartment building. Classic thrills that still delivers the goods.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including surreal nightmares, body painting, nude coven, devil chant, asian tourist with camera, black cradle, breast milk, awful vidal sassoon hairdo.

Let's Sare Jessica to Death (1971)

Young couple + friend encounter ghostly vampire in new old house by the lake. Just like good wine this one gets better with age.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including Mariclare Costello as Emily, zombified townsfolk, scary stuff in the water, stuffy attic, dead mole, poison apples, seance, inner monologue, whispering voices, electronic score.

Don't Look Now (1973)

Young couple in Venice are haunted by the spirit of dead daughter. A blind psychic predicts an unhappy ending though. Excellent psychological horror that almost could have been a great giallo too!
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including chilly Venice, white rats, dooming red color, psychic breast rub, extended sex, eerie canal travel vision.

Hatchet (2006) - some people go on a scary boat tour of the haunted swamps of Louisiana.  The boat sinks and they end up getting chased around by a deformed psycho killer.  This is one of those "funny" horror movies;  they're very rarely successful even when the humor is clever, but this one is borderline Dumb and Dumber.  Definitely not my type of movie at all.  1.5/5.

Paranormal Activity (2007)

The later the evening, the more effective the movie. And yeah, my name is still listed in the end credits. I never get tired of mentioning that  :teddyr:
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including things that go bump in the night.

The Mist (2007)

People trapped in a supermarket must fight bizarro creatures from beyond hidden in the mist. Unsettling because religious people are actually scarier than the monsters.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including wandering mist, bloody rope tug, tentacles, giant bugs, neck swelling, preaching.

Banshee!!! (2008) - Some people go on a camping trip, but as it turns out there's a Banshee!!! running around killing people in the woods.  They eventually take refuge in a house with some other would-be Banshee!!! victims.  For a CGI creature, it was a little bit cool looking.  It could also take the appearance of any person it had seen, which made for a pretty good device to add some excitement to the movie.  The characters were a fun bunch, this is definitely a cheese fest - the monster is very sensitive to loud sounds, and one of the characters plays electric guitar - need I say more  :bouncegiggle:  It wasn't your typical cookie-cutter movie, the creators had their own ideas and didn't copy the usual formula verbatim.  Taken with a few adult beverages, I liked it:  4/5.

His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th (2009)

Documentary about the one and only, even though this felt more like an extended 'making-of' promo reel. I did appreciate the interviews with everyone involved with the movies but I honestly didn't care much about the 'internet-celebs' and what they had to say. Still made for an ok watch.
October/Halloween score: 3/5 for including Felissa Rose and bad Tom Savini segments.

Dark House (2009)

A group of young actors are invited to perform in a Funhouse event but the place is actually haunted by the spirit of a nasty ghost. Pretty slick indie horror that looks like a million bucks. I quite enjoyed this one.
October/Halloween score: 3.5/5 for including Diane Salinger, haunted house theme, CGI blood splatter, lesbian drooling, ghost taking over computer, windows xp jokes.

George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead (2009)

Survivors of zombie apocalypse are heading to island inhabited by some crusty leader. I went in with low expectations and came out not hating it. The only thing really bad was the Romero intro on the blu-ray. Survival of the Dead worked for me though and it went down smoother than Diary of the Dead.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including humor, CGI splatter, underwater zombies, zombie riding horse, zombie driving car.

I didn't see this thread quite early enough.

Today I watched the John Barrymore 1920 version of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde.  It was decent - I liked the look of this Hyde, and some of it was nicely shot.  VERY lethargic pace though - I gather there's a 59 minute version, and I expect it'd be much better.  6/10.

I also saw I Spit On Your Grave (the original 1978 version).  I'm not really sure what to say about this one.  Extremely brutal I guess.  Unpleasant.  Often effective.  It's not the completely sloppy POS a lot of people deride it as though.  On the IMDB I ended up giving it a 6/10, but it's a difficult film to apply any rating to.

Also this month I've seen:

I Sell the Dead (7/10)
Friday the 13th (7/10)
Friday the 13th pt 2 (6/10 - I liked it a lot more than the first time I saw it)
Subspecies (4/10, very disappointing after being interested in it for so long)
Monsturd (4/10 - a few good jokes but most of it was just plain dull)
Deranged (7/10)
Tombs of the Blind Dead (5/10)
Carnival of Souls (6/10)
The Changeling (8/10)
Exorcist III (5/10)
Baby Blood (6/10)

So I've seen thirteen horror films this October.  My goal every October from now on is to see at least 31 - I think I can manage it this year.   :teddyr:

Carnival of Souls (1962)

Female organ player survives car accident but is haunted by zombified ghosts. Big revealing showdown at abandoned fair. Creepy cult classic always perfect for October viewing.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including abandoned carnival, dancing undead, haunting organ music, peeping tom.

The Last Man on Earth (1964)

A deadly virus wipes out the entire population by turning humans into zombified vampire creatures. One scientist appears to be immune but soon enough he finds other survivors. Grim terror with a little cheese and a superb Vincent Price.
October/Halloween score: 3.5/5 for including burning pit for dumping bodies, undead best friend with a grudge, daughter turning blind, super 8 home movies.

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

The dead rise and feast on the living. Classic stuff but I always forget how lethargic the Barbara character is. I really prefer the Night of the Living Dead 1990 Barbara.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including Duane Jones taking charge, overall apocalyptic feeling, first nude zombie (I think).

Amok Train (1989) - A group of American college students go to Serbia for some sort of class trip, but as luck would have it, the professor they meet there is actually Satan's right-hand man, and one of the college girls is destined to be ol' Beelzebub's bride.  The group manages to escape from the professor's trap and get on a train, which soon becomes possessed by Satan and takes them for quite a merry little ride.  Okay, when was the last time you saw a train jump its tracks, drive through a lake, take out a couple of people in a fishing boat (decapitating one of them and sending her head flying into the air), then drive out the other side of the lake and get back on its tracks?  This is a pretty cool and weird movie overall.  They manage to create a real feeling of isolation, and being extremely far from home out on the cold yet beautiful Serbian plains.  There's not a lot of dialogue, and the majority of what there is is spoken in Serbian with no subtitles, which further enhances the feeling of bleak loneliness.  And then there's those special effects - a model train (very obviously) doing the most insane things that  it's hard not to laugh.  I guess you have to be in the mood for this thing.  I was and I enjoyed it quite a bit.  4/5.

Yesterday I watched the Wings Hauser film Mutant. Yeah.  It was...  OK.  Competently shot and a few entertaining scenes and whatnot...  5/10.

I also watched The Gorgon.  Hammer film with Lee/Cushing.  As usual, Lee has way less screen time than Cushing, but Lee is actually a hero in this one.  Pretty bad effects for the title character, though it isn't seen much.  Starts out quite good, but it really takes way too long to go anywhere - felt like it could have been a half hour shorter.  Well-acted and a good score.  6/10.

Finally, I also saw The Undertaker and His Pals.  After a quite amusing opening scene and some bad puns, the film slows down to much and not a lot happens in too many scenes.  For such a short and simple film (it's just over an hour) it's also surprisingly confusing.  Some more bad puns and a few gore shots (rare for a mid 60s film) combined with a pretty funny and random ending did make it worth a watch, but I don't think I'd watch it again.  5/10.

Evil Dead II (1987)

My first time HD viewing. I didn't expect to be blown away and indeed the quality doesn't seem to differ much from the DVD, except for the climax when the colors explode on screen. The Blu-ray also offers a little more fine detail but pore-freaks will be underwhelmed.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for being ... Evil Dead II.

Prince of Darkness (1987)

Students spend the weekend in an old church analyzing green swirling goo inside a huge mixer. Crafty thrills from Carpenter that still holds up these days.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including apocalyptic feeling, Alice Cooper as a bum, slime puking, transmissions from the future, mirror doorway, ants, bugs, dead dove.

The Boogeyman (1980) - A couple of children are mistreated by their drunken mother's boyfriend, so one of the kids kills the boyfriend.  Flash forward 20 years and, in case you missed that stuff that happened about a minute ago, they show you the whole thing again in flashbacks.  Oh for chrissakes, I just saw this!  Anyhow, the kids are grown up, the boy hasn't spoken since that night 20 years ago, and the girl is haunted by nightmares;  you know the drill.  The psychiatrist suggests they go back to the scene of the murder so the girl can overcome her fears, but instead she sees the reflection of the creepy boyfriend in the mirror.  She breaks the mirror, douchebag husband gathers up the pieces and brings it back home with them - he's completely ignorant of the fact that he's in a horror movie.  This is actually a haunted mirror movie, not a boogeyman movie.  Shards of the broken mirror glow red and cause terrible things to happen.  Then people talk about the terrible things.  And talk, and talk.  It's pretty slow paced.  But it is from 1980, so it has a nice low-budget horror atmosphere to it at least.  The main girl is quite likable and carries the movie.  Overall this was moderately entertaining, despite my frequent bouts of yawning.  3/5.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Aliens take over the world by replacing humans with emotionless duplicates. Classy Sci-Fi that looks great on Blu-ray.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including frontal Brooke Adams nudity, priest on a swing, dart-kill, kicking pod.

Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Zombies take over the world but four people are hiding out in a shopping mall. Here's still hoping for the Ultimate Blu-ray.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for being ... Dawn of the Dead.

Prom Night 3 (1990) - Mary Lou Maloney was the prom queen back in 1957, but she died in some freak accident.  I think this was covered in Prom Night 2, but I haven't seen that movie in about 15 years.  In the present time, we meet out main character, Alex.  He's a very average high school student, but dreams of better things.  He meets the ghost of Mary Lou, and next thing you know, he's become the star player on the football team.  And he's getting the best grades in the entire school.  And he's doing a hot ghost babe.  The only problem is that Mary Lou has a habit of killing anyone who stands in Alex's way, so he has to spend his nights burying dead bodies under the football field.  Alex is pretty much okay with this - all relationships have their problems, right?  But Mary Lou eventually gets too possessive, killing his best friend, and then she's jealous of Alex's human girlfriend.  We're headed for a climax of truly B movie proportions.  This was a dark comedy all the way, and a pretty clever one at that.  I actually chuckled - twice!  It's pretty rare that I can tolerate a horror comedy, but this one managed to keep my interest by maintaining at least a semblance of seriousness.  Sort of.  The characters were quite good;  well developed and likable.  The plot moved along at a good pace.  Oh and the DVD - it's the edited for TV version  :bluesad:  Who knows if this ever had nudity in it.  I certainly don't.  The swear words were replaced by really stupid words.  Still, I got a moderate amount of entertainment out of it.  3.5/5.

Love Object (2003)

Young man falls in love with sex doll made up to look like his new co-worker Lisa. The doll becomes jealous when he goes on a date with Lisa. Fun little f**ked up movie about sick obsessions.
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including Udo Kier, sleazy website, tense daymares, s&m action.

High Tension (2003)

Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil (1992) - Back in '57, an insane priest kills some kids at the school prom because he disapproves of their immoral behavior.  The church keeps him locked up and sedated for 30 years, but the priest who's in charge of guarding him is getting old, so they appoint a new guy to take over the position.  Of course this guy is too smart to keep him sedated, he wants to talk to him.  Yup, he lasts for about 24 hours.  Meanwhile, two young couples go to a mountain cabin for a weekend of fun.  It's not long before psycho priest shows up, and he disapproves of their immoral behavior as well.  This is one of the best old-style slashers I've seen in several years.  It focuses on suspense, the characters are very likable and fun, and although it isn't exactly the most fast paced movie out there, I really enjoyed it.  4.5/5.

Lessee...  In the past couple days I've watched:

The Manster - Generally entertaining late 50s B-film, about a guy who gets experimented on.  Changes his personality, and eventually he grows a monkey head and kills people in Japan.  This one gets massively referenced in Army of Darkness, of all things.  Well-acted for the most part, but even at 72 minutes it felt a bit long towards the end.  6/10.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning.  Not nearly as awful as I remember it, but still a lesser entry in the series.  It's mind boggling to me how much this film had to get cut - the gore/violence left would probably be PG-13 level today (minus one or two bits).  Huge body count too, well over 20.  But the lack of a real Jason, a couple ludicrous side characters (the rednecks), some so-so acting...  I dunno, it's OK, and the pacing is alright.  6/10, but barely.

Superstition (1982) - I don't know why this one isn't talked about more.  Early 80s supernatural slasher that starts out really good, with a quickly rising body count and some good gore...  Then kinda goes no where, and has a bunch of lame kills and VERY poorly developed characters.  It was still worth a watch for the first half hour or so, and some cool looking cinematography.  Well-made, just needed better writing and some better kills in the last half.  Could have been a classic, which is a shame..  6/10 (lots of those lately, huh?)

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter.  Possibly my favorite of the paramount films, this one delivers everything you could want.  Tons of nudity, some great kills (the hacksaw twist might be my favorite in the entire series), good pacing, Crispin Glover's dance, a memorable climax, etc.  8/10.

Friday the 13th part 3: The 3D entry.  Yeah.  I enjoy this one, probably my second favorite of the Paramount films.  I think this is the best looking of the pre-zombie Jasons, minus the mask.  Some good kills - the leg split is just OUCHY.  Slows down a bit in the middle, but the final battle is real good, and the final girl in this one is my favorite (she's the only one who tries to coup de grace Jason, just for that she gets points in my book).  7/10

Night of the Demons - Probably the single most iconic 80s horror film I hadn't yet seen.  It was pretty enjoyable.  The kid brother of the main girl in the opening was hilarious, best character in the movie.  Some good gore.  The lipstick trick was pretty cool.  Oh yeah, and a black guy makes it through the WHOLE MOVIE.   :buggedout:  7/10

The Hunger (1983)

Beautiful Vampiress residing in New York seduces female doctor. Intriguing and stylish. Mainstream arthouse horror? Either way, great movie.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including cannibalistic monkeys, throat slitting, lesbian eroticism, underground night club, mummified undead attack.

Christine (1983)

Evil car takes over nerdy student turning him into an arrogant ass. Laid back thrills based on Stephen King directed by John Carpenter. Still a fun ride that holds up.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including 1978 setting, lunch stabbing, Christine on fire, monster truck showdown.

Army and Doctors constantly clash in an underground lair while hiding out from zombies. Romero's third undead epic is a cold and lifeless affair with outstanding gore.
October/Halloween score: 3.5/5 for including Bub, gut spill, machete amputation, head drill, nightmares, alligator, calendar displaying October.

The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Toxic army waste brings back the dead and they are hungry for brains. This looks great on Blu-ray!

Last night I saw Return of the Vampire.  Quite disappointing for the first film to have a werewolf (who can talk) and a vampire, played by Bela Lugosi - who considering how little we see of him, probably shot his role in like 4 days.  It was watchable, but it was boring.  Very boring and dull.  And that's impressive for a film that runs just 70 minutes.  A few nice bits of humor, and it has the classic foggy and cool-looking graveyard and sets.  Not enough.  4/10.

Today I finished off my Friday the 13th box set...

Part VI: I've always enjoyed this one.  The kills are relatively tame in gore, but still have some visceral impact at times (and the back breaker - OUCH!).  The notable touches of humor are really appreciated.  The guy who plays Jason in this one is also good.  Tommy is an OK lead character, and the pacing is good.  The best of the "zombie Jason" Paramount films.  7/10.

Part VII: This was actually considerably better than I remembered.  Jason looks great in this one - visible bones, obviously partly rotted, and when you see his face it's the best of the "zombie" Jason faces we see clearly in ANY of the films.  The film has obviously been HEAVILY cut, and I've seen the uncut versions of most of it online - it's a shame, as it would have really helped out with the kills, which are still OK but that's about it.  Kane Hodder makes a very good Jason too.  Not a great film, but entertaining enough.  Just barely a 7/10.

Part VIII: Wow, what a stinker.  Just as bad as I remembered, easily the worst in the entire series (sorry, part V is watchable and less dull).  The worst kills in the series, and almost no visible gore at all.  No likable characters AT ALL.  New York is only in the last half hour, and several long sequences are on sets.  And for some reason, Jason can teleport now.  It's just bad.  The only redeeming qualities: Kane Hodder is still a good Jason, the boxing punch kill, and the occasional light touches of humor towards the end.  Still, it's really quite bad.  2/10.

Watched this weekend:

Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (1978) - The remake with Donald Sutherland, and an interesting appearance by Leonard Nimoy. I saw this when it was out in the theatres. Was I underage? Let's just say I snuck in. It freaked me out back then, and there are still things about it that creep me out to this day, not the least of which are the NON-CGI SPECIAL EFFECTS! 4/5

Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959) - Just couldn't resist this classic about "future events in the future." 4.5/5

Daughters of Dracula (1974) - First time with this one, about a couple of bisexual vampires in England who lure victims to there rather fancy estate in the countryside, and who, strangely, didn't appear to have fangs, because I don't recall once where they actually bit their victims, instead opting to cut or stab them and drink the blood from the wound. The budget was miniscule, so my guess was they had plenty of fake blood, a cast willing to get naked often, and a lack of fang effects. Very cheesy and British. 3.2/5

Still in the queue to be watched by the end of the month:

Bride of the Monster (1955)
The Crazies (1973)
Nosferatu (1922)
White Zombie (1932)
The Hunger (1983)
Countess Dracula (1971)
Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972)
The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1962)

Friday the 13th part 2 (1981) - One of my favorite slashers of all time, but I've seen it sooooooo many times at this point.  Still found it to be good though.  Likable characters, some good atmosphere, pretty nice kills.  They seem to cram a lot of movie into 90 minutes.  I don't think there's a boring minute in this.  It used to be a 5/5, but after a dozen viewings, it's more like a 4/5 for me now.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

Invasion of the kooky kind: evil clown aliens set up camp in a small town and cocoon people with cotton candy. Fun Sci-Fi Horror with crazy special effects and cool theme song.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including popcorn gun, balloon dog, decapitation, corpse dummy, human cotton candy drink.

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (1988)

Elvira discovers that she is actually a witch in this fun comedy. I never get tired of watching this one as it just constantly delivers the goods.
October/Halloween score: 5/5 for including Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, pot luck orgy, pot luck surprise, hot dog cleavage drop.

Jason Goes To Hell: Yeah, the new mythology is poorly explained and really doesn't fit well with the rest of the series AT ALL.  I also just don't like it conceptually.  But taken on its own merit, I find it a reasonably entertaining B-horror film.  7/10.

Howling III: Wow.  Incredibly incoherent, with some AWFUL acting.  Only the scientist guy and the old director were good.  Horribly placed humor.  Flacid, out-of-place "horror" scenes.  PG-13 werewolf flick with a high body count?  Yeah ok.

Just all over the place.  Deliberately places itself in the Howling universe with a couple references, then ignores its mythology.  I liked a few concepts in here, and it was nice to see a movie with werewolf leads who weren't all bad for once...  But, yeah, it's really bad.  2/10.

House (1986)

Novelist spends time in his dead aunts house to write about Vietnam but ghosts, goblins and a portal to another dimension is of much distraction. Entertaining spookshow. Innocent 80s? random neighbor leaving her son in the care of a total stranger to babysit seems very odd these days. He bathes the kid, too  :bluesad:
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including haunted house theme, vietnam flashback, flying tools, body parts gone wild.

Witchboard (1986)

Young woman communicates with friendly ghost which turns out the be the evil spirit of a serial killer. Fun Ouija Horror with a back then saucy Tawny Kitaen.
October/Halloween score: 3.5/5 for including Demonic possession theme, flying ouija board, oddball psychic, spirit POV, supernatural storm, seance.

Today I saw The Legend of Hell House.  It was fairly decent.  Some good suspense and a few good scares, good acting.  Didn't really stand out a whole lot, but worth a watch.  7/10

I also saw the Zanti Misfits episode of the Outer Limits.  The Zanti themselves were effectively creepy, but I thought the episode was so-so and the "moral tale" at the end ludicrous.

The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942) - After spending some time entombed in a sulfur pit, The Monster is back, and Ygor takes him to Dr. Frankenstein (the son of the original Doctor).  This guy is a brain surgeon, so the plan is to replace the monster's defective brain with a good one.  As you may have guessed, there are complications.  I really liked this, it drew me in right from the beginning and the plot was pretty fast paced, which kept me interested through to the end.  The characters were well developed and sympathetic, and the special effects budget must have been quite large.  I'll give it a 4.5/5.

Cat People (1982)

Young woman can only have sex with brother because both are dangerous cat people. Love the New Orleans setting. It adds so much to the atmosphere. And David Bowie's theme song is a timeless classic.
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including Lynn Lowry, cat-ly behavior, wicked transformation, arm-rip, nude Nastassia exploring wildlife.

The Sender (1982)

Suicidal young man in mental clinic sends disturbing telepathic images. Underrated psychological thrills wrapped in engaging and original story.
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including rats, fire, surreal dream-like imagery, fun patients, TV demolition, slow motion window crash, car chase without driver.

Feast (2005) - Gruesome monsters attack the patrons of a bar.  Despite their efforts to blockade the windows and doors, their numbers still keep dwindling with great rapidity.  I said a while back that there were only about 4 horror/comedies that I liked (truthfully I guess it's closer to 6 or 7), well, add another one to the list!  This movie actually made me laugh - not chuckle or smirk, but downright laugh.  How can you not like something that introduces one of the characters as "Name:  Granny.  Fun Fact:  Has blown Mick Jagger...recently.  Life expectancy:  May already be dead."   :bouncegiggle:  The characters are very colorful and likable, but no matter how many witty remarks they make, it doesn't change the fact that they're in a truly life-and-death situation against some very brutal and bloodthirsty creatures, so the horror aspect is very much alive and well despite the humor.  4.75/5.

Brownstone Terror: Young Model encounters strange neighbors and creepy noise from the apartment above. When she sees her undead father all hell breaks loose. "What do you do for a living? - We fondle each other."
October/Halloween score: 4.5/5 for including coffee table orgasm, b&w nightmares, guinea pig on naked flesh.

Demon Seed (1977)

High-Tech Terror: Young woman is held captive in her own house by super-intelligent computer who wants to be a daddy. Thrilling sci-fi that will and still delivers.

I watched House on Sorority Row via Netflix on Demand.  I thought this started out quite well, and is interesting as being the film I'd say the "victims" most deserve to get killed off in in any slasher film I can remember.  But there's no real acceleration or increase in pacing towards the end, and then it's kind of over quick.  Weak ending, basically.  6/10.

Feeding Grounds (2006) - A group of extremely unlikable characters head out to the desert for a weekend of arguing, fighting, and a whole lot of standing around doing nothing.  Eventually some mysterious creature shoots them with little darts, causing them to argue and fight even more obnoxiously, and stand around doing nothing a whole lot while acting really wasted.  It also makes them extremely ill, and they all barf up green goop.  That's pretty much the movie.  We never see the monster, just a quick glimpse of its hand a couple times.  We get no explanation of anything.  By the end the kills consist of showing a sick guy, then the camera moves to the girl next to him, then back to the guy - oh, he's not there any more.  Then some blasting loud music starts playing and the credits roll.  And the entire freakin' movie is out of focus.  This was made in 2006;  I thought we'd moved beyond using hand cranked cameras.  I guess the theme music was good, it set a spooky mood.  And we get to hear lots and lots of it as our sick characters stumble around and do nothing.  1.5/5.

Creatures from the ocean terrorize small coastal town and rape women. Solid monster flick that looks great on Blu-ray.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including annual salmon festival brawl, explosions galore, misty setting, face ripping, squirting blood, thick hairdo's.

The Island (1980)

Father and son on vacation are kidnapped and held captive on island by Pirates. Not really "Horror" but I totally dig the slasher-like opening und gruesome kills. The German DVD presents the film with a great transfer.
October/Halloween score: 4/5 for including jellyfish attack, head split with axe, slashed throats, bad dental hygiene.

House of the Dead 2 (2005) - Zombies take over a college campus, and the military is called in, along with a couple of zombie hunting specialists.  They need to find the original zombie, patient zero, and get a blood sample in order to create a vaccine.  This is a favorite of mine, a fun throwback to the '80s with cheese galore and some really likable characters, especially Emmanuelle Vaugier and Ed Quinn in the lead roles.  The plot moves along well, there's plenty of gut munching gore, Sticky Fingaz gets his entire head blown off (early in the movie, thankfully), ah heck - you name it, it's got it  :teddyr:  4.5/5.

The Thing Below (2004) - a CGI monster is loose on an offshore oil rig (which is actually a top secret government research lab).  So a group of...I dunno what these people are.  The crew of a tugboat apparently?  Are sent in to search for survivors.  They turn into commandos once they arrive at the oil rig.  The monster can cause them to have hallucinations, so when they're distracted with that, it impales them with its CGI tentacles.  This was sooooo predictable - we're told that one woman lost her husband and son in a train wreck.  Wonder what her hallucination will be?  Another guy dresses like Roy Rodgers, another has pictures of a porn actress all over his room.  Ah, the suspense.  I guess the characters were moderately well done.  The CGI was just comically unbelievable.  I made it to the end though   :teddyr:  2.5/5.

Blades (1989) - a parody of Jaws which takes place on a golf course.  A rogue lawn mower is on the loose at the local country club;  of course they can't shut the place down because the big tournament is taking place that weekend.  The two golf pro's investigate.  The lead guy is the most dull and uncharismatic character I can ever remember seeing in any movie.  Oh man this was boring and not funny.  Typical Troma rubbish.  At least the people in the movie took everything seriously and didn't act like they were in a comedy.  1.5/5.

Last night I saw the Howling 2.  Wow.  What a bad movie.  It was a lot more entertaining and coherent than the Howling 3 though.  Some REALLY bad acting from some characters, though of course Christopher Lee was solid enough.  It retcons the first Howling film in stupid ways - which is a shame, as the ending of the first Howling film could have generated interesting sequels.  It's the oldest horror film I'm aware of where an event occurs that would let everyone know the existence of supernatural monsters worldwide.  But no, they say in the film the footage of Karen White was never broadcast (despite their being a series of reaction shots of viewers at the end of the film).  And now werewolves are from Transylvania, have magic powers, have a similar vibe to vampires with "consecrated ground" (GRRRRR) and can only be killed by titanium (!?!?!?!).  The other howling films completely ignore the mythology from part 2, which is good.  Apparently every Howling film almost totally ignores every film before it though (except maybe the Howling V).  It's pretty lame.

The montage over the ending credits is hilarious, seeing as it shows Sybil Danning ripping her top off like 30 times.  Also, the one bit of the theme song that goes "Ow ow ow ow ow" is, I think, unintentionally hilarious.  Watched it with a friend, and it made for great riffing material.  As a bad movie to watch with friends, I'd give it a 7 or possibly 8/10.  As a serious film for people who love werewolves as I do, a 3/10.  At least we get Sybil Danning topless.

Had a good Halloween.  I saw most of The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, but I missed too much to give it a rating.  I also watched the season premiere of Walking Dead.  I thought it was solid, but not quite great or anything.

I also watched Trick R Treat.  Second viewing, and I hadn't seen it in quite a while.  It stands up very well to repeat viewings..  I think this is going to be the Halloween equivalent of A Christmas Story, a film I watch around every Halloween.  Really enjoy it.  Rating is now bumped up to a 9/10.

Shapeshifter (2005) - A monster is loose in a jail, and chases the inmates and a guard around for the duration of the movie.  This is an old favorite of mine, the characters are very colorful and entertaining.  It actually has somewhat of a plot as one of the inmates has a connection to the monster, and the revelations during the movie are somewhat interesting.  Jennifer Lee Wiggins spends the whole movie in a tight tank top, which is definitely the highlight for me  :teddyr:  There's plenty of gore, some good cheesiness, overall I had fun.  4.5/5.

04 Love Object (2003) + High Tension (2003)
05 House (1986) + Witchboard (1986)

My thanks to Jack and Jim H and those who took the time to post their October/Halloween viewings.
It seems like watching horror movies in October is a possible non-tradition with folks at badmovies.org, with only a few exceptions, but at least this thread did better than last year

Some great Halloween movies in this thread.

I finally got my Abbott & Costello Meet Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde (1953) so I watched that last night.
Boris Karloff was such a great actor. I need to find more movies with him. (any suggestions?)

Overall list:

Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde (1920)
I Spit on Your Grave
I Sell the Dead
Friday the 13th 1-9
Subspecies
Monsturd
Deranged
Tombs of the Blind Dead
Carnival of Souls
The Changeling Exorcist III
Baby Blood
Mutant (Wings Hauser one)
The Gorgon
The Undertaker and His Pals
Far Cry
The Manster
Superstition
Night of the Demons
The Body Snatcher
I Walked With a Zombie
Return of the Vampire
Howling 3
Legend of Hell House
Addams Family
House on Sorority Row
Howling 2
Trick R Treat

Total films viewed: 35.  I did see some horror TV stuff as well - an episode of the Outer Limits, several Dexter episodes, and The Walking Dead.  I usually watch a good number of horror films in October, but I've decided from now on my new October tradition is at least one horror film for every day in October.

Hmm..  The Black Cat, The Body Snatcher, Targets, The Man They Could Not Hang, and The Raven spring to mind.  My personal favorite performance of his is probably the Body Snatcher - certainly not the best film he's in, but MAN is he great in it.  Such a complete and total ***hole it's incredible.

My reaction was pretty much: very iconic design, a few really great ideas and some great looking shots and sequences (especially for the time, the scene where the monster comes to life is an editing and sound design marvel), but as a film it's just good, not great.

I've only seen one horror film this far (Touch of Satan via MST3k, which was HORRIBLE),  I need to play catchup to get to at least 31 films viewed.  First on my list is the Ninth Configuration, but I also hope to see Jigoku, Of Unknown Origin, Chronos, Village of the Damned, and a number of others.

Trick Or Treat

This one's on my list to watch as well.

I also have recently purchased "Halloween H20" and "From Dusk Til Dawn" but haven't watched either one yet (I've seen both films numerous times before already, though)... will have to make time for them too!

Here's what I've watched so far.

10/1-The Hills Have Eyes (original)
10/2-John Carpenter's Vampires
10/3-The Legend of  Hell House/ Mark of The Vampire
10/4-Son of Frankenstein/ Blood From a Mummy's Tomb

Tonight I am watching John Carpenter's picks on TCM:
The Thing From Another World
It! Terror From Beyond Space
The Curse of Frankenstein

I'd like to catch up on as many horror flicks as I can before Halloween.

Tonight I watched something called BOGGY CREEK: THE LEGEND IS REAL.

It was a Midnight Releasing film, but it was a cut above the cheap crap that studio was putting out for the last couple of years.  There was a decent plot, actors I came to like (especially the main girl), and monster costumes that were neither CGI nor incredibly cheap.  Throw in some pretty amazing gore effects and a smidge of nudity, and the overall effect was a fairly watchable creature feature.

However, they should have called it HUMANOIDS FROM THE SWAMP.  When you see it and get the monster's motivation, you will understand why! LOL

Last night I watched "HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES".
I havent seen it in years, and up until last night, I remember it as just being "ok". But upon last nights veiwing, I found a whole new love for it.

Night before THAT, was the original "Little Shop of Horrors".

It was AWESOME. WAY better than the 80's remake. Not to say that the remake is without it's charm.

Tonight I watched CAESAR AND OTTO'S SUMMER CAMP MASSACRE from Brain Damage Films.

It was a truly atrocious, micro-budget horror comedy attempt that pretty much failed on both counts.  A few laugh worthy moments, but not enough to justify the $2 rental.

I'll try again tomorrow night.

OK, right now I'm watching "Stake Land" and I'm thinking, why the hell does every vampire slayer in modern vampire movies have to be some hardend badass. It seems like it takes away the real sense of terror one might feel when a facing a vampire. I miss the old movies where people were realistic and were frightend of the monsters. Now every movie, we have some hero that acts like an A-hole and says something clever when he or she kills the monsters. This was a good thing the first few times it was done, but now it's annoying. Hollywood is out of ideas.

Over the past 2 days I have watched Massacre At Central High, Demon Seed and Nightmare In The Damaged Brain......

Back in.....August I think.....A nearby theatre showed NIGHTMARE as a midnight screening. It was apparently the movies 20th aniversery. I dug it. Not the best movie ever, but I dug it.

So far for ME, it has been as follows:

10/1/11- Frankenstein (1932)
10/2/11- The Mummy (1933)
10/3/11- Evil Ed (1996)
10/4/11- Little Shop of Horrors (1960)
10/5/11- House of 1,000 Corpses (2002)
11/6/11- Dream House (2011).....which didn't end up being a horror movie like the trailer makes it out to be, but I let it slide cuz it had some creepy moments.

and TONIGHT (10/7/11) I'm seeing the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre at the same theatre I saw Nighmare.

Recently watched:

1408 (2007) starring John Cusack as a disillusioned writer/skeptic who ends up finding himself trapped inside an Hellish evil haunted hotel room? Can he find a means of escape? This had some good moments but I felt it dragged too much in spots and I also found it hard to care at times about what would happen to Cusack's character. Probably would have worked better as an hour long anthology show episode. Samuel L. Jackson is here as well in little more than a bit role.

Hell Night (1981) starring Linda Blair as part of a group of young pledges who are forced to spend the night in a reportedly haunted manor as part of their hazing initiation. This one surprised me by being very suspenseful and gripping and it did make you care for its characters and rather quickly at that. It's nothing really new and some may be disappointed with the lack of nudity but it's really a fun horror film to watch on a boring night with some good scares which will likely make you jump.

The Others (2001): starring Nicole Kidman as a mother desperately trying to protect her children, who are allergic and photsensitive to light, from what may very well be ghostly intruders? But how do you stop what you can't see? This suspense thriller with elements of horror was very well done gradually building its story, getting us to care about the characters and ultimately revealing some surprising mysteries.

Also watched 4 episodes of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" which appeared on Doctor Madblood, an Horror host from Virginia, 's show - these included "Mother May I Go Out To Swim?" featuring William Shatner as a man with a little too disturbing a closeness to his mother, "The Crystal Trench" about a woman (Patricia Owens) obsessed with finding her husband's body at the expense of her current happiness, "Victim Four" about a pair of men who try and find the woman they love and protect her from being the next victim of a serial killer nicknamed the Butcher and finally "Craig's Will" starring Dick Van Dyke and Stella Stevens as a couple who plot the demise of the family dog when it gets the fortune they expected Van Dyke's character to recieve that ultimately proves much harder than anticipated taking some turns towards unexpected fun and weirdness. Watching this felt rather like watching an anthology film with Madblood as host, it was quite fun and the stories were all entertaining with some unexpected twists and turns, which you expect from a show with Hitchcock's name, and some great actors involved.

Be very careful. Watching too many Fred Olen Ray movies is very, very, very bad for your health. I should know, seeing I own half of his output and they're all pretty damn dismal barring "Cyclone". Star Slammer is extremely boring for a "women in-a-space-prison" movie, although I found the busty warden chick strangely hot....

Just finished Lady Frankenstein.  The cut version, since I have it in a Mill Creek.  Don't know what's missing, but it wasn't violence/nudity, as it still had plenty of that.  This was actually fairly good for the most part - some good performances, good sets, and an interesting variation on the Frankenstein mythos.  In particular, Rosalba Neri was really good as the title character - in control in every scene, she carries the film.

But still, much of the film is lackluster, particular the scenes with the monster running around killing people.  Just not that interesting, and the later explanation that the monster is getting revenge makes absolutely no sense as the monster has no way of knowing who made it.

Still, worth a watch.

6/10.

Today:

Case 39 - a social worker named Emily rescues a child named Lilly from her parents literally moments before they kill her.  Emily then decides to foster Lilly until a permanent home can be found.  However, it rapidly becomes apparent that Lilly might be more than she seems.  Is Lilly a monster, or is Emily just coming emotionally unglued due to her stressful life and her own past demons?  Here's a hint: "Lilly" is short for "Lilith".

This is one of those movies that starts off extremely well and then comes apart about halfway through.  The question of Lilly's supposed diabolical nature is answered far too soon, leaving the movie with too much time to spin its wheels before the climax.  The manifestations of Lilly's evil are also pretty silly.  At least somebody had enough restraint to only include one shot where Lilly's long, black hair obscures half of her face while her visible eye bugs out eerily.  (Yes, movie makers, it was scary in The Ring but that was TEN FREAKIN' YEARS AGO!)  On the plus side, the acting is very good all-around and Lilly's full-out demon form, when you finally get to see it, is actually kind of scary in its simplicity and directness.

Kudos to whoever recommended ATTACK THE BLOCK!!!
I just finished it, and I must say it is one of the best alien invasion movies I've seen in a long time.  I loved the slouching, impenetrably black alien beasts with their glowing blue teeth!  Even the characters, whom I was fully prepared to despise at the beginning of the film, wound up being sympathetic, believable, and REAL!
This is an OUTSTANDING film with lots of great moments!

I was very confused by "Cabin Fever" but I still enjoyed it. It didn't seen to follow much of anything from the first one (except for the deputy with the pube-stache). But it had a lot of boobs and gore, and it never got boring. Story-wise it's a terrible movie, but it was so bad it was good. Since I like bad movies anyway it was a win win.

Let's see....

Lady Frankenstein - good lead performance, just an OK movie though.
The Devil Bat - Eh, it was alright.  Not as bad as I had heard, but nothing special either.
Most Dangerous Game - pretty fun adventure flick.  Solid stuff.
MST3k Devil Fish - pretty good episode, though the film is boring.
Star Slammer - AWFUL film.  Just awful.
MST3K Touch of Satan - Also awful, the riffing is just OK on this one.
Jigoku - Interesting film, pretty impressively gory for its age.  Feels stretched out though.
Son of Frankenstein - A lot of fun, but feels a little long.
Ghost of Frankenstein - Worth a watch.  A little uneven.
The Ninth Configuration - Not really a horror film, more of a mystery.  Excellent acting, but didn't really add up for me.

My goal is to watch a horror film for every night in October, but I don't think I'm gonna make it this year.  Oh well.

Thought this deserved a bump, first day of October in 2012!

I watched Brain Dead.  This is the 2007 movie, not the alternate title for Dead-Alive or the other film from around 2001.  It's directed by Kevin Tenney, who some may know from the first two Witchboard movies and Night of the Demons.  It's not up to those 80s classics, but I found this one entertaining.  It's a very light, but still occasionally quite gory, sci-fi zombie film.  Think Night of the Creeps in a cabin in the woods, only not that good.  I found the ***hole witty character genuinely pretty funny, and the criminal guy was pretty good.  Also, three women are topless in the first 5 minutes - no joke.  Only one of the five female cast members doesn't get naked.  VERY low budget, obviously shot in HD without any attempt at dynamic lighting and color correction.

Anyway, it was on Netflix instant, and I give it a thumbs up.  Pretty funny, gory, well-paced and about 90 minutes.  My only major complaint is I didn't particularly care for the ending/wraparound story thing.  7/10.

My goal is to watch 31 horror films, hopefully at least one a day in October!

Today I watched Deadheads.  Directed by two brothers who are the children of a guy who did special effects on Evil Dead, interestingly.  Has some footage and a couple of visual references to the Evil Dead films, actually.  Decent entertaining film, it's a sort of zombie-buddy-romance hybrid.  Moderate on gore, but what's there is well-executed.  Ending is a little weak, some overacting.

6/10.
