I grew up in the days when you could give your kids a sip of beer (or spank them or yell at them) without going to prison. I'm sure I had sips of beer when I was 6 or 7 years old. And it was not unusual for a parent (especially in an Italian family like mine) to rub whiskey or wine on a baby's gums when they were teething. This probably sounds pretty barbaric to some people, but it made me who I am today (a weirdo).

Post by: schmendrik on September 22, 2009, 09:23:10 AM My parents didn't drink, but we had some cousins who were jazz musicians and a little bit of partiers (in retrospect they were pretty sober themselves, but compared to my parents they were wild). They had their own portable bar, which fascinated me. I remember watching my cousin make himself a Manhattan and he gave me a sip. I thought it tasted like poison.
Got the taste for beer at about 15. I hung out with an older crowd, and the drinking age in New York was 18, so I was exposed to pitchers of beer at a young age. I learned to like that undrinkable "beer" that comes out of kegs at college parties. Not to the point of drunkenness, but I'd have a couple of cups. I can't drink that stuff anymore. He liked it; I thought I was going to puke. I still can't stand the taste (or even the smell) of any alcoholic beverage. If there is even a hint of alcohol, it tastes horrible to me. Needless to say, I don't drink and never get invited to parties. :bluesad:

I'd gulp it from the can and then let out a huge belch. That always made me laugh. There were several times when I started to swig too much and my grandpa would say, "Hey hey! That's enough!" I like the taste of beer and tequila, and a couple of Irish whiskeys, but not much else. Some wine is ok once in a while, but not most.
My first real drinking experience involved a large quantity of Seagrams 7 and resulted in me doing a very good impression of a lawn sprinkler all over my bedroom. I was 15 or so at the time. Hated it, tasted like soap. Later, I found out this was because it was Pabst Blue Ribbon.
First alcohol I remember liking the taste of was Amaretto---it tasted like candy! I would very occasionally sneak some from my parents liquor cabinet when I was 12-13. First drunk-at Thanksgiving at my Gramma and Granpa Bonarski's. They give my some home made wine. I had 3 shots. I got wasted. The rest is (a sometimes sad,sometimes fun) history. But I have no illusios. Booze is the cause of most of my problems in life. I have been arrested over 20 times....(mostly minor stuff)-BUT-I was never sober when those occured. I don't use alchohol...I abuse it.

He gave me a sip, I imagine it was probably Pabst Blue Ribbon. I didn't really think it tasted too bad then, but years later when I started hanging out with guys who drank, it was all I could do to finish a whole can of that awful tasting stuff. But I persevered, I overcame. It's the American way :teddyr:

However, I have always wanted to get one of those giant nebuchadnezzar sized wine bottles and carry it out at a party and offer wine to people and awkwardly try to pour it into tiny glasses. The next day, I drank a big glass of Jim Beam and ended up puking drunk all over my friends house.
Since then I have been every level of drunk at one time or another, as well as skirting the edge of what RCMerchant is talking about. I've had fun nights, and other nights where I've woken up the next day to have to apologize for coating a friend's cars in vomit. Alcohol, in and of itself, is nothing to be frightened of, but like any other vice it can sneak up on you. I fully understand where RC is coming from. Hard to explain unless you've been there yourself. My solution is to keep myself so busy I don't have the option to drink, and I keep myself very busy.
