Title: Letterman reveals affairs with staff, extortion attempt

Well, I've always viewed Letterman as being a stand up guy. And at least he got this information out there himself in his own way so that him and his family can hopefully get past this. Must've been a really difficult decision for him  to come clean with this on the air.

Sounds like the extortionist picked the wrong guy lol.  Gotta admire ol' Dave.  Want two million bucks?  How about a few years in jail instead?

Lets count down the top 10 reasons why not to extort money from Dave...

The only thing he is sorry for is getting caught.

This guy is slimy. :hatred:

I'm assuming he's married. He could've paid some guy to keep quiet and explained to his wife why two million is missing in private. Or he could keep the money and tell the world. I'm guessing it would get great ratings !

Oh he's married all right.

Sometimes it seems as though the bigger sin is in being caught, rather than the deed itself.  I am afraid I don't quite 'get' that mentality.

  Good one Torgo.

I agree. Letterman and the extortionist are both slimeballs. I don't care for Letterman.

You're right, the extorionist is slime too. I'm not excusing his behavior.

I already thought Letterman was a bit of snake. I'll admit he's got balls fessing on air and getting the guy banged up, but seriously who the hell would wanna have sex with him? I'm sure it's only stupid show assistants that were trying to further their own careers. But this is a man who makes his living "talking" to people. Hell, I do that everyday (being a human being), it's just there isn't a film crew present when I do.

And if you can do it, anybody can!

It's pretty damn difficult to be consistently entertaining and popular on a talk show like the two he's been on, especially for 25+ years like Letterman has.  It combines elements of showmanship, stand up comedy (Letterman, of course, is one of the head writers as well as the solo performer), directing, producing, interviewing technique, and a lot of other skills.

Not commenting on his personal life...  Just saying, I have to give credit where credit is due.

I mean, putting this whole thing aside, is it just me or has Letterman just seemed to have become more mean spirited and nasty over the years?  Granted, I'm not a regular watcher of his work, so maybe it's always been like that, but it just seems like more and more with certain stunts he's pulled and various bits from several news shows, he just seems like he's been in a quick slide to prickdom.

Blackmail/Extortion is lucrative enough, no need to make it more so.

Actually, interesting you guys mention that because I just read an article in USA Today and some people recommend NOT going to the police when you're being blackmailed.  There's some situations that it's better to either pay the person and let the matter go away OR hire a private detective or two to track down who's blackmailing you and let them now how serious a crime that is (and what they could be punished for in the legal system.)

Oftentimes many people who are doing the blackmail don't seem to realize how serious a crime it's consider and what kind of punishment they can face should the matter get turned over to the police.  Faced with this knowledge, they'll give up whatever "material" they have and just quietly disappear.

Either way, I just hope I'm never in a situation where I have to deal with something like that.   :buggedout:

I think that mentality is why kidnapping and blackmail has become so common. I don't think it's any secret how much trouble is to be had if one is caught, , but if the idea is to just pay it and go on their way, then there's NO trouble. I can't imagine anyone paying someone off and NOT expecting the same people to go ahead and do it all again.

I can see hiring a private detective to track them down if you were in some compromising position, but I think the key is to not be in one in the first place. If what they have is fabricated, I can't see why anyone would not want to take it head-on.
