Here's relatively dull but typical scene from Wanda

This was the sole directorial effort of Barbara Loden, wife of Elia Kazan and I was all set to dismiss it as a vanity project but it's actually really good. Loden is also the star and she does an excellent job portraying the title character, a pretty blonde divorcee who has some really bad luck, which her apparent alcoholism doesn't seem to be helping. This movie sets a record for little 10oz glasses of beer drunk in dives. There is a place in CHinatown here in Boston that still sells beer like that, with the little glass. So it's depressing. One amazing shot, she is driving in a car with last nights one night stand and you see a Dairy Queen on the horizon "no"  you're thinking"  "please don't kick her out of the car and leave her at the dairy queen. no no no"  does he?

Well at any rate she eventually hooks up with a small time crook.  She has this thing she does, she asks the guy something and he's obviously not interested and she goes "huh?". It's like the entire history of why men can't stand women since the dawn of time rolled into that one utterence "huh?".  You're like "Yes, no, I don't know, STOP BOTHERING ME!!"

The film quality itself is cheap looking but what are you gonna do. It's kind of an art house take on hick sploitation.  There is no music and it's all very "real time" ey but I really liked it. 4/5
