Title: Fritz the Cat (1972)
Post by: SPazzo on October 12, 2009, 06:27:49 PM
Just watched this, and I have to say it's the funniest cartoon ever!  It was the first X-rated cartoon ever made.  I'm sure most of you have seen it so I'll skip the plot summery, and I couldn't find a clip/trailer that was SFW.

7/10

Anyone ever watched it?

This is one that I haven't seen since sometime in the 80s, the only scene I really remember was when the cops/pigs were banging on the door. I'll have to watch it again. I think that I saw The 9 Lives of Fritz the Cat once too. R. Crumb hated Bakshi's film so much that he killed the character off  :buggedout:

"They've killed Fritz!" "They've killed Fritz!"

The man responsible for this film was also responsible for "Wizards," which is reviewed at this website.  Which leads me to wonder if there is some connection with the name Fritz in both "Fritz the Cat" and "Wizards."

Looking at everything that Ralph Bakshi has done, both in films and for TV, he's one of the most underrated filmmakers out there, especially for his TV work, which would include "Mighty Heroes" with such heroes as Cuckoo Man, Diaper Man, Rope Man, etc.

I frigging love Bakshi, though I've only seen Coonskin and Hey Good Lookin', I'm eager to see other things he's done.

For a long time Ralph Bakshi was my favorite animator, I even got to meet the guy at a convention back in 1986 when I was 13. Over three nights they played Wizards, Lord Of The Rings, and Fire and Ice in a theater there which was awesome. I am a huge Wizards fan, I remember saving up $80 for when it was first released on VHS in 1987 back when video tapes cost an arm and a leg.

His earlier films are obviously more controversial in nature, and I like those too Fritz the Cat, Heavy Traffic, Coonskin, but his fantasy films are my favorites. Fire and Ice while it has a pretty straightforward story has some of the best barbarian action in any film live action or animated. The Peter Jackson LOTR owes a huge debt to Bakshi's version flaws and all.

I saw FRITZ THE CAT on a VHS tape . . . must have been about 25 years ago . . . but I don't remember much about it.

I can't recommend it enough to any and all animation fans.

It might seem revolting, or outright stupid, but it is also a time machine. Watching it is almost an act of archeology.

Hmmmmm...were we partaking of anything substance that might cause memory loss at the time?   :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:

That's pretty much exactly my experience with the movie. I do remember that I'd heard a lot of good things about it, finally borrowed a tape somebody had made of his parents' ginormous satellite dish, and really found it kind of disappointing. Maybe I'd appreciate it more as a window on its time if I saw it today.

American Pop is enough to turn anyone off to animation altogether. I have yet to see anything Bakshi has made that I remotely liked. Have never seen Fritz though, so maybe that one is okay, but I'm definately gunshy to watch it.
