Title: Computer/Router Question
Post by: Ash on October 20, 2009, 01:47:54 PM
I've got a computer and router question one of you may be able to answer.

The problem I'm having is that I cannot be online on my Xbox and my computer at the same time.

My computer is right next to my TV and a single RCA cable modem sits atop my computer desk.
The computer is hooked up directly to the modem via USB cable.
The Xbox 360 hooks to directly the back of the modem via ethernet cable.
Both cables cannot be plugged into the back of the modem at the same time.

When I want to use my Xbox, I unplug the USB from the back of the modem and then take the ethernet cable running out of the back of the Xbox and plug it into the back of the modem.  Then I have to press the reset button on the modem for it to recognize that the Xbox is connected.

When I'm done playing online on the Xbox, I unplug the ethernet cable from the back of the modem and then plug the USB back in and reset the modem again so I can use the computer.

Normally I wouldn't use USB, but for my computer, I have to.  There's something wrong with my NIC card and no amount of troubleshooting (including installing two brand new NIC cards) has been able to fix it.  So, I'm forced to use USB from my modem to my computer.

I need a way to be able to use both at the same time.

The problem I'm running into is that most of the routers available are ethernet only.  They do not have USB jacks on the back of them.  Yes, there is a kit you can buy that contains adapters, but it's $30+ and I don't want to spend that much if I don't have to.

I'd like to be able to be on my computer and stream movies through my Xbox 360 via Netflix, but can't with my current setup.  It's either one or the other...not at the same time.

Any suggestions?
