Title: South African DVD classics
Post by: Trevor on November 23, 2009, 08:03:54 AM
One of my big projects as a [cough] [cough] professional film archivist over the last year is to write liner notes, credits and synopses for many South African films, most of which have never even been on VHS before, let alone DVD. I consider it a honour to do this ~ some of the titles are:

Katrina 1969
Jannie Totsiens 1970 (Johnny Farewell)
Die Kandidaat 1968 (The Candidate)
Wild Season 1967
Dr Kalie 1967
Lord Oom Piet 1962
The Winners 1972

.........and more to come, all available at www.kalahari.net (http://www.kalahari.net)

I only have a few complaints ~ these are all bare-bones DVDs with no extra features, 'making ofs' etc all of which can be found at the NFA. I would have been pleased to record audio commentaries for them, but I guess expense for the transfers was the problem for the rights holders.

Still, I suppose I should be grateful that these films are now available for everyone to buy and that makes me feel good when I walk into a shop and see them there.
