Title: Do You Watch Anime?
Post by: InformationGeek on December 12, 2009, 10:50:08 PM
I should have ask this a long time ago considering how I'm into anime.  Do any of you watch anime TV shows?  Stuff like Naruto, Shin-Chan, Bleach, Pokemon, and Yu-Yu Hakusho or shows that are available only DVD?  I watch lots of this stuff and I have a decent collection of it as well.  My latest edition to it has been the 2 Disc Special Editions of Planetes Vol. 1 & 2 and Trigun Vol. 1.

So, do you guys watch any anime?  Here's one that the b-movie lovers here might enjoy!
Project Blue Earth SOS!  It features elements from Sci-Fi movies, like Body Snatchers; War of the Worlds; Independence Day; etc.

I occasionally watch it.  I'm in the middle of World's Greatest Disciple Kenichi, though it's been a month or so since I watched any of it.

I used to watch it a little more regularly, but I find it very hard to find anime I like enough to really get into.  Most anime I find take about twice as long to tell the story as they should.  In the case of One Piece, which I watched for about 120 episodes, it was more like four times as long.  Obviously, I still enjoyed it, as I watched 120 odd episodes of it, but it just takes FOREVER for some stuff.  Same deal with Naruto, though if you ignore the filler arcs it's not nearly as bad as One Piece.

The basic thing I've found is I should probably only watch series that are a single season long or semi-episodic, and always intended to be that.  Ones I've enjoyed along those lines are Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Trigun, Dragon Half, Black Lagoon, and Hyper Police.

I watch a little bit of Anime.  Cowboy Bebop was probably my favorite.  Also got a kick out of Tank Police.  That stuff isn't a huge favorite of mine, but I enjoy it occasionally.

This is usually because the anime is being created while the manga it spun off of is still being put out. Often they have a ton of filler episodes while waiting for the next issue to be released, so they can animate it. I agree, its easier just to watch self-contained series without all the filler bs.

You got the When They Cry?!  You are the most awesome mom ever (Next to mine of course )!  That's some pretty dark stuff you are dealing with.  I'm currently reading the manga verison of it and it's just as dark.  I have the box set on my Christmas list.  If I don't get it then, I'll use the Christmas money I get to pay for it.  How's the voice acting for the show as it goes on?  I'm seen some of the early episodes and it's sort of hit or miss a couple of times until it really starts getting creepy.

I watch anime every once in a while.  Not so much series, but movies.  The Studio Ghibli stuff is amazing, but after that I don't get very far.  I do read the manga One Piece though.

The voice acting is rough in the beginning but does improve.   I hope you get it for christmas so you dont have to buy it. It was worth the price though.

I don't watch much anime.. but I do read a decent amount of manga. My friends are all into it though, and they even managed to get me onto the staff at a convention.  I do nothing anime related, I run Magic tournaments, but still, I'm surrounded by the stuff.

Thing is, even when they're covering a finished manga or an arc that is done, they just take way too long for the amount of storyline.  Not always, mind you, but frequently it's quite obvious that they're stretching out scenes and filling them with padding to get to X number of episodes, rather than adapting the manga the way it should be.

For example, one series I really liked a lot, Yu Yu Hakusho, has a few fights that just drag on for like 5 episodes, when the actual number of scenes should really have it at more like 2.  There are also some shows where a small amount of storyline is dragged out ridiculously.  Like the Sand arc in One Piece, which is like 40 episodes or something.  For the amount of things that happened, it could easily have been covered in 15.

Love Cowboy Bebop so much I bought it.  I've also seen all of Full Metal Alchemist. When my daughter was in Japan back in 2005 she brought me some collectors cards.

I find the DVDs hard to purchase, even of things I like, as they're so ludicrously priced.  Crazy part is they're WAAAAAY cheaper than they used to be (LaserDisc releases used to be like $80 and have two episodes), and they're STILL huge ripoffs.

Because of this, the only DVD versions I own are a couple Hong Kong releases (even if they're legitimate non-pirated Hong Kong releases, they'll be way cheaper and have english subs) and a couple movies I bought used.

The shows are often very overpriced.  I recommend looking for used DVDS or checking out Best Buy's collection.  Those are often cheapest used or new.

Its because everything in Japan is so damned expensive. There, you get a DVD with one or two episodes that costs more than what you pay here for four. Also, they pay a television tax, so even the anime they watch on tv isnt really free. Not that our situation is any great deal, either. However, I have noticed a trend, instead of releasing four at a time, some companies have been releasing box sets in two parts for around thirty each, as opposed to $15-20 for a set of four or $60 and up for complete series box sets. At best buy, they will often bring the 2 part sets down to $20 (13 episodes as opposed to 4). Both sgt frog and shin chan were released this way.

No, because I could never cotton to that style of animation. But there is one exception to that, and that'd be "Star Blazers" or "Space Cruiser Yamato," as it was known in Japan.

What impressed me about the series, was not so much the animation, but the characters, especially the villains. After years of watching mostly simplistic villains in American cartoon shows, I was suitablely impressed by how complex and complicated, at least I thought so, were the villains in "Star Blazers."

Whether it is for that reason or someother reason, "Star Blazers" continues to be one of my favorite cartoon series of all time.

Every so often I get an urge to watch some anime. I tend to somehow find some that no one else has heard of (or at least ever mentioned), such as Tree of Palme (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0311618/) (Parumu no Ki) or Tekkonkinkreet (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0831888/). Both look a bit different than most anime that I have seen, and both tell engaging, thought-provoking stories. Plus they were cheap (Tekkonkinkreet was $3 at Big Lots). I did also enjoy Howl's Moving Castle, a movie that is more widely known.

I just don't care for the shows that are basically the same every episode, like Dragonball Z ("We must get more balls!" "But where?" "There! Let's fight for them!" "We win! But we must get more balls next time!" -- Not my cup of tea) or any of the shows based on card games. The Japanese have done some wonderful animated pieces; they've also done some absolute crap. So I tend to be very picky about which anime I watch.

I've watched it before.  I've only seen 10 episodes though.  It's prtty good, not the best anime.  I've give that to Monster.  Blood+ has a good sense of art style and has an amazing soundtrack.  I do agree though, this ain't little kids!  Espeically the opening scene!

If you like that show, you should see Gunslinger Girl or Elfen Lied.

Small piece of advice: once you get past the Sensui arc, you can pretty safely ignore the rest.  It's pretty bad.  Even the Sensui arc is a little weak.

Also, whatever you do, don't ever listen to the English dub...  It's atrocious, especially Kuwabara's voice.

I've seen Anime stuff over the years.  My first introduction, I suppose if it counts, was Pokemon and Sailor Moon.  But I never was a fan, really.  A buddy of mine is huge into it, stuff like Dragon Ball Z and a lot of anime movies.

Always seemed a bit 'nerdy' to me.  Not knocking it, as I did like this one movie I saw, but I've always considered myself a 'fringe nerd.'  In the sense that if I'm at say, a comics convention, I'm not necessarily out of place, but I"m not so excessively nerdy as to ask a writer or artist something like, "What was (insert character) thinking on page 34 of issue 29?  And why was he thinking that?"  I'm more into 'regular' cartoons, so to speak.

But, I did like this one movie I saw on Syfy a whiles back.  Wouldn't be bothered now to track it down, but it was better than I thought it'd have been.

Too late for that.  I've been watcing the show in English dub.  I've heard worse before and personally, I like it.  I do agree that Kuwabara's voice is pretty bad (Not as bad as Hiruma's voice in Eyeshield 21.)

Honestly, aside from one or two characters, the English dub isn't so bad.  I think I was exaggerating with atrocious.  Yusuke, Hiei and Kurama all have competent voices.  But Kuwabara, who was my favorite character, has such an incredibly awful voice (it's probably the least fitting voice I've ever heard in anime, aside from Moro's voice in the Japanese version of Princess Mononoke) it makes the episodes unbearable for me.  In general, I rarely like English dubs myself, as even when the actors are good they usually are not appropriate for the characters (Cowboy Bebop is one example - pretty good voice actors, poor matching of characters).  They also talk in a way unlike how anyone speaks in real life, it's like a phone voice for many of the English anime dubs.  Getting a bit off-topic there...

I also have to say, their translations of the fighting terms are also sometimes ludicrous in the English version.

"SWORD!  GET LONGER!"

Other than the Studio Ghibli stuff I haven't been keeping up with much anime. I just got bored with a lot of the series in the mid 90's when a lot of it got to be too much of a self parody, without the innovation. I grew up with Starblazers, Battle of the Planets, Voltron, Tranzor-Z, Robotech all the series we lovingly called Japanimation back then. While the animation might look crude now in some of these, they had great stories that just were not being told in domestic American animation. I got to see Akira during its theatrical release in 1988 which is still a high point for me theater wise. I talk to some fans today who are hard-core anime freaks, and they have never seen Akira, heard of it, but not seen it  It boggles my mind.

Some of my favorites:

The Castle of Cagliostro - simply one of the best films ever made period. Does anyone else remember the laser disc arcade game called Cliff Jumper they made out of this that was like Dragon's Lair and Space Ace??
Appleseed
Black Magic M-66
Wicked City
Record Of Lodoss War - 1st series
Giant Robo
Ninja Scroll
Vampire Hunter D
The Five Star Stories
Fist of the North Star - the cult is growing  :teddyr:
The Venus Wars
BAOH
Demon City Shinjuko
Lensman - I add this one hesitantly, but I do like some of the bad guy designs, and the then innovative use of CGI mixed with hand drawn cels. Doc Smith would most likely not have approved.

I am sure there are many I enjoyed that I have forgotten over the years.

Worst anime I have ever seen? Hands down Tekken. Half the cast of the game were relegated to a 1 minute cameo if that  :hatred:

I recently bought a lot of anime with my Christmas money.  I got a good deal:

When They Cry Complete Box Set (Actually I got it for Christmas, but still)
Baccano! Complete Series
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 4
Midori Days Complete Series
One Piece Season 1: Third Voyage
009-1 Complete Collection

It was a good haul and I have to admit, Baccano! was the best.  It was an interesting take on 1920s New York with rival Mafia rivals battling each other.

I have a few gift cards, so I may be getting some new anime soon (probably sgt frog season 1 pt 2). Otherwise, I've been watching Hikaru no Go, which, given that its basically about a kid learning how to play the japanese board game Go (more or less the equivalent of chess, at least in terms of its intensity) is surprisingly entertaining. Its on Hulu, subtitled only, although it appears they did release a dub.
