Title: Who's your favourite b-movie special fx person?
Post by: diamondwaspvenom on December 18, 2009, 08:19:10 PM
Well, we've talked about favourite b-movie actors, actresses and directors. But what about the masters behind some of our favourite monsters?

In my opinion, John Carl Buechler is one of, if not, the best creature effects artist. Why?
Well, even though most of his stuff are handpuppets or costumes, they have a lot of detail put into them and it gives them this sort of creepy vibe.

What about you guys? What are some of your favourite creature effects artists?

Ray Harryhausen at the top
followed by Stan Winston and Willis O'Brein tied for second.

O'Brein was the better stop motion animator, but his portfolio is rather limited.  Harryhausen spanned both fantasy and sci-fi.  Stan Winston worked on Jurrassic Park-so that gets him a lot of points.  He set the standard for modern spfx artists.

Cool thread idea.

Gotta be Ray Harryhausen for me too. I agree with your other picks too WingedSerpent, those are the names I think of first. I'll throw a nod out to kaiju suitmation FX master Eiji Tsuburaya too.

My favorite FX artist has always been Rob Bottin.  I also have a lot of love for Rick Baker, as well.

Harryhausen for sure, while some might consider Clash of the Titans his last gasp it was a thrilling movie going experience for my young mind. Stan Winston reigned supreme over the modern era when a reliance on heavy CGI became a crutch for many artists.

A special nod of course has to be made to Lon Chaney Sr. the Man of A Thousand Faces who helped perfect the art of illusion, and Jack Pierce for his immortal Frankenstein makeup.

Harryhausen!  Also, like fortunato said, Rick Baker is pretty cool too.  Another fave would be Tom Savini.  Some of his work got me into movies.  (As well as Ebert's books)

I gotta go with tom savani. I recomend the movie he was in/did fx. "maniac". this gem of a moviewas made in 1981 and starred joe spinell. Tom savini is in a scene with a girl in the front seat of a car. Spinell jumps onto the hood (all of this is slow motion) with a 12 gauge sawed off double barrel shotgun and shoots off both barells. Savini's head spreads out to the four points of the compass. Very gory, very good.Also. don't forget he made "night of thr living dead" remake in 1990 with george romero.A little different than the origional. but very much worth watching

Eiji Tsuburaya  for me.... The Godzilla filrms were shocking to viewers when they came out for how different the monsters moved compared to the Stop-Motion stuff.
