Title: Best type of Metal?
Post by: diamondwaspvenom on December 30, 2009, 06:34:53 PM
Like the poll asks, what's your favourite type of Metal? I definitely pick plain old heavy metal, thrash, death, doom and glam. You?

You put gothic metal on the list twice. :teddyr:

I have to think a li'l bit before I choose the 5.

I put in for Groove Metal.  If I can headbang and/or dance to it that makes for perfect music to me.

Coming in a close second is Glam/Hair Metal.  I grew up in the 80s and that stuff, as long as it was done right, is comfort food to me.  The more sleazy the song the better.

I'd say for me there is a tie between Industrial and Thrash for the last spot.  I dig NIN, Fear Factory and Prong but of course I can't ignore how much I enjoy stuff like Testament, Sepultura, Slayer, Antrhax etc.

Plain old Heavy Metal, with Hair Metal a close second.

I don't know what the rest of those are  :teddyr:

I can't answer this, because I don't like metal.

But while I have you metalhead's ears, maybe you can suggest something I might like.  What I don't like about metal, really, is the vocals.  It all seems to be either screeching or that silly "Cookie Monster" growl.  And don't get me started on the lyrics; I just can't relate to them.

But I can tolerate the metal instrumental sound, and I even like it sometimes.  I like Boris (which sounds more experimental to me), and some of King Crimson's heavy explorations (like THRAK).  I also can get into some of the heavier math-rock bands like Don Caballero, which sounds very metal-ish to me.

So, are there any metal bands that are either purely or mostly instrumental that anyone can recommend to me?

Almost picked heavy, but went with glam metal. Hair bands all the way.

I'm a wham, bam glam metal man!  :tongueout: I know it ain't the best metal genre, it comes close, but I would die for it and have many times over...

But, the best really, is good 'ol bog standard heavy metal. That's where all these other sub-standard sub-genres sprouted off from. Head banging, fist pumping, riff tastic, balls to the wall heavy metal. Stick with your Defenders Of The Faith, Denim & Leather, Holy Diver and you'll never go wrong.

Well you're looking at people like Jason Becker, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Tony McAlpine and a bit of Symphony X.

These are my favourite instrumental tracks Rev:

And of course, Overkill's cover of the Edgar Winter Group classic:

Melodic death metal, thrash, power, and progressive for me.  I guess I'm kind of a dork like that.   :tongueout:

My fiancee says the power metal I listen to sounds like theme music for Saturday morning cartoons from the 80's.

I voted for heavy, doom , sludge and grind. For heavy metal, I love the classics (Maiden, Preist, Accept), for doom I like The Obsessed, Paradise Lost, Candlemass, for sludge I like Eyehategod and Grief, and for grind I really like early Napalm Death and Agoraphobic Nosebleed. I think powerviolence should've been included - then I'd give a nod to Man Is The Bastard and Apartment 213.

I can't stand much metal, but I like some Iron Maiden, a bit of Neurosis, Mastodon's pretty good, er, maybe Tool if they can be considered metal.  I used to be into Amorphis, and I bought an Opeth album once (zzz...).  I dunno, it's an area of music I haven't really explored and I'm in no hurry to.

Folk Metal!?!

I was trying to decide between speedmetal and grindcore.  Then I couldn't resist searching for some folk metal, since it sounded intriguing and I hadn't heard of it before.  After hearing this song by Korpiklaani, I just had to give my vote to the folk metal genre.

I suppose the only nu metal band I know of is Limp Bizkit, who had a 'dj' (ahem) and tried to be a bit 'rap', but were more 'crap'. but I like the older rap/metal songs on beastie boys and the goats's first albums, and the public enemy and anthrax collabo from way back. I'd class Rage Against TheMachine as rap metal as well tbh. i think some of it's good

As for pure instrumental or mostly instrumental, I can't really reccomend, but I know a few bands that are fairly decent that aren't all 'screeching'.
Fear Factory
Nine Inch Nails
Rammstein (but, they are German, so their lyrics would be in German, but really good, and some songs have a dance type beat to it)
White Zombie- Hell, being named after a Lugosi movie gets them a thumbs up in my book.

Me personally: Heavy, Industrial, Funk, Nu, and Thrash.

I don't really listen to metal as much as I used to, but the bands that either got me into metal or sustained my interest in metal include:
Motorhead
Anthrax
Metallica
Nine Inch Nails
White Zombie/Rob Zombie
Faith No More
Korn
Disturbed
Rammstein

Nu metal is pretty much on the way out.  Most nu metal bands have either changed a bit or faded away.  With any luck, we can just act like it didn't happen.

same town, cool. yeah it's not really metal, but kind of heavy and aggressive enough to be in a way. there's a few other bands in that genre like Rodan, b***h Magnet, Dis and Pitchblend I used to listen to. not sure how easy it would be to get hold of stuff like that now, probably out of print. maybe some blogs have albums up

I went with Progressive Metal (Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Anubis Gate, Opeth, Atheist, Cynic etc.), Heavy Metal (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Anvil etc.), Thrash Metal (Slayer, Metallica, Exodus, Testament, Invocator, etc.) Power Metal (Helloween, Symphony-X, Vicious Rumors, Iced Earth), and Death Metal (Death, Carcass, Obituary, Bolt Thrower, Suffocation etc.)... I wish I'd been able to include Rap Metal (Rage Against the Machine, Clawfinger) and Doom Metal (Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell, Count Raven, Paradise Lost), too.

I wish I could've voted for speed metal also. A truly under-appreciated sub-genre that was only really decent during the 80s. So many awesome albums and phenomenal bands: Agent Steel, Liege Lord, Savage Grace, Riot, Helstar, Angel Dust and even early Warlock...

Oh and can I just say how awesome christian metal is? It's a massive guilty pleasure of mine, and even though I completely disagree with the subject matter and message - nearly all of it (80s bands) kicks ass!

Whitecross, Guardian, Stryper, Barren Cross, Bride, Seventh Force, Deliverance and Bloodgood rule!  :teddyr:

Straight up heavy metal is best in my book, before all the classifications and sub-genres. Frankly I couldn't care less about them. But yeah, basically, I'm old school straight up metal: Maiden, Priest, that kind of stuff. I like the more hardcore stuff as well, but once it starts getting into splintered classifications, I lose interest.

I like many types of metal. I started off as a total Maiden freak when I was a kid - Powerslave was the first one I got. Then I graduated to thrash, then death metal, then all the Earache stuff circa '89. I abolutely love doom, but nowadays I find myself constantly listening to Jesu - that's about as metal as I've been into lately. I'm not as big a metal fan like I used to be - I find a lot of the newer bands don't hold my interest very much.
(sorry about the double post, I forgot that I entered a reply to the thread.)

Me too. I like the metal from when it was all just "heavy metal." I might refer to glam, hair bands, etc., but that's really more about presentation than about the music itself. To me, there is metal, and all of the various subgenres are kind of pointless. It's like a lot of bands and fans trying to lay claim to the genre but distance themselves from everything in it. To me, it feels pretentious, contradictory and needlessly complicated. It's either metal or it's something else. Some of what is calling itself metal these days is so different from what I'd call metal, it probably should branch off into something else, much as metal branched off from rock and roll, becoming a genre in its own right.

Then again, is the original heavy metal distinct from the rock genre? I think it's just part of the progression of rock that had been going on through the 60s and 70s. You can find the elements of heavy metal throughout that period. When I think about it, the original metal classification almost seems like it was more about marketing than about a new kind of music. Maybe it's all just rock and roll.

I find it funny how Christian Metal and Black Metal came out of the same time, people were calling metal satanic, some to prove that it isn't made Christian Metal, others took this opportunity to make Black metal.

You got some karma comin' for that one, my friend!  The NWOBHM was a short but very sweet period of true, non-genre specific hard rock that embodied true D.I.Y. spirit and unapologetically honest originality. The music is as good today as it did then.

Raven, baby!  5 *****

A few more names: Jackal, Black Axe, Fist, Vardis, Holocaust, White Spirit, and Praying Mantis and Paralex.   NWOBHM-GOOD!
