Title: 9 (2009)
Post by: indianasmith on January 01, 2010, 09:01:16 PM
My daughter has been wanting to watch this Tim Burton epic since she saw the trailers last fall, and I must say that the movie was worth the wait.

Set in a ravaged, post-apocalyptic future, the title character, a small, animated doll, awakes in a lab type environment with a bunch of papers, a dead scientist, and a strange, circular device with odd symbols etched on it. On his back is written the number "9".

He takes to the streets and meets one of his own kind, another doll with "2" on his back. But before he can get any explanation as to his existence or what is going on, they are attacked by a giant, evil dog robot.

2 is carried off, and 9 is rescued by another doll and taken to a small community of them that live in an abandoned church.  Little by little, he understands that there has been a great war between machines and humans that left all of humanity dead and the machines slowly falling apart.  But now 9 must face the difficult decision whether or not to defy the will of "1", the leader, and go to rescue "2", who was carried off after rescuing him.

This is a beautiful film.  Remniscent of both "Wall-E" and THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, this movie may well rival UP as best animated feature of the year.  I cannot recommend this movie strongly enough!

It's a great looking film, but man, that storyline made no sense to me at all.  And that cornball ending!  It's definitely worth a rental, but I didn't think it was one of the best childrens' films of 2009: definitely behind UP, CORALINE, PONYO, and even MONSTERS VS. ALIENS.

yeah, have to agree, it fell a little short.  didn't have the heart of UP or Coraline.  still a good movie.
