Title: What was your first Horror/Sci-Fi memory?
Post by: ColonelKlink on January 07, 2010, 03:34:46 PM
For me, it was the original series V. I was only 5 when it debuted and seeing the
"lizard men" scared the hell out of me.LOL

The drive-in theater in 1977.  I saw "Damnation Alley" and "Wizards" on a double bill.  That, and watching Monster Matinee on the weekends with my sisters, getting my fill of Godzilla, Gamera, Rodan, etc. in the late '70s.

My dad telling me to watch Hellraiser at age 7, because "it's a top film where they pull people's skin off with hooks!".

Thanks dad.  :teddyr:

Most likely the Hanna-Barbera "Godzilla" and "Spiderman And His Amazing Friends" cartoons on "Saturday Superstore" in the early to mid-Eighties.

Nightmare On Elm Street is probably the first horror movie that I remember watching. NOES really gave me some bad nightmares.

As for Sci-fi, i'll probably have to say The X-Files. I still remember watching that show on FOX when I was young.

I was closer to 10 at the time but I recall those lizard faced aliens scaring the beejeezus out of me too! And I know "Salem's Lot" (the 1979 mini) scared the crap outta me too (Actually it was the flying kid vampire that frightened me silly there). My earliest Sci-Fi memories are of stuff like the 80s "Astroboy" cartoon and Disney's THE BLACK HOLE. Also recall watching Marvel Super-Heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, The Mighty Thor, The Incredible Hulk, The Sub-Mariner and of course Spider-Man.

since you say first memory, I am trying to dig, and it's hazy. I think the first bit of horror I ever saw was one of those wierd black and white brain movies. I don't know the name, but it was that one with the flying brains. I think they had tails. That really creeped me out. I think I was 5 or 6 at the time. Wow, what was that movie? I think I have a "What was the film" entry.

Probably Friday The 13th, Poltergeist or Jaws on LaserDisc.

The original Night of the Living Dead. I watched it with my mom and sisters when it debuted on TV in the early 70's. I was four/five years of age and it scared the crap out of me.

The first act, specifically Jabba the Hutt and the rancor, from Return of the Jedi.  Mom and Dad took me to the theater to see it.  I would have been three or four depending on when in 1983 it came out.

I either slept through the rest of the movie or we left, because I have no memories of anything beyond Luke blowing up Jabba's barge.

Jesus, reading the post here make me feel old.

I have vague memories of the late night horror movie show my oldest brother (12 years older than me) used to watch late Saturday night and I would always cry to watch it with him (I seriously looked up to my oldest brother). Then I'd cry because it scared me so.

I think it was The 4D Man that freaked me out the most as a child when he shoved his arm through the solid brick or sheet of metal (it's been years since I've seen this movie) and I remember having this image of his ability vanishing and his arm being stuck in that thing.  Gave me nightmares for weeks.  I still have a stomach-churning problem with man-made objects embedded in human tissue.  I pray I never need a stent.

Earliest sci-fi is probably one of the many cartoons shows that I watched as a kid.  The one can can really remember is watching Ghidorah: the Space monster at my grandmother's house when I was much younger.  I was aware of monster movies, but I don't recall anything before that.

I do remember seeing part of Alligator at the drive-in before catching more of it on the late night movies on the local TV station.

Hmmm...  For horror it's a tie between The Shining and Alien.  For Sci-Fi, my dad bought me the entire Star Wars Trilogy for my 5th or 6th birthday.  I watched the hell outta those tapes.  :teddyr:

I couldn't tell you the first time I ever saw a Sci-Fi film. As soon as I was aware of anything, Sci-Fi was there. I've never been without it.

I can tell you my first experience with a straight horror film (stupid Children of the Corn), but Sci-Fi, my existence has literally never been without it.

The earliest sci-fi I can remember is watching reruns of the original Star Trek on TV.  And Space 1999, that was a huge favorite as well.  Oh, and Lost in Space and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, as well as the animated Star Trek.  And then there was the Logan's Run TV show, and Project Blue Book, and The Fantastic Journey.  For horror, maybe some made-for-TV movies from the '70s.  I'm sure the earliest things I saw were way before that, but that's as far back as my memory goes.

Not a B-movie, but my first horror memory was seeing YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN at the drive-in (probably age 9 or so).  It got me obsessed with monsters for a short time.

My first horror experiance was Chupacabra Terror, I rented it just because it was about the chupacabra, since I like researching about cryptozoology.
My first sf experiance was definitely the original Star Wars trilogy.

First Science Fiction experience was probably being plonked infront of the TV on a saturday to watch Cocoon or Innerspace.

This will certainly reveal my age. At around age 4, I remember seeing Invaders From Mars on TV and ads for Earth Vs the Spider and Rodan which had just opened in theaters. I was fascinated by the Martian Mankind (see my avatar) and I vividly remember the scene from The Spider of the woman screaming with her skirt caught in the car door as the spider approached. Scared the oatmeal out of me.

Am I the only one here who saw Tremors at a young age? I have a fond memory of watching Kevin Bacon & Fred Ward blowing up Graboids (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graboid)

As regards horror on TV, it was probably the Phillip Leacock TVM Baffled with Leonard Nimoy and then Crowhaven Farm with Hope Lange. They made some scary TV movies in the 70's, not so? I also vaguely remember watching Horror Express and Dark Secret of Harvest Home later ~ but what I will never forget is our holier than thou teacher in primary school asking us who had watched DSOHH and then reporting those who had to the principal.  :hatred: I told the principal that I had my parents' permission to watch it and that they watched it with me, a story which they corroborated.

Horror at the cinema: Race With The Devil  :buggedout: and I sneaked in to watch Phantasm.

That must the the opening of "A New Hope" with the star destroyer chasing that Rebel blockade runner - that's still a favorite movie moment of mine.
