Victoria Smurfit is pretty but the way she writes about the event irks me a little. I would say that tourists anywhere in the world on average don't get treated much differently than the residents would treat each other. In some parts of the world, admittedly (i.e., much of the Middle East), that's not necessarily a good thing.

She's not only an imminent authority on gangs, but she's also apparently the world's greatest criminal profiler. One of the fringe benefits of being a good-looking celebrity is that people will print anything you have to say, no matter how stupid it is.
I do think the Cape Town police handled it pretty well. She's babbling on about gang-related attempted murder, and they're just "Um...no. Not gang related, not targeted at you, and no evidence of any crime other than the illegal discharge of a firearm." All very calm and professional. That made me smile.
