Title: Quick heads-up for Nukie2
Post by: Trevor on February 05, 2010, 05:13:57 AM
Sias Odendaal's South African answer to ET, Nukie is being released on DVD in April 2010. I just got the word from the film's rights holders and I'll be writing the liner notes for that DVD.

Sorry: I meant "quick" not "quck".

Writing the liner notes for Nukie. I can't decide whether that's really cool or really sad.

Ah, who am I kidding? I'd buy it just to say I know the guy who wrote the liner notes. Is it going to be released in Region 1 right away?

Neat a Liner Note writer....Thats something.

Some of the descriptions in this Stomp Tokyo Classic review could be helpful:

I'll ship a packet of Y-fronts a year for a decade if you can get the phrase:
who looks like a shaven Oscar the Grouch dipped in chocolate

into the DVD notes.

Cool when the releasing company uses what I provide: not so cool when they don't.  :bluesad:

All the releases are on the O region so I don't know if they will play in the US and Canada ~ they should, I think.

I've done about fifty liner notes in the last year and more to come: remember, I don't get paid for doing it and I can't be ~ I just do it for the love of it.

I think you have a deal there, Ed: I've read that review and it's great.  :teddyr:

Region-free. Good to know. It wouldn't be a big deal to play a Region 2 disc here, but this is much better.

I used to see the box for this movie at the local video store for years, and never had the nerve to rent it. Too much of an obvious subpar ET knockoff. I think a friend and I might have snickered at it once or twice and moved on. But after seeing just how hilariously bizarre it is, I can't wait for this DVD.

The great Apostic on BNotes really laid a smackdown on the film especially where he said that co-director Sias Odendaal hadn't done another film and "may be this is a good thing".  :bouncegiggle:

That's awesome! I think it could be as big as Troll 2 if the rights-holders get it released in the USA. But they can't expect that much of a return initially. Most people wouldn't pay $20.00 for it here in USA-- I would, but I'm not most people. I think people would be willing to buy it for $5 at Wal-Mart, that's not a bad thing though, that's how most people bought the Troll 2 dvd. Plus there's also Redbox, I've seen that Brazilian Pixar knock-offs have been able to rent through that source.

Did you write the linear notes for the release of Space Mutiny too?

It will probably look something like this ~ there is a generic cover for all the MNet / NuMetro releases:

Just by the way ~ the film above is a film that Dr Trevor prescribes to people who are in need of a very good cry.

Will do ~ the picture of the sleeve of Katrina posted down below will give you some idea of what it looks like as there is a generic cover for each DVD in the MNet series.

My notes for the Nukie DVD ~ not approved yet.

Along with the David Winters / Neal Sundstrom directed Space Mutiny, Nukie is a famous South African film of the 1980’s. Famous, yes but for all the wrong reasons unfortunately. Both the former and the latter productions were made ~ in the horrible terminology of the South African 1980’s ~ for ‘the international market’ and failed, both here and overseas. Nukie ~ an obvious take-off of the Steven Spielberg film ET The Extraterrestrial ~ deals with two aliens, Nukie and Miko who are at first visible as two stars that crash-land to earth and later, in a physical form described by one critic as “looking like a shaved Oscar The Grouch dipped in chocolate” and another as “the only baboon ugly enough to frighten his own kind” which pushes their resemblance to ET a lot closer.

Ostensibly a children’s film ~ indeed, it was praised at a children’s film festival in the late 1980s ~ Nukie is the story of two lost alien brothers whose spaceships crash land on different continents (one in America and the other in Africa) and their search to find each other all the while communicating through their minds. Nukie befriends ~ or tries to befriend ~ various animals en route to locating his brother and, while dodging the attentions of a drunken White Hunter, makes a connection with two young African boys who attempt to help Nukie in getting home.

The first summary's hilarious!
The second is funny too, I like the subtly of "the attentions of a drunk white hunter". Which children's festival was it praised at?

Thanks, N2. There was a children's film festival in Italy where kids were the judges and they expressed their liking or otherwise of a film by the length of time they let the film run. According to the report, Nukie stayed the course and they ran it several times.  :buggedout:

Wow, I hope their parents were nice people. Yeesh!

Say, does Sias Odendall happen to have any of these lying around...

I like how they have Nukie covering up his face, like they were unsure what he was going to look like.
Also note the hunter aiming his gun at Nukie, how wholesome, right?

What b@stards! I'm sorry man!

It appears they may have cut some stuff out as this release is 84 min, when the VHS and laserdisk are at 99 min. So they're probably taking it seriously, as they say on the cover its a "golden oldie", a "golden oldie" with 15 min cut out of it, from 1988. They're not going to do well in sales saying it's a classic in the conventional sense.

They should have went with your idea-- the unintentional comedy.

Yeah, the heartwarming cover photo is a pretty good indication of where they want to go with it. That in itself is pretty funny, since it's a heartwarming picture of two cute kids, a kindly nun (so far so good) and a hydrocephalic Ross Perot with leprosy. These people really don't have a clue, do they? And labelling it a "South African golden oldie" just makes the whole country look bad. :teddyr:

No, it's his advert for the AbRoller.

So as I was typing Sias Odendal into the google search bar, and a "Sias Odendaal" came up instead,
it wouldn't surprise me if he added one more "a" to his name to distance himself from the movie for 20 years until now.
But I found a facebook account and a photo:

is this the face of the man who wrote and directed Nukie?

That is most likely him: 'Odendaal' is a very common South African name and I think they removed an a from his name to make it more international. Remember that South Africa was the outhouse of the world back then.

I spoke to Sias once, way back but I have never met the man. I have a pic of him from 1970, a tall skinny bugger sitting in a car's boot / trunk holding a camera.

Remember that South Africa was the outhouse of the world back then.

That certainly explains Nukie's appearance. :teddyr:

I had the Nukie DVD in my hands yesterday afternoon and while I am still very p****d at the company for not using my information, they did in fact use the cast and credit info that I supplied.

Oh yes ~ the sleeve says ALL ZONE.

I only just heard that Sias Odendaal passed away last year. Just thought I'd let you know.
