Title: Foods You're A Late Bloomer On
Post by: Mr. DS on February 21, 2010, 05:29:53 PM
Are there certain foods you avoided for years that one day you try and you're p!ssed at yourself for not trying soon.  Or perhaps foods that you tried once and hate but then tried again and later loved.

I used to hate the thought of eating cole slaw.  I tried it in my teens and promptly spit it out.  Years later I got take out from a local place and they gave cole slaw out as a side dish.  I said hell with it and tried it.  I ended up loving it.  So now I eat it frequently.

Onions.

Tomatoes: I used to hate them but now when I am in a very particular mood, I will eat them. I love them on subs. I still don't like chunks of tomato in salsa though. However, I do love salsa!

Spinach ...

As a kid I had only been exposed to spinach in a can.   Bleh! Absolutely hated it.  I didn't care if Popeye loved it.  Frozen didn't work for me either.

Years later I saw it at a salad bar. I decided to try it and loved it mixed with all the other greens.  The key was it was raw, not cooked.

I have gotten more adventurous since then.  I will saute it quickly in a pan with a little olive oil and garlic. Hardly cook it all.   Yum ...

Coleslaw for me too. Hated it as a kid. Could take it or leave it as a teenager. But now, I can make a whole meal of coleslaw. I've put it on sandwiches, tried it on burgers, and probably go through at least a bag of shredded cabbage and carrots every week. I'm the only one in the house who likes it, so if we go out for fish and chips, I'll be finishing two extra portions.

The other one is hummus. For years, nobody could get me to try that garlicky yellow slop. Chickpeas always struck me as gross, and pulverized ones were no less so. Plus, the name reminded me of humus. Not sure exactly when it happened, but some time in the past few years, I tried it and loved it. I've gotten it at restaurants, made my own and sometimes even pick it up at the grocery store to use as chip dip.

I've always hated raisins, and still do.  I don't like oatmeal.  However, I eat plain oatmeal with raisins and cinnamon (no sweetener) every morning.  It's good for you and the raisins add more fiber and flavonoids.

I didn't like uncooked tomato as a youngster, but now tomato uncooked and cooked is an important part of my diet and I like them (especially on big meaty subs where I kid myself into thinking that they make up for the fat and crap I'm otherwise eating).

I echo onions as a selection.  I can have them on just about anything now where as for the prior 30 years or so I avoided them like the plague.  Tomatos I actually only enjoy in salsa.  I grow them for that soul puprose alone.

Shrimp is another one that I just thought of.  I think my first official run in with shrimp was a surf and turf meal 5 years ago and I've enjoyed them ever since.   Though I try to limit my consumption due to them being high in cholesterol.

Oatmeal - hated it as a kid, but that was the unflavored stuff.  Now I eat it almost every day for breakfast.  The flavored stuff is pretty good.

Tuna has grown on me but I still am not crazy about it.  A nice tuna melt if done right is cool with me.  Speaking of which, I used to hate cheese melted on things.  Now I have a chicken quesedilla practically every night.

Crab and lobster. For years and years the very idea of eating such things was revolting to me. Then one day when out at a restaurant with friends, I sampled a friend's leftover crab legs. The next time I tried lobster. After than I was hooked. I love both crab (snow and king) and rock lobster. I can't ever get enough. It's just too bad it cost so damn much.

Tomatoes.  I used to hate them in anything, but now, I can at least eat them in a burger.  I still can't eat them raw, but I'm getting there...

Boring as it may be, I'd say lettuce.  I used to hate lettuce, and plain old salad but in recent years I've found that I enjoy it, but mostly in salads.

Oh yeah, I used to hate peppers (bell and chil and whatever) but now I love them so much.

I have become able to tolerate onions on White Castles or onions cooked to mushy oblivion, otherwise I can't stand the texture.  It makes me want to vomit.

same here. used to hate crab, then bought some about a year ago, bought some lobster just before xmas, loved it.

black olives as well. mmmm. still not too keen on green olives though. the black ones are a bit more fleshy and juicy tasting, green ones slightly bitter/dry

Mine are/were:
1) Oatmeal- Once I took the rolled oats out of the equation, its much better.   I like a mix of pinhead and whole groats.
2) Beets- Still trying

Yes.

Escargot, which is the fancy name for snails. Knew about them, never had them, till I went on a cruise, and one evening, when they were the recommended appetizer for dinner, I had them. And they were not that bad. They reminded me alot of garlic mushrooms, which is one of my favorite things to eat. The mushrooms. Not the garlic.

Few more I thought of;

1.) Stuffing - I'm not sure why I never dug this growing up.  Perhaps its the way my mother made it.  My grandmother in law makes a mean stuffing and one year I tried it.  I've been coming back ever since.

2.) Zucchini/Summer Squash - I grew it one year and learned it's abundance gives way to plenty of cooking experiments.  I find there are many way to cook it so it is enjoyable.

Hostess Snowballs!  Have you ever touched them?  They're like little coconut covered boobs.. squish squish!  I used to always squeeze them when I saw them at the store, but I never bought them.  My husband got them for me after I squeezed them once and now I'm hooked!  They're so good!  That darn cream filling!!

Who makes the food can make a big difference. I was never a fan of roasts growing up. But my mom would always get a cheap cut, season it with nothing but a tiny bit of salt and pepper, and roast it at the optimal temperature to cook it through in the least amount of time. The result was tough, dry, flavourless beef with far too much fat and gristle. She did the same thing with beef, pork and ham. The only roasts she prepared to my liking were chicken and turkey. But when I made my own roast beef, I did it low and slow, pan seared it before roasting and made sure it was well seasoned. It was like "Where have you been all my life?"

It's weird to have that sudden adult realization that your mother was merely a competent cook and not an outstanding one. There are a few things I thought I didn't like, but just discovered it was the way she made them. Still, I count myself fortunate, since I had a couple of friends growing up who could not claim to have even a competent cook at home.

Meatloaf is another one. My mom just mixed some hamburger, crackers and tomato soup, threw it in a pan and baked it fast. The result was a giant hamburger patty, which was OK, but I like to experiment, so I did mine low and slow, first baking it in the oven, then braising in broth and making a gravy to go over top. It melts in your mouth. My wife never liked meatloaf until she had mine.

Salsa- Kinda hard to describe, but a guy I work with, growing up in Mexico, his grandmother taught him a special recipe for it.  Dunno what he puts in it, but damn is it ever good.

Potato Balls- Not really a 'food' that's well known, to my knowledge.  But, I work in a restaurant, and we have a guy who does this wonderful dish that for months I refused to try.  But essentially, he gets something like, 15 potatoes and boils them up whole for 20 minutes or so.  After boiling, he then takes them to the back, mashes them down to a certain degree.  Takes them, adds some seasonings, and in the middle puts Chili.  Then, folds them back up into a ball, and fries them in a deep fryer for 5-10 minutes.  Add some hot sauce and ketchup as a seasoning on top.

Rye Bread. At one point in my life, I refused to eat any bread that wasn't white bread, but then I had a patty melt, and boy did my taste for bread change there.!

Nothing, really.  I've always enjoyed trying different foods and I seek out "unique" meals whenever possible.  One food I have never been able to conquer, though, is liver.  My mother used to make it occasionally (maybe once or twice a year) when I was a kid.  But she would always make something different for me and my sisters because she knew we didn't like it.  I was always willing to try it though . . . but even now at age 47 I cannot get myself to enjoy it.  If you put a piece in front of me today, I would taste it because I WANT to like it.  It just tastes awful to me.
