Dracula (1931)
turning into a bat

The Exorcist
the head spinning

Frankenstein (1931)
the lab

Jaws
the first death

King Kong
climbing up the Empire State Building

Lair of the White Worm
drowning of the boy scout in the bath tub

Nosferatu (1922)
rising from the coffin

The Omen (1970)
the impalement on a falling lightning rod

Phantasm

Phantom of the Opera (1925)
the unmasking

The Picture of Dorian Grey (1945)
the painting

Nothing more needs to be said. All that is needed is to show these iconic images from these fifteen horror films to identify these films.

Anymore?

Freddy Krueger - Any moment really, he pretty much just IS iconic.

By the way - can King Kong really be considered a horror? It's really more of an action advnture type film.

If I had to pick a specific Freddy picture, I'd go with the glove coming out of the bathwater.  Wouldn't you?

I'd say yes for King Kong.  He smushed/ate a bunch of people.

I'll throw in Chucky with either the voodoo knife in his hand or Tiffany by his side.

Jason with hockey mask on his face and a machete in his hand.

Michael Berryman just posing with a crazed look on his face and dressed in human skin clothing, for Hills Have Eyes.

Any image of Michael with the mask, jumpsuit and kitchen knife for the Halloween movies.

Torgo with his staff and satyr legs for Manos.  Or maybe the Master raising his arms, but Torgo really makes the movie the cult phenom that it is.

Sigourney Weaver in undies for Aliens. Funny, because it is not really a horror image (unless you really dislike Mrs. Weaver).

The reverse bear-trap in Saw

The Brain cooking scene in Hannibal

Hannibal Lecter's escape in the Silence of the Lambs

The crying in front of the camera scene in The Blair Witch Project

The bee kiss scene in Candyman

The spinning torture device in Hellraiser

The first scene of Scream where Drew barrymore's character is killed

Dawn of the Dead- Roger's face after he pulls the covers down after going zombie.

Shaun of the Dead- Shaun with the cricket bat and the red stain on his pocket.

Deep Red- The doll...

Saw- Also the doll... (inspired by Deep Red, if I'm not mistaken)

Xtro- The birthing scene.

Zombi 2- Splinter, anyone?

Sleepaway Camp- Wiener, anyone?

Poltergeist- The clown attacking Robbie.

For Freddy, I'd pick the scene where he turns the guy into a marionette with his veins.  :buggedout:

Psycho, the falling backwards down the stairs knife scene...sometimes almost sets off my own vertigo.

Psycho, the big reveal as to "Mother".

The Wolf Man transformation sequence and him creeping through the fog

Renfield laughing maniacally in the hold of the ship

The scream in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

The UFO landing scene in INvaders From Mars.

The Invaders From Mars drilling holes into the back of people's necks.

The playground scene in The Birds

Some have already brought up Silence of the Lambs, but to me, the iconic moment that immediately identifies the film is the shot of "I ate his liver, with some fava beans, and a nice Chianti" followed by the savoring slurping sound. That's the iconic moment.

A few not mentioned...
. Lon Chaney being unmasked by Mary Philben in the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925).
.The CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1955) swimming under Julie Adams.
.The steel masked vampire clawing from the grave in BLACK SUNDAY (1960).
.Karloff howling with greif as he cradles a dead Lugosi in the SON OF FRANKENSTEIN (1939).
.the FREAKS (1932) crawling through the mud to enact their revenge.
.Conrad Veidt being awakened from his sleep in The CABINENT of DR.CALIGARI (1919).

I got a bunch of them!

The graves bursting through the pool ground in Poltergiest.

The car rumbling as the T-Rex approachs in Jurassic Park.

The wails of the giant ants during the desert storm and first appearance of them in Them!

The thing smashing through the door into the dark room where everybody is waiting for it in The Thing from Another World.

The lady smashing the guy's feet in Misery.

The zombies emerging from the water in Land of the Dead.

Robot Bobbie going haywire in The Stepford Wives.

The pool scene in Cat People.

The girl walks out of the TV in The Ring.

Mike Myers sits up after being stabbed in Halloween.

Wormface in Squirm.
The shaving zombie in Day Of The Dead.
Henrietta in the basement, pushing at the cellar trap door in Evil Dead II.
Michael stabbing the nurse from behind in Halloween II.

"Nosferatu" (1922)
The vampire's shadow cast on the wall as he opens the door.

"The Thing" (1982)
The shot of the frozen Norwegian who committed suicide at the radio.

"Night of the Demon" (1957)
The title creature's visage as it swoops down the train tracks toward its final victim.

In the Bride of Frankenstein, when the bride "hisses" at the creature.

.The steel masked vampire clawing from the grave in BLACK SUNDAY (1960).

The Bride hissing is a moment I never would have thought of, but it's perfect.  The steel masks of those damned in "Black Sunday" are another great one.  If you've ever seen the movie, those masks stick with you.

A few more that stuck with me-

.The dinner table scene in the 1974 TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.
.The skeleton warroirs vs. Jason in JASON AND the ARGONAUTS. (ok...mebbe not a 'horror' film per se-but those skeletons were scary!)
.agin-not quite a horror film-but the Cyclops roasting a poor shmuck on a spit in the GOLDEN VOYAGE of SINBAD.
.Julian West dream of being buried alive in VAMPYRE (1932).
.Christopher Lee baring fangs in the HORROR OF DRACULA (1958)

YIKES!

So many good horror films. So many memorable images. Anymore?

As to whether "King Kong" is a horror film or not, some say it is. Some say it is not. But I have seen it listed in lists of horror films.

And thanks for correction Allhallowsday. I wondered about that. But I associated Lugosi, as Dracula, turning into a bat, that I had it down as one of my most memorable images, even if I got it in the wrong film.

King Kong is a monster movie.  If monster movies aren't horror movies, they'e at least invited to the same parties.
