This Fame or Shame game I think can be put to use on a wrestling thread. Simply use the different wrestlers and their gimmicks. I say leave the federations and titles out of this list though...let's just keep it to wrestlers. Regular Fame or Shame game rules apply.

I too feel that Luger was always overrated.  Granted he probably has more wrestling talent than Hogan (not saying much) but Hogan at least had carisma.

The Evil Doink was a great gimmick but they ruined it by turning him babyface. Ric Flair was the guy who always delivered great match after match in the 80s and early 90s and even pulled off a few good ones way, way past his prime.

Hogan lacked in ring skills, but in Japan put on some great matches.  But, in my youth (born in '84 here), he was the guy who got me interested in wrestling to begin with.  Due to charisma alone, and the fact that he had great guys like Piper to work against.

I highly agree with Luger being overrated, at least as far as WWF/E goes (never watched much WCW).   It irritated me that WWF in the early 90's had some popular guys that were ready for the main event spot at the time and they just turned Luger from hated heel to babyface Hulk clone overnight.  I know they're options were limited without Hogan going into Summerslam '93, but there were a bunch of other guys who were rising fast that would have worked just as well, if not better.

As for a system for voting, I simply have decided to choose to Save the wrestler I consider most deserving of a real Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame spot and to Kill the wrestler (or gimmick) least deserving. Someone else might rather vote on the basis of gimmick. It's all very subjective since pro wrestling is a "worked" sport anyway but winning major titles and having success everywhere you've went means a lot IMO. Lex Luger, while definitely someone I'd say was overrated had a lot of success. He did win many major titles, most in WCW/NWA and did have great matches with Barry Windham, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Brian Pillman, Michael Hayes, Stan Hansen and Hulk Hogan. Doink however was a gimmick played by several different wrestlers (the best of whom was Maniac Matt Borne) and while the gimmick of an evil clown initially got over, after he turned babyface he faded into obscurity and he didn't win any major titles or even have a truly memorable feud.

I understand what you're saying.  But, the thought of an evil wrestling CLOWN getting over in any capacity is unbelievable, but Borne made it work.  And it wasn't his fault he turned "babyface", that was management.  Even at that point, it could've worked, but his personal demons got the better of him and he left the company.  But, even today, when they trot out the gimmick for an occasional match, the character still gets a decent reaction. :buggedout:

Luger had all the chances in the world.  Quite frankly, he could've been a bigger star but he shot himself in the foot.  I was never a fan, never saw the hype, and felt he should've been in the range of tag champ or US Champ, never given a World Title.  And for all the good matches he had, I'd say it had more to do with the people he was working with making him look better (Flair, Steamboat, and Pillman had a knack of having great matches with guys with minimal talent, making them appear better than they truly were.)  Not knocking Foley, but Flair had a match with him back in '06 and it was a decent match, despite Flair being damn near like, 57, and Foley being a semi-retired 3 match a year competitor with a bad back.  If that's not a testament to his ability, I dunno what is.

I agree that Luger was overrated but I still cannot forget he had many great matches, especially in his pre-WWF NWA days. In addition to those named above, Luger had some great matches with Nikita Koloff, Sting, the Steiners, Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard. He formed good tandems with Windham and Sting, although Windham turning on him to join the Horsemen was classic. Still as I understand it, Luger was never really a big fan of wrestling and I think it tended to show in a lot of his work. He probably could have done a lot more if the interest and enthusiam had been there.

Again, I think he was carried in a lot of those matches.  If you see his post '98 run in WCW, he had horrible matches.  Ironically, that's when I liked his CHARACTER the most.  He was a smug prick at the time.  Ultimately, I'll always choose Doink before Luger.  But, I'm surprised no ECW competitor made this initial list.

I'm sure some will get nominated eventually. I simply picked the five names at random, the first to my mind will always be competitors from the 1980s (as that's my favourite era of pro wrestling) yet I felt we needed a gimmick guy on the list too.

Actually you wouldn't be the first to criticize Abdullah. Some say he killed every town in which he appeared...as an attraction who would be brought in and would quickly leave as the going got tough. Also he was only capable of doing an handful of moves most of his career and made up for the rest carving guys up with plastic knives and forks, and a few real forks too. That said, I do consider him a legend whereas I don't Doink.

I respect the comments about Abdullah but from my standpoint, he was doing hardcore matches way before they were popular.  Granted now the hardcore stuff is overdone but he was a forerunner.

I love the Undertaker...went to my first two events last year after being a 20 year wrestling fan.  One was a non-televised event on the boardwalk that WWE did, and the second was a SmackDown taping, where I finally got to see the Undertaker live.  LOUDEST ovation of the night, and it was an event with John Cena, Kane, Jericho, and a few other top guys.

I mostly cheer the heels though, but Taker could still go for being 44.

Sandman is an intersting nomination.  Just like Abby, a true hardcore legend but at this point I'm not sure how I'll vote on him.  Abdullah I had to give at least one "save" to in the past as respect for his bloody in-ring efforts.

I had to throw a Save in for Ricky Steamboat, a wrestler that Steve Austin once referred to as the best he was ever in the ring with. Ric Flair too has sung high praises for Steamboat's in-ring work and lest we not forget Steamboat vs. Randy Savage stealing the show at Wrestlemania III. All of these guys deserve to be in the Hall of Fame IMO. Least deserving to me though seems to be the Sandman who will be more remembered for his entrances than a lot of his in-ring work.

Although I've "killed" him once, I have to admit its hard for me to off Ricky Steamboat.  I really think he was a decent in ring techinician.  He pulled some good feuds with Ric Flair but I've read Vinnie Mac had things against him at certain points of his career.  Hence why he had a hard time getting out of midcard.

I'm not knocking Abdullah, but I'm relatively young (26) and I'd say he's had his biggest successes before I was born.  I only really got to see him in his brief run in ECW in '93 when I was 9.  I'm sure there's videos out there, I just don't know where besides YouTube.

I've got to throw another save out to Ricky Steamboat. He's been in way too many good matches and feuds to not show some appreciation for all his work. He is without a doubt one of the best babyfaces, if not the best, of all-time constantly getting attacked by different heels and injured and then coming back and getting his Dragon's revenge. He's kind of like the wrestling version of Bruce Lee in some ways.  :bouncegiggle:

Steamboat is a good wrestler.  I was torn between killing him and Sandman.  I like everyone on the list, really, but the difficulty is what makes it enjoyable.

I don't dislike Hillbilly Jim but he just didn't have any real impact during his stay in WWF IMO. The Country boy gimmick went over well and it was introduced with him as a Hulk Hogan fan in surprisingly believable fashion. He was also very popular and surprisingly charismatic. Still the country boy gimmick wasn`t really new to wrestling given Haystacks Calhoun to name but one. Plus Hillbilly was in far too many goofy matches such as a tuxedo match vs. Mr. Fuji.

I'm right with you Jasse, Hillbilly Jim had it's place in time which fit nicely into Vince McMahon's gimmick-fest.  Matter of fact HJ could probably be considered a forerunner of it all when it came to silly gimmicks. However, as for lasting impressions I'll vote in the nill.

Steamboat's a large part of the reason I became a fan. Everyone always seemed to like the Dragon. He was arguably the best babyface in wrestling history (with only JYD as a likely rival). Granted he was never able to be an heel which some may hold against him but man what great matches he gave us against Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Rick Rude, Steve Austin, Magnificent Muraco, Jake Roberts, Bret Hart and so many more...

Funk is awesome man! Always was a bit crazy in the ring although he was also a solid in-ring wrestler back in his NWA World Champ days. Sorry to kill Hillbilly Jim but he just wasn't all that memorable overall in terms of his contributions IMO. I now nominate former Global Champion and former WWF star circa mid-late 90s The Patriot (AKA: Del Wilkes/The Trooper in AWA). I had the privilege of seeing ECW live twice (pre WWE nonsense) and both shows were beyond the best live events I've ever been to.  Initially however aq friend turned me on to it during the later part of the 90s.  He showed me a match with Raven and Tommy Dreamer.  It was a full out brawl.  However, the later part of tape had matched like Too Cold Scorpio vs Eddie Guerrero which were insanely technical.  It was a wonderful promotion back in the day.  

I never got to see them while they were the 'original' promotion (too young, but watched on tv.)  However, I went to a WWE event a while back on the sole basis of them having some older ECW guys I liked as part of the show, like Tommy Dreamer.

Mick Foley had so many great moments.  Not a great 'technical' wrestler, by far, but, I feel he compensated for that by trying to get some other wrestlers over with what skills he had.  Plus, while the last 4-5 years aren't his "best" matches, helping get some younger guys like Randy Orton over, or Carlito, speaks volumes.  Even when he was at his 'peak', so to speak, he was helping out with guys like The Rock and HHH.  Plus Dude Love is my favorite character.

Steamboat was pretty good in the ring.  Hell, he was even good at WrestleMania last year agains Jericho.  I was too young to appreciate it then, but I appreciate it now.

Goldberg...not a great "Technical" wrestler.  But, I give him SOME credit.  He was a huge draw who made the most of his limitations as a wrestler.  And, he was a great PR man for the industry.  Countless hours with various children's and animal charities, at a time in wrestling when guys like Hogan and Savage were all about themselves, trying to save their careers from ending.

Re: Tag Teams? I'm not sure. I mean we have tag teams who are mostly known for that (Road Warriors, Dudleys) but we have others in which there was a very successful singles wrestler and a less successful one (Rockers, Hart Foundation) yet the tag teams deserve much recognition too and we have teams where there was two successful singles grapplers (Briscoes, Funks) and makeshift tag team who were successful. Where do we draw the line on who's included? Demolition Ax was also the Masked Superstar so should both gimmicks be nominated or only one? Hmm to keep things consistent seems to me it's perhaps best to concentrate on one wrestler at a time but hey I could probably be convinced otherwise too.

Perhaps we could do another thread featuring tag teams?  Theres probably enough to keep the game going for a bit.

I'm not sure how that'd work.  You have some teams that were almost exclusively teams, least for a while: Edge and Christian, Hardy Boyz, The Acolytes, New Age Outlaws, DX (HBK and HHH).  Then they eventually separataed for singles success.

Then you got some teams: Kaientai, Rock and Roll Express, Dudley Boyz, Nasty Boyz, Legion of Doom, Public Enemy who exclusively competed together for the most part and had tremendous success. 

Then there's teams who had success, but were thrown together cause they were two successful stars who worked well together: The Two-Man Power Trip (HHH and Steve Austin), The Rock and Sock Connection (Foley and The Rock), Benoit and Jericho, Sting and Lex Luger, The Mega Powers (Hogan and Savage), The Brothers of Destruction (Undertaker and Kane), and so on.

And some of ECW's teams were good too: The Eliminators, The Gangstas, Public Enemy, The BWO, Ian and Axl Rotten.

I'd say if we included a team, you'd have to focus more on what they accomplished as a team while they were together, and forgo the singles success out of it.

RVD is such a fun wrestler.  I'm a big fan going back to his ECW days, felt he was mishandled in WWE (except for that brief couple of weeks when he was ECW and WWE champ or whatever), and am glad that he's not only in TNA but is their champion.

RVD to me is the prime example of everything wrong with modern era wrestling - just all flash and no substance. The guy is reckless in the ring too. Just going through the motions of his usual predictable spots and his bad habits seriously cost him some major time atop WWE. To me, RVD is the wrestling equivalent of CGI ruining movies nowadays.

There's a lot of wrestlers though that are all flash and no 'substance.'  Guy like Ultimate Warrior comes to mind.  Granted, he was immensely popular (why, I'll never understand), but he had the same 5 minute match every night: run to the ring, pose, hit a few clotheslines, pose, pose some more, gorilla press, body splash, clothesline, another splash, win, pose, and run backstage.

John Cena too: punch, punch, punch, pose, clothesline, 5 Knuckle Shuffle, leg drop from top rope, Attitude Adjustment, pin. 

RVD was a bit reckless, but I like him a hell of a lot better than guys like Jeff Hardy, who couldn't work worth a lick and was immensely popular.  Granted I'm probably a bit younger than you and grew up during a different era of wrestling.  I didn't get to see the glory days of wrestling with the NWA having shows that featured two guys having an hour long match.  I grew up when it was ECW and WCW having the cruiserweight guys like Eddie Guerrero, RVD, Rey Mysterio, etc. going out and having the crazy matches, and guys like Malenko and Benoit having 20 minute classics.  I'd say the "BEST" overall wrestler of the past decade is Kurt Angle.

You make some good points Happy. RVD just seemed to me personally to personify the changes I was seeing in pro wrestling  (He was the guy I most noticed did the same routine night after night I guess although more so after he came to WWE I admit) which has unfortunately become less and less about iin-ring match psychology and more about guys hitting their prime spots match after match. I recall fans ooing and awing over RVD's acrobatics...when I was a kid, we were doing similar for Steamboat....

I gotta say, I can't sit there and take away from Steamboat.  I got some dvd's that WWE put out (a couple Flair dvd's, a Stone Cold Steve Austin dvd, amongst others) and they feature some great Steamboat matches.  The one Flair dvd has some hour long match they had in like, '88 or '89 at I think it was Chicago's Clash of the Champions.  Good good stuff.

Lesnar was a fine wrestler.  Big, powerhouse, had technical skills, and wasnt' afraid to go to the top rope on occasion.  But the problem there was: He was pushed to far, too fast, and within a limited time accomplished so much that he got bored and left.

Lesnar from what I could gather never really wanted to be a pro wrestler, at least never seemed fully committed to it, despite being pushed to the moon ahead of more deserving wrestlers. He left when he couldn't get his own (he wanted lots of time off) way all the time. Plus he nearly killed himself and others a couple of time with dangerous moves he shouldn't have been doing and it was obvious his appeal was waning on fans by Wrestlemania XX. Slaughter is far more deserving of recognition here IMO as he always remained loyal and true to wrestling and worked much harder to get what he achieved.

I can see your point, and it's valid to a degree.  Especially about Slaughter.
I think with Lesnar is, and I don't know him personally, but he seems to be the kinda guy that STRIVES to succeed and get to the top.  Problem is, Vince gave him a big ass contract, pushed him to the moon in very little time cause he thought he could make big money off him.  ANd he did.  Problem is, Brock accomplished all he needed to: won every title multiple times, main evented pay-per-views, and had matches and feuds with all the top guys: Goldberg, Undertaker, Rock, Hogan, HHH, Booker T, RVD, Edge. 
Yeah, he wanted some time off, but I don't blame him to an extent.  Doing a schedule where you're on the road 300-340 days a year wears you down.  There was nothing left for him to accomplish.  What next? Bring out a feud with Funaki? A feud with Rico? That's a step down, not up.  I think the event with WrestleMania XX wasn't so much that his appeal was waning, but fans were p**sed that they helped him get to the top, and he p**sed on them and said "I wanna do football instead."  Then that bombed, and he went to UFC.  Ironically, those same fans who booed him at WrestleMania, are fans of his in UFC.

Bruno was like the Hulk Hogan of his era but also had a certain ethnic appeal being an Italian hero. Bruno while he always played the straight and narrow as a face was a fantastic brawler and always really opened up on those he feuded with when it was seen as O.K. by the fans as "giving as good as was given him". I doubt any other wrestler will ever hold a World title for over 7 years straight and nearly 11 years in total.

Shoot, in today's era of wrestling, it's uncommon for a wrestler to even be with a company for 11 years, let alone hold a belt for more than 6 months.

Lawler was a fantastic heel at times and he's an old-time wrestler new grapplers should definitely study but he was always to me more of a Tennessee/Memphis legend than really anywhere else.

Essentially, yeah.  I mean, I was thinking it was just me thinking that.  But, I feel the same way about wrestlers from up here (Philly, hence my love of ECW guys) than about others.  I dunno.  I'm not saying he's bad.  I just like the other 4 better.

I liked Storm's in ring work in every company I've seen him in.  He could be a little dull, but I found his work in WCW to be quite fun, especially his winning the US Title, Cruiserweight Title, and Hardcore Title, then re-naming them the Canadian Heavyweight Title, The 100kg and Under Title, and the Saskatchewan Hardcore International Title. :teddyr:

I'd agree, he isn't at the same level.  But some people work best in factions and stables, which is ashame, really.  Jim Neidhart would be one I'd throw in there.  Marty Jannetty too.  Great in teams and stables, but solo, not as much.

Personally, I felt that in the initial stages of WWE's "Brand Extension" storyline, with the Raw/Smackdown split, Storm should've gotten a major push on Smackdown as a singles.  He got one in teams, but WWE completely mis-marketed him, first as a janitor at WWE New York, looking for a job, then as an Un-American in post 9/11, then as "Boring."  At the time, Smackdown was the vastly better written show, focusing on great WRESTLERS, showcasing great matches with guys like Benoit, Guerrero, Edge, Jericho, Christian, Mysterio, Brock Lesnar, Tajiri, Kurt Angle, John Cena, Haas, Benjamin and Chavo Guerrero.  If they had some kinda way to incorporate Storm, even without a 'title', but having him in the mix to help elevate the others, he ultimately could've found a following, with a push of maybe the US Title.  Sad, really, because if Mysterio and Benoit could be pushed to the top with rather dull personalities, so could Storm.  Hell, Bob Backlund carried the belt for 6 years and was a rather dull character.  Sure, he was a draw, but I'm saying.

Actually you'd be surprised just how popular Backlund really was in his day. There's a reason you're kept champ for that long- it's because you draw a crowd and Backlund did especially in New York. He was very much an All-American hero, kind of like a face version of Kurt Angle in his era.

Believe it or not, I agree with you Jase.  I know that sounds odd, cause of my unabashed love of the organization.  My votes for Raven, though, have less to do with him today (he's not as good as he was ten years ago, and even then he wasn't a great 'technical' wrestler), but more to do with him in his run from '95-'97 in ECW and his runs in WCW and WWE.  At that point he was at the 'peak' of his career.  I did watch TNA's Tribute (or whatever you'd call it) HardCORE Justice.  Some highlights occurred, notably 2 Cold Scorpio being in as great a shape as he was in the early '90s and being able to pull out these great high flying maneuvers despite age.

Scorpio has always been awesome IMO aside from his forgettable stint as Flash Funk in the WWF. Strangely he never seemed to normally get used right in the U.S. although WCW did a nice job of introducing him in 1992. I've seen a nice bit of his work in Pro Wrestling NOAH (2000-2006) where he was very impressive winning the GHC Tag team titles with Doug Williams and Vader and the GHC Openweight Hardcore title...

I know Brawler was a good hand in his role as an enhancement talent from his days as Steve Lombardi to his reinvention as the Brooklyn Brawler under manager Bobby "The Brain" Heenan (whom Heenan took on during his feud with Red Rooster Terry Taylor) up till a surprise return to challenge Triple H for his World title. He just didn't leave any real memorable mark and seemed to never truly rise above his enhancement guy position, not that there was really anything wrong with him maintaining steady work in that position.

I like Lombardi a lot.  He deserves more credit than he gets.  He went on something like, a 5 year losing streak in the early to mid '80s, but stuck with it because his dream was to make a living as a wrestler.  Not only did he earn a fairly decent living as a wrestler, he's built up a small but somewhat sizable fan base, and was even blessed with an action figure despite being a 'jobber.'  Not only that, but isn't he something like, one of the lonest employed wrestlers in WWE history?  Granted, the past few years he's been mostly a 'behind the scenes' guy, but occasionally he hits a lot of house shows to perform in the ring to 'put over' younger, upcoming guys like Zack Ryder.

As good as Malenko was and he was quite good, like Lance Storm he lacked that certain level of charisma and worked best in teams and groups. While he was a great wrestler, he was also kind of bland. Probably a bit underrated though.

I gotta say, Malenko was a great, great wrestler.  To me he deserves any and all recognition.  He was a big reason I watched Nitro, and a LOT of people watched Nitro.  He has a strong set of fans out there.  Never a "Big" star, but a great wrestler.  Problem with this current list is, I like every single wrestler mentioned.

I will say this though: my first Live Event, wrestling wise, was a non-televised event last summer down at the Jersey Shore.  A WWE House Show.  We had great seats, first row, center, ramp, so we got to be right at the ring.  During a break in action, I went to grab a beer.  The way the arena is designed, we have to pass some of the lighting/music guys.  One of them on this particular night: Dean Malenko.  I completely just, I dunno, marked out and screamed at him "Malenko."  He was busy, but gave a quick "You're the only one who recognized I was even here" and kindly went back to work. :teddyr:

Regal is a vastly underrated performer.  He gets pushed to the side now, and is mostly used in comedy matches from what I've gathered.  But, he's a great comedic performer and puts his all in it, and he makes others look better.  Been a fan for years.

In short, no.  Quite frankly he's often overlooked.  He carried Harlem Heat to decent matches, and was a deserving world champ.  Shame really, cause a lot of people only remember him for carrying the title of a dying promotion than his great matches.  Hell, look at his team with Goldust.  Should've been vying for the world title but gave his all and had a fun team while it lasted.

Yeah I always liked Booker actually but he really got hurt when WCW died. WWE seemed reluctant to push a former WCW guy as a top star and it was only when he re-invented himself as King Booker he seemed to get ahead in WWE. He had some awesome matches back during his WCW TV title reign against Chris Benoit and Fit Findley...

Ladd was actually a very good big man and worked a great arrogant heel gimmick once claiming to be a King. Is well known for his football background but honestly I don't think he compares in ring with the other talent currently on the list but that's only my opinion.
