Apparently, the damage done by SMB: The Movie has been far reaching.

I'm glad they say no, that's quite refreshing to hear they're being cautious and not whoring out the licences to their characters. In my opinion there's only 3 Nintendo games that would be worthy of a film conversion and they are; Zelda, Metroid and Metal Gear. I am still baffled as to why a Zelda movie didn't come out in the late 80s or early 90s as it probably would have been a cheesy sword & sorcery epic. If they did it now though along with the other two aforementioned games then I'm certain they would just be glossy, soulless GCI fests for the fanboys dollars...

I think Metal Gear would be a great license for films that could be action filled and fairly realistic, given the current state of technology. Since this has gone to Playstation, couldn't they pimp this to film studios, or does Nintendo hold ultimate control over the license?

Zelda would be turned into a joke, just like the awful animated series they made. And Metroid could be kick butt, but the big secret of the series is too well known by fans, so it would be lost in a movie. Imagine sitting through a 2 hour, non-stop action film to find out the person who slaughtered the alien hordes was a beautiful, blond honey. That would freak people out in the theaters, if they didn't have the internet to ruin the minor ending twist. Notice, I say minor, because the bulk of the film would be about the weaving of story and action.

Mario...it is best as a video game.

Nintendo never had any control of Metal Gear.  Metal Gear premiered on the MSX, and was then ported to the NES.  So, it's not in any way a Nintendo franchise.  Point in fact, a Metal Gear film has been touch-and-go for years.

As Jim stated, Metal Gear is a Konami product.

And yeah, I agree that Nintendo shouldn't whore out their movies.  It's bad enough that other companies are will to jump like fleas on a dog at every chance to have a game made into a film.  It's thanks to that that Uwe Boll and Paul WS Anderson have ruined many a game-movie concept, not to mention that horrible Max Payne movie.

It's just too bad Nintendo isn't as careful with the placement and quality of their characters in GAMES as they are with movies.  Mario has been in quite a few mediocre and even bad games in the past 10 years.  The Mario Party series is soooo boring now, for one example.

Personally, I think the only Nintendo series that could be adapted quite well into a movie is probably Metroid.

No, I said it would suck as a CGI reliant film...
