Title: Anyone know of any horror/fantasy movies?
Post by: The Gravekeeper on April 23, 2010, 01:11:16 AM
I love both genres, but I honestly don't know of any movies where they meet. Heck, that particular hybrid is pretty rare even in literature. I suppose you could technically call Lovecraft films horror/fantasy since there are elements of magic in them, but I'd like to try a bit of a different flavour from them.

Maybe if you gave us your definition of 'fantasy' it would get us started?

How about Snow White:  A Tale of Terror?

How about Snow White:  A Tale of Terror?

That's a good one, also A Company of Wolves I think is more fantasy than the average werewolf movie. These are folklore/fairy tales with a grimmer (no pun intended) edge to them.

I'd say ARMY OF DARKNESS fits the bill.

I was going to say that one too!  It is more fantasy but it's pretty creepy.

Pan's Labyrinth is kind of horror/fantasy.  I thought The Dark Crystal was scary, but I guess it depends on how frightening muppets can be to you.

Paquita is scared of Muppets?  But...but...but...they aren't much taller than you. Really. <ducks as Paquita slings a dirty diaper my way>

Interesting topic. I hope somebody finds a good film that fits this bill. Hell, I hope somebody makes a good film that fits this bill.

The Company of Wolves was a good suggestion, but not quite what you're looking for.

You want an even worse suggestion? Troll. It fits your criteria.

Eyes of Fire (1983) and Born of Fire (1983). Both are not related btw.
I guess The Manitou (1978) sort of falls into the fantasy (and sci-fi) category.

Final Fantasy The Spirits Within.  I guess it's more action/adventure than horror, but it's definitely got a fair amount of horror elements in it.

How about The Brothers Grimm.  With the late Heth Ledger, Matt Damon and Monica Bellucci.   Tried playing on some of the horror elements that are in the early versions of fairy tales-but maybe a bit more of an action film.

I'll agree with Troll, and Pan's Labryinth

There's also Grimm which is about an orge released and terrorizes some people in a cave.  Which leads me to the syfy channel original Orge.  Both movies with somewhat fantasy elements.

Minotaur, Leprechaun, Cerberus, Wishmaster all have fantasy creatures

Legend is the one that immediately springs to mind.  It's really pretty horrorific at times.

A Nightmare on Elm Street really qualifies as a fantasy/horror, also Elves (1989), Gremlins, The Prophecy, Warlock

The best matches I can think of are all Asian cinema.

Kwaidan
A Chinese Ghost Story (1-3)
Yokai Monsters
The Great Yokai War

A lot of these also border on action, or contain a lot of action.

I suppose that "Beowulf" with Lambert qualifies, but it is definitely more a dumb action film than a horror.

"Black Sunday" is close.

Thanks a lot guys! I'm adding quite a few of these on my "to see" list. Next time I visit my parents I'm going to have to browse around the cult film rental place in their city to see if they have some of these.
