Title: War of the Robots
Post by: Andrew on May 11, 2010, 08:14:29 AM
This was the film that almost broke the audience’s back at B-Fest 2010, and nearly got me lynched in the process. Lady Gaga’s android army returns in this Italian space opera that is desperately in need of an editor.  Every scene, and I do mean every scene, lasts five times longer than it should.  The climatic final battle takes almost half an hour.  You will probably be wishing it would end after five minutes – six minutes tops.

Another great review.  I have never seen this movie before or heard of it.  Maybe that is for the best.  That movie seems to drag on and on and on and on and on and on...

Anyways, let's see what this epic space fight looks like...

I remember really liking this series of movies. They're absurd and hypnotic and sometimes it felt like I was drifting out of my own consciousness.

But that might have been the weed.

I've owned a copy of this blessed film for years.  It's my poster child for a "skull" rated bad movie.   This movie was also the first movie I ever watched with my wife back when I first met her.  Just the fact that she sat through the whole thing with me is testament to her strong will.

The thing I remember most from this movie, besides the painfully long battle scene in the end is the fact that it seems whenever one of the wig wearing robots gets shot: 1.  Their timing is always WAY off, often they fall down almost a minute after being zapped.  2.  When they get zapped, they always grab their stomachs (and some of them grab near their crotches) before they fall down.
 :bouncegiggle:

The camera person obviously wasn't manning the camera half the time either.  People constantly walk out of frame or the shots just aren't centered right.  The camera man LOVED to zoom in on people obviously without looking through the lens.  This combined with the mentioned cropping produces some funny scenes where people are talking and you don't see their heads or one scene that I find hilarious in one of the control rooms where just this guy's nose is sticking out of the side of the screen.

That clip had me laughing out loud.   It was so slow, like an Atari 2600 game on slow mo.   This one is right up my alley!

I have this movie and the evil cousin, Star Odyssey.  This movie is painful. I thought that this was reviewed a while ago???

Anyhooo, good review.  I will subject myself to pain again.

Later,

John

Ha ha ha!

Reading your description of B-Fest made me laugh. Actually watching the clip makes me pity the poor people you subjected it to.

You're reaching almost Andy Kaufman levels of making people hate you, Andrew. I can laugh about it because I wasn't in the audience. If I was, I probably wouldn't be so forgiving.

I did "Star Odyssey" fairly recently.  Maybe that is what you remember?

Ha ha ha!

That mini-story was fun to write, and it makes me laugh, because the people in the audience behind me were just seething with anger at the film and at me.  I was prepared to sell my life dearly if they attacked.

In my defense I wasn't the one who picked that film, and I even went stag at B-Fest this year - so I had no idea which movies were on the lineup until they hit the screen.  My humor at the audience's expense was my way of dealing with the film.

The camera is all over the place.  I've wondered what a original aspect ratio print would look like, because I'm betting most prints are cropped.

That final space battle looks about 1/10th as exciting as a game of asteroids  :teddyr:

"Roger, Jack, Sonya, and Paul - Other members of the spaceship Trissa's crew. Some die. Some don't. I don't know who is who."

Andrew, you mean you couldn't tell the difference between whether they were alive or dead based on their performance? I couldn't.

I remember getting VERY angry every time that so *NOT* from Texas guy name-dropped Texas or flashed his cowboy boots to try and sell us that he was indeed from Texas. Hack characterization can be hilarious in its ineptness, or it can just make you want to hurt everyone involved.

My best friend fell out of his chair and died on the floor no less than 5 times during the "climactic" final space battle. Truly one of the worst things I've ever seen.

Cleary this ...movie... was sponsored, if not made, by Hoffmann–La Roche Ltd; the creators of Valium. Perhaps this was an experiement in inducing deep sleep via non-chemical means? Overdosing on Valium is safer. Or maybe Diazapam addicts were the target audience. They were clearly the main group among the cast and crew.

I saw this when I was 16... I wasn't impressed back then (and I was easy to impress back then) and that still hasn't changed...

I watched the clip ...I think I died at some point, I'm not sure...

Ah, War of the Robots...
Andrew, I'm surprised that you left out some of the "exciting" stuff in your review.  How about the harrowing sequence when Captain John Boyd (Antonio Sabato Sr.!) must slowly and ineptly float to the satellite to retrieve...something...and must come back with the...whatever...before his suit bursts in an equally slow manner?  Or when he shows up to accost his girlfriend (who's dating the scientist already) and grabs her in the dark room only to be bitten on the hand and throw a whiny fit?  God this movie is amazing in its wretchedness.  There is a companion film which uses all of the same sets and "special" effects which I also own.  It's called War of the Planets.  Original.  Because all of the actors wear red skullcaps, my girlfriend refers to it as "The Penis Hat Movie".  War of the Planets is "The Penis Hat Movie that doesn't have Penis Hats".  I'm serious.  We put them in the dvd player often since neither of us can stay awake more than ten minutes into them, and the audio appears to annoy the hell out of the cat.

I'd forgotten about this movie.  My grandmother picked it up for me at a thrift store a few years back, knowing how much I loved (and still love) bad movies.  Even I wasn't prepared, though, for how mind-bogglingly dull it would be.  Reading about your audience's experience at B-Fest was certainly cathartic after I had been reminded of my own similar pain.

Oh, and my grandmother made it up to me by giving me The Black Hole and the Lost in Space remake afterwards.  :teddyr:

I finally saw this.  I liked War of the Planets and Star Odyssey more.  This movie was slower, and, somehow, harder to follow.  To the director's credit, the fight scenes were actually choreographed, and there was a decent matte painting.  One question: who did the title cards?  They jerked all over the screen!
