I'd think it's more likely the fact that the probe is 33 years old and hasn't had a tune up since birth.
But the idea is both terrifying an exciting. It begs the question of what kind of aliens we're talking here. Nebula M Spacehunter? District 9 blue collar aliens? Perhaps ET?
