Title: Most terrifying/cool/effective looking b-movie monsters.
Post by: Intangible Skeleton on May 16, 2010, 12:41:30 PM
There's always a lot of talk in the b-movie scene about the laughably bad monsters such as Gorillas in diving suits, and gigantic tusked carrots, however there is substantially less talk about where bad movies have succeeded in created repulsive, terrifying, cool, and/or plain effective monsters.

Naturally, we tend to focus on the "bad" aspects of "bad movies", but a movie can still be atrocious overall yet excel in a particular area.

Granted, larger budget movies are able to create more effective creatures such as the Xenomorph from Alien, or the various versions of The Thing from John Carpenter's remake, due to the technical wizardry afforded by money. However, while the b-movie world is populated by fake looking rubber masks and juddering animatronics, there's got to be at least a few gems out there.

I don't know, but this looks pretty cool for a b-movie (at least until the head comes off).

Amost all of Ray Harryhausen's films were B-movies but he created some of the most effective monsters ever - the Ymir is a personal favorite!

THE MONSTER OF PIEDRAS BLANCAS was definitely a ultra-low budget horror, but the title creature loked great - sorta like, to quote Michael Weldon, the Creature from the Black Lagoon's scarier cousin.

Most of monster designer Paul Blaisdell's creatures were slightly goofy-lookin' at best, but his alien for IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE is pretty effective:

Here's a nice tribute to Blaisdell, with photos of most of his critters:

Hey personally I also like Paul Blaisdell's monsters too. Hell I even like Robot Monster, the Giant Claw and the Brain From Planet Arous...at least the aliens looked truly otherwordly and/or downright bizarre back in the old days of B-movies...now they almost always look like they stepped out of a video game.

The original "Creature from the black lagoon" always looked great due to the fact you saw no human eyes or mouth even in closeups.

The white eyed godzilla in "GOdzilla, mothra and king gidorah" was the only scary looking godzilla I ever saw.

Not a monster, but I liked the robot suits in A.P.E.X.

I'm sure it has something to do with growing up watching things like the Sinbad movies, but stop-motion monsters have always creeped me out. I know they're corny and kids today would think I'm a complete moron, but there's something about stop-motion monsters, something that's kind of off about them, that made them terrifying to me as a child. I'm not terrified now, of course, but they still carry a surreal, nightmarish feeling for me.

I've always found the stop-motion effect to be slightly unsettling, in a good way, of course. I agree, it's because there is something slightly unnatural about the movements. Now that I think about it, the effect is not unlike some of the digital tricks applied in a more exaggerated form to ghosts and monsters in movies today. Disturbingly unnatural movement has been one of the most used staples of horror movies since at least the late 90s, and the old stop-motion monsters had it as a natural byproduct.

I will get a picture later.  The monster (if you can call it a monster) was the vine that covered the temple in the movie the Ruins.  This thing was scary.  It could mimic sounds and seemed to have an intelligence about it (the scene where it loured the two females into the dark room with the sound of the cell phone).  Simple but very effective.

Later,

John

At one time this was considerd too scary to show on TV in some parts of america:

The again when they made "the thing" in the 50's the monster makeup was considered so scary they needed to minimize it's exposure.

In some ways, tho, the faceless formless motion of the blob was also very terrifying.

I was presently surprised with one B movie I watched a while back...can't remember the name, something along the lines of "the brain that wouldn't die" or something like that...anyways scientist kills his g/f in a car accident and takes her severed head back to his lab to try revive it. All the while there's some other "experiment" behind a huge door...they built this up pretty well and when the thing behind the door burst out it was pretty bad ass!! (update: found a pic of him :D ) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mpjbXhcFrIA/SgCf3qD-7uI/AAAAAAAACDU/V-Do4NuTXLk/s400/The%2BBrain%2BThat%2BWouldn%27t%2BDie5.jpg) also considering this was from the very early 60's, it was pretty crazy to see this much gore...relatively speaking (http://janusmuseum.org/panabasis/brain02.jpg)

This thing from "the manster" was pretty creepy too (http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/7552/pdvd548.png)

This guy from Dead Alive/Brain Dead:

Too bad he just kinda disappeared from the movie after his reveal (possibly 'cuz he would have been a pain to "bring to life" without blowing the budget).

Also, possesed Ed from Evil Dead 2

Not the best photo of this guy, but I absolutely love this creature.

What's the movie where there's the pinkish tentacled creatures (look kind of like brains or something)you don't see much of that comes out of a local mine to terrorize the locals?  The family dog of the main characters gets killed.  I think towards the end they use dynamite to blow them up in the cave/mine they came from.  I'm pretty sure it got reviewed here, but a scan of the titles didn't ring a bell.

I remember thinking their design, what you see of it, was pretty cool.  Little help?

No review here, it seems. BTW the art depicts green skeletal hands, the actual monsters had tentacles with claws on them.

I'd say the blob is one. Contrary to rob zombie's remarks, there's something uniquely terrifying about a mass that has no apparent senses yet can detect you and no apparent means of locomotion but can move towards you and so apparent weapons yet consumes you utterly alive, leaving no trace.

Absolutely. It takes the "blank slate" approach to killers one step further. You can't relate to the Blob at all. You can't reason with it. It has no real intelligence, no specific form, and it just engulfs and dissolves people. It takes all the best monster and serial killer tricks and adds almost a disease analogy, hitting one more of our fear buttons.

Yeah, that's it!  I looked and couldn't find any good pictures.  Probably you never see it clearly.  I just remember thinking what you did see was pretty good.
