Title: The Phantom on Scy-Fy
Post by: Hammock Rider on June 21, 2010, 03:41:09 PM
Is that how they spell it now? ANYWAY, I'm a casual fan of the Phantom in that I've enjoyed the '43 serial and the '96 movie versions of his adventures as well as some fo the newer comics by Moonstone so I watched this on and off over the weekend and I have to say, not too impressed.

I don't mind when someone updates a character, that can have a rejuvinating effect. But this version changes too much and leaves out some of the things that I really liked. I didn't sit through the mini in its entirety but I don't remember seeing the Phantom's dog, Devil, or his horse, Hero. They were practically sidekicks in the older stories! And they changed his suit. If you want to give the Phatom kevlar body armor and a neuro-link whatits to enhance his strength, I guess that's fine, but they didn't even keep a trace of purple in the new costume! The new costume really looked like a de-Batted-Batsuit if you know what I mean. As a matter of fact they "Nolanized" the Phatom just a little too well.

I realize the mini was probably just testing the waters for a possible series, which could include more interesting developments, but if they want to make that series successful they should have kept some more of the standard elements.

I hate to sound like a grumpy old fanboy, but if they didn't want to hang on to important elements of the character they should have just created a brand new character. I think this is just another case of trying to ca$h in on an established "brand" ala Karate Kid and all the rest.

That's SyFy,  and this looks about as stupid as that Flash Gordon series they ran a couple of years ago.  They show the original suit  in a trailer saw.

The costume he wears in the show is terrible looking and really puts me off, I doubt I ever watch it.
