Title: Scenes you had to rewind and watch several times
Post by: AndyC on June 30, 2010, 08:11:13 AM
This was mentioned in another thread, regarding a classic moment from Dirty Harry.

Seeing that on video years ago, my friend and I just had to watch it four or five times. We laughed until we ached.

Another one for me was a scene from The Last Man Standing. John Smith pulls the guns out for the first time and blasts a guy right out into the street, shooting up the whole office before he stops tumbling. Too cool to watch just once.

So, what scenes have you guys rewound and watched repeatedly. Could be because they were funny, cool, too chaotic to make sense of, or just made you say "WTF?"

lol...

In the movie: The Rats are comming! The werewolves are here! (Still one of the most coolest movie titles I have seen) There was some odd closeups that needed to be review a few times.

Within 10 mins or so into the film you have some people talking and some random chickens would be flying from the background. It doesnt say way there are random chickens flying around until much later in the film but its funny to watch the actors being so serious and then a random chicken would fly overhead.

Then there was an odd closeup of the girls sowing they were so close together you'd swear somebody might get their eye poped out... (Please note... this scene could of been in another Andy Milligan film... his films are so similar to each other)

In Terminator 3 where that big crane truck went flipping end over end.  That was cool!

It's on here at about 6:40.

Any scene of extreme, gratuitous gore that looks well-executed or maybe to see where I can find goofs that my eye might have caught for a split-second.

The scene from Top Secret! that was filmed entirely backwards with one single panning shot. Brilliant. I watched it many times to get a feel on how they choreographed ti.

I think it was Bloody Moon - In the beginning of the movie, one of the girls was wearing a Grace Jones t-shirt and I had to rewind it several times and zoom in to prove it to someone.

This scene from KILL BILL VOL 2 (don't look if you haven't seen it - and it may not be work safe):

The mirror scene in Deep Red. I also noticed a Swans poster in Road Trip. It's pretty easy to miss.

AndyC, Not to be a wet blanket but Bruce Willis manages to get about 15 shots each from those 8-shot .45s.

Also, if that dude had been blown back 30 feet, then so would Brucie boy.  :bouncegiggle: Pesky old Newton.

The scene in All The President's Men where Robert Redford thinks he's being tailed ~ I think they call that a tracking zoom shot. Also the Library of Congress scene where the camera goes right up to the ceiling.

The death scene in The Recruit at the end of the film.

The scene in Shangani Patrol where the survivors are massacred.  :buggedout:

Oh great. Another WyreWizard.

I know it's wildly exaggerated. So did the filmmakers. It's called artistic licence. What matters is it looks cool and establishes him as a badass. If you can't watch it without counting the bullets and thinking about the physics, I really do feel sorry for you. But attacking other people's willful suspension of disbelief in order to show off how "smart" you are, well, that's just rude. Trust me, it does not impress anyone.

Now, do you have something to contribute to this thread?

AndyC, Sorry, I certainly was not trying to insult you or anyone. I liked.a Last Man Standing. That's why I put the silly laughing emoticon in, it was meant in humor. I have fun going back and separating fantasy from reality, but it doesn't decrease my enjoyment of movies one bit. I make my living by the scientific method, it's second nature.

OK, maybe I reacted a bit too quickly. Sorry about that.

No problem. I understand the movie business is all about illusion, but some of the illusions have been accepted into the public's mind as "realistic", just because we've seen them a million times on screen. Most times I don't notice them either, unless they draw attention for some reason.

There's been unrealistic gunplay in movies for as long as there's been movies.

Clips I had to watch over again  - La Lusienne scene in Inglourious Basterds; for one thing it's awesome, for another it's really really hard to determine who shoots who at the end.

The Limey - While Fonda's character is talking at the party, Wilson, in the background, casually tosses a guard over the edge of the deck.  One of those "did he really just do that?" moments.

There's a bit in We Are Going To Eat You where a main bad guy who the heroes have been fighting slips on a roller skate and lands face first on a weapon on the ground, instantly killing him.  My friend I saw the movie with were so shocked and amused we watched it a couple times.

The chainsaw duel from Tiger on Beat is another one.  The entire sequence is a near flawless combination of frenetic editing, brilliant choreography and stunt work, well-chosen angles and good action composition, even a great usage of rhythmic pulsing (look at the sounds in a wave form editor and you'll see what I mean) and light with multiple rising and falling actions and careful usage of miniclimaxes to raise tension and excitement.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8_dY4rpjOc

It's too bad the entire film isn't quite as well-made.

Another one is the sequence from Ip Man where he beats the crap out of 10 Japanese students.  The savagery, skill and choreography on display are really good, but the emotional intensity is probably the best part.  I might warn you, if you're sensitive to dislocations and bone injury you might not want to watch the clip.

The scene in Friday The 13th Part III, where a guy has his head crushed by Jason and his eyeball comes shooting out at the camera.  The special effects were downright awful and goofy, it was funny each time I rewound and watched it again.

This might not count, since the movie was a compilation of clips, but watching It Came From Hollywood back in the 80s, there were two bits we had to watch over a few times.

Andy, here's the whole number. It's Al Jolson in the film WONDER BAR singing that uplifting number Goin' to Heaven on a Mule.

It's hard to believe this was considered acceptable entertainment even in 1934.

That IT CAME FROM HOLLYWOOD reminded me of another great musical number, Turn On the Heat from SUNNY SIDE (1929).

Again, here's the complete, unedited sequence:

The scenes in "Lair of the White Worm," where the villainess Lady Sylvia Marsh (Amanda Donohoe) seduces the virginal boy scout (Chirs Pitt.) So she can use him as a sacrifice to her god Dionin. Prime wanking material that. Especially if you put yourself in the role of the boy scout.

The eyeball popping scene from Evil Dead 2.
(I think we re-wound and re-watched that scene like 3 times the first time we saw it)

Ozzymandias speaks: WONDER BAR is full of un-PC humor. The movie was a flop and hurt Jolsen's career, but the un-PC stuff may not have been a factor then. It has become a cult favorite because of the jaw dropping un-PC stuff that happens.

The thing I remember watching over and over was an early episode of Dark Shadows. Maggie's father was painting Barnabas's portrait. He stops and looks upset. Barnabas ask why he stopped and it sounds like he says, "I've f***ed it up." I know those went out live so the actor may have accidently said that.

Ozzymandias has spoken!!!

I was at a party once when we saw "the evil dead" part one (when they actually thought they were making a real scary movie  :twirl:).  The tree rape scene recieved several rewinds to first make sure if we actually saw that right then just to enjoy the pure quality of the cinematography
