Title: ZOMBIES OF MASS DESTRUCTION (2009)
Post by: indianasmith on July 10, 2010, 11:21:15 PM
Part of the 8 FILMS TO DIE FOR series,  I found myself alternately laughing or groaning during this film.

Basic plotline: Port Gamble is a typical small American seacoast town, with a long-term incumbent mayor preparing to run for re-election and a spunky, freethinking schoolteacher preparing to challenge him.  There is a redneck family whose son, Bryan, has a crush on Frida, the Iranian-American hottie whose dad runs the local diner, and two homosexuals, Tom and Lance, who are visiting from New York so that Tom can finally "come out" in front of his mother.
In the midst of this idyllic summer, a zombie outbreak occurs, and pretty soon half the town is chomping on the other half's intestines.  The government blames the outbreak on a virus released by Islamic terrorists, the rednecks try to interrogate Frida to see if she is responsible, Tom's mom turns into a flesh-chomping walking corpse, and the two homosexuals wind up taking refuge inside the local church on bingo night.  The pastor is a typical grotesque Hollywood charicature of what real preachers are (see my previous rant under the movie CARNY for what I think of Hollywood's portrayal of the clergy).

There are some genuinely funny moments in this film (for crying out loud, NEVER tell a child "Nothing bad is going to happen to you!" in the middle of a zombie outbreak!!!), but it is SO politically slanted that for me, as a Republican and a Christian, it amounted to an hour and a half long kick in the nads.  I mean, I can take a little self-deprecating humor, but this movie REALLY laid it on with a trowel!!!!

That being said, you could probably call this an American knock-off of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, and a pretty fair one at that.  I really don't care for gay-themed movies, but even I will admit that the two homosexual characters had some of the best lines in the whole film!  And the redneck family was so goofy they have to be seen to be believed.

So, all in all, this movie doesn't have many real scares, but it does have a good many laughs.  I guess it was worth the 99 cents I paid to rent it.

I saw this listing on the NetFlix streaming option.  I might have to check it out.  I will put my political and religious beliefs aside.  Some movies are just meant to be enjoyed and laughed at.

Thanks for the quick synopsis.

Later,
