Title: Annoying Stereotypes
Post by: diamondwaspvenom on July 19, 2010, 09:54:15 AM
There's tons of 'em out there, but what particular ones can you personnally not stand?

With me, there are two:

Firstly (and not surprisingly) are the endless stereotypes of Heavy Metal. I'm sick of constantley hearing people say that it's "Satan's Music", that it takes no talent to play (any one who's tried to learn a Death Metal song knows how idiotic that statement is),
that it's all just screaming with fast guitars (that one really p**ses me off) and most of all: that all bands work for the devil and are trying to brainwash society (again, complete and utter BS).

Secondly, as a religious person, I'm annoyed with every stereotype and false accusation on the Christian religion. I've heard just about everything: that the church only exists to brainwash people, that every christian is an intolerant and condemning a-hole, that all priests are pedophiles, the list goes on. Most of these accusations are from athiests and sometimes followers of a certain pagan sector. Clearly they think just because one group is like this or one person commited a terrible act that all christians are like this. Again, a total load of crap.

So which stereotypes annoy you the most?

That all Polish people are dumb.    I find it odd how how you can't tell a joke about a black, Chinese or Jewish person without getting a "racist" label thrown at you but everyone can enjoy a good Polish joke.

I mean don't get me wrong, I've had a few relatives that are true "Pollocks".  That and at least the Polish can laugh at the jokes but honestly, if we can take the joke the rest of the ethnicities should too about their stereotypes.

The Irish are the same, my friend. Nobody cares about Irish stereotypes, or joking about them. Truth be told, most Irish don't care much about the stereotypes, and are quite comfortable making fun of themselves and everyone else, preferrably over a drink.

Speaking as someone with ADHD & Aspergers', I am just plain sick of being portrayed as someone who walks around with their head down, twiddling his thumbs, & talks like a four year old.

And that mantra, "jobs Americans aren't willing to do" really makes my blood boil.

To many ladies out there...(none of which I'm sure reside on this board btw  :teddyr:)

1.) Not all men are "stupid".
2.) Many men are "good"  for other things beside lifting something heavy.
3.) Men do in fact think of other things besides sex.

Those are the breaks. While the three points you bring up are true, unfortunately it's a case of "the squeaky wheel gets the grease." The men that are stupid, are useful for little more than sperm donor or lifting heavy objects, or think of nothing but sex, also make the most noise, therefore they get the most attention.

One stereotype I hate is 'children in restaurants always misbehave.'

We've had people seated next to us get up and leave, or move tables, when they realized they were next to a FAMILY (when the HELL did that become a Bad Thing (tm) in America?).  It makes me see red that they assume our children are the little hellions they think they are by prejudice.

We've had people come to us and say "we thought about moving, but didn't; just wanted to say your children are very well behaved."

We've also had quite a number of people comment to us how they behave at restaurants, even to the point of giving small trinkets to them as 'reward.'  No, these are not people we know...complete strangers doing something nice to reinforce positive behavior.

But, we still get the snide looks, mostly from older couples/groups who probably have been through it with their own children and now think that gives them license to be uppity.

On the other hand, our children are certainly not like this ALL the time - they CAN be the little hellions people presuppose they will be.  But in those cases, WE tend to leave for two main reasons.  (1) It's OUR JOB to handle it, not to ask everyone else to deal with it, (2) we don't want to reward bad behavior with the fun of eating out.

So, I guess part of what bugs me about this is that not only do some folks presuppose the little ones will misbehave, but they ALSO presuppose that I won't take care of it in a socially appropriate way.

Keep in mind, I'm not talking about 5 star dining establishments here...places like Ruby Tuesday and the like are not really the kind of place where anyone should hold really high expectations to 'atmosphere' anyway.

Oh well, rant off...

Christian stereotypes annoy me.  When people find out I am one, they automatically assume I'm against education, the sciences, hate gays, etc.  When they find out I don't fit any of those stereotypes, I'm a huge hypocrite for picking and choosing which parts of my religion I follow.  Just can't win.

Your experience sounds exactly like ours.  The kids are usually very well behaved.  If they are not, we do our job as parents.  Either the kids start behaving, or if we cannot get the problems under control we leave.  We have also had other people stop by to say how well behaved the children are.

Is there any way to win with religion? If you feel right with your Creator, and you've given up on religion and what others think, and you don't let the judgements of others and the texts of those from thousands of years ago rule your life, you've won.

When you have ADHD, Aspergers' & disgraphia, you're employment options are limited.
It doesn't help much when a predominant group of individuals doesn't want you're kind around.

Thw worst stereotype of myself that I've ever come across is one person's point of view that "you have to be a black person in order to be truly African". That makes me angry ~ I was born on this continent, so were my parents, grand parents and great-grandparents so I am 100% African. If I have to be black in order to be African, then I am black and I am proud.

There are a few heavy metal bands (only a few) that I don't really like, but that kind of music is by and large great to listen to. What irritates the heck out of me is when people tell you that you will go to hell if you listen to metal, rock 'n roll etc: my usual response to that is $#@% you, I listen to what I like.

Odd, I've never heard that one... although it seems that many "good" b-horror films with castles in the 1960's to early 1970's has midgets... so maybe they can do magic...  :buggedout:

Today my sister-in-law took me out to lunch, and shortly after we were seated, a couple came in with their toddler daughter.  I have to admit, I had a moment of regret having had our table switched from in the sun, to a cooler spot in the recesses of the restaurant.  This child was not only quiet as a mouse, but well behaved, even though this was a kind-of high-end restaurant, and not really a place for children.  If she'd been obnoxious, who knows how the parents may have reacted (I've seen parents ignore exceedingly ill-behaved children) but you never know, and patience is a virtue.

Every black person has a big penis.
I highly doubt that, sure there probably are a lot of black persons with a big penis, but not all of them. Black women for example.

(I don't mean anything racist by what I just said, it's just a known stereotype)

Well, speaking as a former servicemember who unfortunately had to see a large number of naked men, especially early on in open showers, most black men do have big penises. Sorry, that's just the way it is. Now, do all of them know how to satisfy a woman? That still comes down to the individual no matter who you are. If it makes you feel inadequate then you're obviously more concerned over your own self-image than your performance.

Didn't mean to make the thread disturbing. 'Twas not my intent. Carry on.

Er.. I didn't say it made me feel 'inadequate'... I just said it wasn't possible. You're telling me every single black person in the world has a big penis, that can't be true. Probably a lot sure, but there must be exceptions. You said it yourself 'most black men'

(Again, no racism intended.)

Those penises you saw: flaccid or erect, Flick?

The reason I ask is the following, taken from the Straight Dope column on the topic:

"Going strictly by the Kinsey data, which still remains one of the most exhaustive studies on penis size to date, the average white male has a penis measuring 6.2 inches long and 3.7 inches around, whereas the average black male has a penis 6.3 by 3.8 inches, for a difference of 0.1 inches--not what you'd call statistically significant. When it came to flaccid length, however, blacks fared a little better: 4.3 inches long, versus 4.0 inches for white males. So it may be,
therefore, that while those of African heritage appear larger initially, under actual working conditions things tend to even out. You should consider this a tentative hypothesis rather than a scientific fact, as there were only 59 black respondents to the survey, versus 2,500 for whites."

My wife and her siblings are second generation Polish Americans (Both sets of Grand parents immigrated to the Chicago area in the early 20th Century).

I am mostly of Scots-Irish descent, with a little English, and Native American thrown in.   Does that mean my kids are Scots-Irish, English, Polish, Native American -Americans ?

My father's family has been here since 1738, can't we just be Americans.
