I want to say he was stuck in some suspended animation, like cryogenically frozen or something--only to wake up in the future and find that there he is the only male on the entire planet, and all of earth's remaining inhabitants are female. There were men in the world, but a lot of the cast were female.

The women live in nature-loving communes, and the newly awoken man (he's about 25-30) causes some strife by breaking the accepted way of things.
