Title: Movies You Simply Can't NOT Watch If They're On
Post by: ChocolateChipCharlie on August 04, 2010, 02:37:37 PM
Hey Folks-

I was thinking the other day that there are a lot of movies, good and bad, that I just can't pass on when I see them on the guide.  No matter how many times I've seen them.  So I thought I would share mine and see if anyone else has the same problem of being irrationally and inexplicably drawn to certain movies.

1. DUNE.  I.  Love.  Watching.  This.  Movie.  It's good in a lot of ways, it's hilariously bad in a lot of ways, and it bugs the hell out of my wife whenever I put it on.  That's all I can ask for.  :)
2. THERE WILL BE BLOOD.  Daniel Day Lewis is hilarious in this movie.
3. THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS.  I like RUSHMORE better but it's not on as often.
4. FLETCH.  Harkens back to a kinder, gentler time.  Also, features Mitchell.
5. FLETCH LIVES.  See above.
6. FARGO.  Just a great movie, and I can't pass on it.  Plus it's on a LOT.
7. VIDEODROME.  The Family Guy episodes with James Woods made this movie even more hilarious.  Cronenberg, you ridiculous man you.
8. SCANNERS.  See above, minus James Woods.
9. SHIVERS, aka THEY CAME FROM WITHIN.  See above.
10. THE THING (1982).  Wilford Brimley.  Nuff said.
11. THE NINTH GATE.  The French chick is cute, Johnny Depp is funny, and I like Europe.  Beyond that, who knows why.
12. ALMOST ANY BOND MOVIE.  As long as there are no commercials.  FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, GOLDFINGER, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, GOLDENEYE, LIVE AND LET DIE, CASINO ROYALE, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, and A VIEW TO A KILL are among my favorites, but for whatever reason I'm a sucker for almost any Connery or Moore BOND movie.

That's a good but not comprehensive list off the top of my head.  What about you?

I can honestly say I probably haven't watched 10 movies on TV in the last 10 years.  I'm pretty much in "DVD or nothing" mode.  However, when I am channel surfing I may stop on an interesting movie for 10 or 15 minutes, but then I move on to something else.  My TV viewing these days is almost exclusively limited to sports and documentary-type programs (I love watching prison shows like LOCKDOWN and LOCKED UP ABROAD).  Almost any movie I would stop to watch on TV is something I have on DVD.  So, if I have the urge to watch it, I just pop in the DVD.

Tremors and The Fly (1986).
I just have to watch them when they're on.

Any war movie will get my undivided attention for at least 10 minutes until I figure out if its good or bad.

I stopped watching TV several years ago and don't miss it. I never liked watching my favorite movies on TV edited, cut or interrupted by commercials. When in the mood for a certain film I pop in the DVD or Blu-ray. Works best for me.

I used to watch The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001), or any of the Lord of the Rings movies whenever I noticed they were on TV.  I've got them on DVD now though, so to heck with commercials and editing to run in the time alloted.  I kind of miss those days though, it was an event - my movie is on!  Now I seem to never watch them, because I can watch them any time, so why do it now?

I still will watch some James Bond movies though.  I've got a set of 5 Bond movies on DVD, but there are quite a few of them that are good but not quite worth buying.

Halloween (1978)
Halloween II
Psycho (1960) (doesn't come on very often though)
Rear Window (Original)

I forgot to mention the Halloweens, those are definitely must-watches as well.  And almost anything by Hitchcock.  THE 39 STEPS, PSYCHO, REAR WINDOW, VERTIGO, SHADOW OF A DOUBT, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, ROPE, and NOTORIOUS are my favorites.  ROPE in particular is fascinating because of the whole-reel takes that Hitch used - you can tell Tarantino got a lot of inspiration for his crazy-long takes (FOUR ROOMS, etc) from that movie.

And I also forgot CRIMINAL LAW.  That movie is like DUNE - it's really good in a lot of ways, and then in some ways it's just hilariously bad.  Those are the movies I like to watch the most, I think - that, or watching renowned actors at their lowest point (Hugh Grant in LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM is a great example there, or Christopher Lee in HOWLING II).  CRIMINAL LAW has Mitchell delivering my all-time favorite quote:  "If there's one thing we can tell you, it's this - a crazy killer is crazy, and he will kill you."   :bouncegiggle:

(I know that Mitchell's name is Joe Don Baker, and that it's sort of misleading to refer to him as Mitchell in non-Mitchell movies, but I just can't help it.  Oh, my, my, my Mitchell.....)

Jack - I don't buy BOND movies because they're on TV so much there's no point.  And they generally don't have any bits that get edited out so even if you DVR them off of G2, they're still basically intact.

The Royal Tenenbaums, Seven and Big Lebowski, which is silly because I own them all.

Forbidden Planet
The Time Machine (1960's version)
The Devil and Daniel Webster
Gorgo
Beetlejuice  - just love Michael Keaton in this movie!
Some Like It Hot
The Mummy ( with Boris Karloff)
Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein

I don't have any of these on DVD,  so when they are on tv they are a rare treat!  :teddyr:

Army of Darkness. I own it, but if on the rare occassions I do watch TV I happen to see it in the channel guide, I'll watch at least a few minutes of it.

Care to share with the rest of us? Admittedly, I've never seen the uncut version, just the hacked to s**t TBS version.

Oh man, that's turrble!  You have to rent it or catch it on a movie channel.  There's some pretty good nekkidness, and even more in the DVD "special edition".
