Title: PARASOMNIA (2008)
Post by: indianasmith on August 15, 2010, 01:33:01 PM
This was a really excellent little horror thriller that I rented earlier this week and watched last night.  An employee from a rare rock records store name Danny Sloan goes to visit a friend doing drug rehab at a local clinic.  While there, he sees a psychotic killer named Byron Volpe who is physically restrained and hooded to keep him from using his remarkable hypnotic powers to control others.  In the next room, a beautiful young lady named Laura Baxter lies asleep - a condition in which she has spent most of her life, due to a rare sleep disorder known as parasomnia.  Danny is smitten with her beauty and the rarity of her condition, and repulsed by the  evil and enigmatic Volpe.  He begins visiting her and bringing music for her to listen to, and is pleased when she regains consciousness and smiles at him.  But then he hears that she is being taken to a controversial sleep clinic, where one patient has died under treatment and there are rumors of abuse.  He decides to kidnap her and take her to his apartment, despite Volpe's warning that "She is mine, Clouded man!!"
At first it seems as if things are going to work out well - she responds to his voice and he is very caring and tender in looking after her.  He does not realize that the master mesmerist Volpe can control her through her dreams until he wakes up to her standing over him, covered with blood, and raising a knife over her head . . .

WOW!! This is an all around excellent film, with strong performances by the entire cast and a good supporting role with Jeffrey Combs as an angry, burnt-out police detective.  The kills are gory, the plot twists keep it moving, and Cherilyn Wilson is at once innocent and breathtakingly sexy as the sleeping beauty Laura.

I highly recommend this movie!

Kind of funny... I haven't seen it but a reviewer just published a review on my site.  She gave it the lowest rating ("Beware") and started her review with, "Sweet Mother of Pearl, this is a bad, bad movie...."  She found it unrealistic and found the main character extremely creepy (in a bad way---like a stalker).

If I had GOOD taste in movies, I wouldn't be a Frightening Fanatic of Horrible Cinema, now would I?

I thought the main character straddled the fine line between infatuation and creepiness. He did not take the the girl for cheap thrills, but because the clinic they were taking her to apparently had a VERY sinister reputation.  Also, he did not do anything untoward - even when he bathed her after she went rolling in the grass (she had not been outside, I guess, in years and years), he didn't take advantage of her as many men might have.
Then again, I guess he might have been biding his time.  The movie worked for me.
