Title: Scariest Video Games You Ever Played
Post by: InformationGeek on October 04, 2010, 09:33:57 PM
It's October, so why not also talk about the scary video games as well?  No need to leave them out!

The scariest games I ever played were Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and most of the Half-Life games.  While there was no constant threat in SH: SM outside of the ice world; the icsolated world where there is basically no one at all, the quiet nature of the town, and not knowing if the world will ice over made for some scary moments.  The final nightmare was the scariest and the freakiest moment.

Half-Life series isn't really made to be a horror game, but there are plenty of horror moments that always kept me on the edge of my seat, like going through Ravenhelm or the underground of City 13 in Half Life 2: Epi 1.  Those damn zombies.

So what about you guys?  What games scared you the most while playing them?

Dead Space  Not only the game itself, but the ending...nuff' said  :buggedout:

Dead Rising being among swarms of zombies and hearing them all groan and grunt. There's a true feeling of being boxed in and nowhere to run as they close in on you.

I got claustrophobia from one of the levels of the old Medal Of Honor games:

Your guy fought in 1st person in a gas mask inside a chemical weapons factory.
The mask fogged up as the guy would breathe, and he mad Darth Vader-like sounds as he was breathing. It really messed with me until I got used to it.

Resident Evil 1 (PS)  When the dogs came crashing thru the window..I think we all suffered from that one!  :bouncegiggle:

Dead Space.  Walking through those hallways, then some scary music cue would play and a horrible necromorph would appear and come after you.  It was like being in the movie Alien.  And Dead Space 2 is coming out at the beginning of January - can't wait

The Video Game "D" Was Pretty Scary

I'm Not Even Sure If They Still Make It , It Used To Be For SEGA SATURN Game Systems

The Plotline Of The Game

A Psychotic Doctor Has Murdered Everyone In His Hospital And Has The Place On Lockdown , Only The Doctor's Daughter Laura Is Let In , The Player Plays The Character Laura And The Object Of The Game Is To Find AND Stop The Bad Guy By Following Various Clues Left Behind (The Ring on the one dead guys hand is actually the key that fits a door etc.) , The Whole Game Is Set Up Like A Haunted House With Pictures That Smile At You As You Pass , Disembodied Voices , Bodies Strewn About In Various Stages Of Rot , Trap Doors , Secret Tunnels , Papers with secret messages And Stuff Like That

.....Like I Said It Used To Be For SEGA SATURN And I'm Not Sure If They Make That Game System Anymore , And I'm Not Sure If They Made It For Any Other Systems

If You Ever Find It It's A Great Game!

Oh man.....you just hit a memory with me. I remember playng this, but don't ever remember beating it.  Sega Saturn had some good games as well outside of the scary stuff.

That 32x system was a horrible idea though ( I should know) and the games they had like Corpse Killer  Tomcat Alley and the digital versions of  the filmsCongo and Cliffhanger even less good.

However, the digitized version of Kamen Rider Zo was neat, and despite no longer having the system, I never parted with my copy of it, as it's a collectors' item now.

The original Clock Tower for the SNES was pretty creepy, though pretty tame violence-wise.  Clock Tower for the Playstation rememdied this, and it was nearly as scary.  The bad voice acting hurt the overall creepiness though.

I seem to remember that title, though vaguely. Was it about a serial killer or something?

And we should also tip our hats to the Castlevania series.  Not truly scary, but a big innovation in the horror market.  But you know what IS scary though? Have you ever played the Fatal Frame series?  Now those were scary, esp. numero uno in the series!

A pair of evil twin brothers attacked a girl at an orphanage.  One was some bloated mutant monster, and the other was known as "Scissorman", who wielded a giant pair of shears to gore his victims with.  Lots of supernatural evil things also happen in the game that can kill you.  That's the Super NES version, anyway.   I think it was Japan-only.

I've always wanted to play Haunting Ground on the PS2 - looks like a cool game.  But a used copy is about twenty bucks.

Cold Fear is a real forgotten gem in my opinion.  It wasn't all that scary overall, but it definitely had its moments.

Clock Tower for Ps1 was really scary when it came out. I never played the SNES one but watced a walkthrough of it.

Clock tower 2 was kinda lame except for how awesome Mr Bates was.

Resident Evil. The part where you get attacked by the Snake I threw my controller to my friend and was like "Forget this, your turn!"

Heh, well my old roomates was in fallout 3. He had a deathly fear of scorpians and in that game there are giant scorpians that are the size of a freaking bus! Needless to say he was a little freaked out when he saw one for the first time.

As for me probably deadspace, that game was more than a little messed up!

very creepy and claustrophobic atmosphere to the whole game. even though generally, I'm not a fan of first-person adventure type games. prefer stuff like Mario Kart!

I haven't played many games lately, but Fatal Frame 2 was really scary!  I didn't get to play the first one, but from what I heard, I don't know if I want to!  I'm ashamed to admit I couldn't finish it.  I got to the end and at first I couldn't finish because I was scared, then because I got too frustrated, and then I let a friend borrow it and never got it back.

The first Resident Evil is one of my favorites!  It scares the poop out of me!  I used to play it with my friend in the room with me and we would scream like 8 year olds it was so stupid.. I got through it several times though.  I absolutely hated the dog hallway!  It scared me even when I knew it was coming!

Silent Hill was really scary, but it was more depressing than scary.  I think it was the 3rd or the 2nd one where the ending was just really sad.. I just gave up on that series.. scary and sad don't belong together in a game if you ask me.

I know it probably wouldn't scare me now, but I remember The 7th Guest (PC) being very creepy when I was younger.

I don't think I could handle Dead Space.. just seeing the commercials scared me.

hmm Im probably getting my 'persons' mixed up. you kind of looked down from above and behind on your character, not 'through their eyes' so to speak...if you've played it you know what I mean :).

@Bull yeah I thought it was pretty good. don't know if there's any newer versions around. playstation 1 is pretty old now I suppose

I've just finished playing Silent Hill 2 and its rather freaky.  I think the prision is the scariest level I ever played.  Stupid soundtrack and invisible enemies in jail cells!

"Alone in the dark" is an ancient arcade / adventure game. It was released in a number of systems, I owned the MS-DOS version (today it's only playable using DOSBox or similar programs). The perspective it uses is similar to those "Resident Evil" games, and the story touches the haunted house and the Lovecraftian horror themes. The graphics are laughable by today's standards, but it really is an incredible and nerve-wrecking game.

If you want to check out some really creepy games play the Penumbra series and Amnesia the Dark Decent.
The games may be low budget and indie but the ideas for them are original and genuinely scare the crap out of you. Dead space is scary, but when you dont have any weapons to give you confidence over a enemy you feel the fear more.

Well, actually there's several games with that title.  The first three were made in the early 90s, and, although their graphics weren't the greatest, the storyline (at least in the first) had a really creepy, Cthulu-inspired theme to it where you play a detective (or a woman) investigating a haunted house.  It was kind of like a prototype for various other survival horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

Then there was Alone In the Dark: The New Nightmare (also called Alone In the Dark 4).  It used a different engine than the other games.  (Never played this one, so I could tell you about it.)

Just to add more confusion the newest games was ALSO called Alone in the Dark (on the PS3 the subtitle Inferno was added.)  Dunno.. never played either, and it looked to me like a case of LGOP (looked good on paper).  I mean, it looks cool, but I've read a lot of negative stuff about it, but heard the PS3 fixes a lot of things, so I dunno.

But the original is definitely worth looking up, if you can get back past the cheesy graphics (characters look a bit like something out of the "Money for Nothing" video).

The zombies in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion are scary, and watching them shamble around the Ayleid ruins, (with the ambient lighting and unearthly dark architectures) evokes a feeling of uneasiness.    Going invisible (and walking up close to the zombies to examine their truly disgusting features) will give you the creeps too.  Not exactly scary in the way most of you have described, but a good chill nonetheless.

I haven't, but I do know a bit about it.  It's creepy and its a fantasticing story, but sadly, from what I hear, the controls are frustrating.  Might ruin the experience, but I say give it a shot.

PS2 emulators are still very green. I keep hearing good things about PCSX2, but I've tried it a few times and got speeds so low I couldn't call any game playable. I have a high-end computer, so maybe it was the emu configuration.

Anyway, I wouldn't bother about PS2 emulators now. Maybe in a few years, but not now.

I couldn't even get the PS1 emulator I tried to work.  Course, that was a few years back.  I'd been wanting to play Parasite Eve (which looked like an awesome game.)

Then, weeks later, someone sent me a link to a "preconfigured" version of Silent Hill, which all you had to do is hit the executable file, choose a few basic options and then, viola!  The game ran on your PC!

Guessing whoever made the program just took a regular emulator and built something around it to take care of some of the more cumbersome config options automatically, so a guy like me could just go, "Oh, yeah, Full Screen, that's cool!"   :twirl:

The scariest game I've played was the original Resident Evil, back when it was still new.  I hadn't seen anything like that game before, oh, and me and my friends insisted on playing it late at night when we were in the house alone.

Another game I really have to give some props to is Eternal Darkness.  That game messes with your head like nothing else.

I got a fairly creepy vibe from Another World/Out Of This World.  Just a bleak, alien world full of creatures looking to kill you.  Bladed leeches, Saarlac pits, bloodthirsty beasts and trigger-happy aliens everywhere you turn.

I agree. And the poligonal graphics only make it seem more otherworldly.

For those who don't know it, it was a hit in the early 90s. The sequel, "Flashback", is even better.

Well, there's also Heart Of The Alien for the Sega CD, which a lot of people slammed (and OOTW creator Eric Chahi wasn't pleased with it) but I enjoyed it.  The movements are more clunky when playing as the alien, but I thought it was even creepier with a bit of added gore thrown in.

Anyone ever play Fatal Frame? That was a good dose of scares, as you went around capturing ghosts with this "ecto-camera" in an old Japanese castle.

Also, the original Onimusha which I have for my '360 (backwards compatible) has a few good moments of scare value.

Lastly, Bioshock seems to have it's effect on me: watching the Big Daddy's lumbering along, making those weird biological-type sounds,  freaks me out a bit. The rumbling of the controller does it's part to help the feeling too.  They're pretty scary  :buggedout:

Oh, man, who didn't freak out when that bear thing first appeared?

Funny story, I remember I died twice not realizing the game had actually started.  I figured there'd be a HUD or something pop up to let me know I could move the guy, nope!

When I was ten years old, one of my favourite computer games to play was "Carnivores 2". Despite enjoying the game, it also used to scare the crap outta me.

The premise isn't scary, basically you just go around hunting dinosaurs. Seems cool, right? I mean, you get to kill tyrannosaurs for cryin' out loud.

There were a few elements to this game that always managed to frighten me. For one thing, this game has no soundtrack. The only thing you hear is the wind blowing, the trees rustling, birds/pterosaurs squaking, little dinosaurs puttering around and so on. If I've learned anything, a situation that lacks in music can be a very tense one.

Whenever the creature would sense your presence, one of two things would happen:

1) If you were hunting herbivores (i.e. stegosaurus, ankylosaurus, etc), they'd run away.

2) If it was a carnivore (i.e. Allosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Ceratosaurus, etc), they would growl and then charge at you.

At age ten, the sound of the predator's fast paced, booming footsteps used to freak me out. Especially the tyrannosaur's. What'd be worse was when the map said it was behind me and I wouldn't notice until a big, gaping toothed maw popped up in front of me.

Man....this thread really brought back memories.
