Title: The Uninvited Guest (El Habitante Incierto) (2006)

spanish trailer

This is one of the most insane, nerve racking movies I've ever seen. It's got an ingenius concept. You wonder why no one thought of it before:

An architect breaks up with his girlfriend and she moves out. A guy comes by and asks to use his telephone, they still have those in Spain I guess and he's like fine and leaves the guy alone to make the call. He doesn't see the guy leave and from the point on is convinced the guy is in the house and it takes over his life.  He finds clues that the guy is still there. He borrows a neighbors dog to try and sniff him out, he calls the police over. Is he paranoid or is the guy really there?

The movie takes twists and turns I did not at all expect. Some people may find it too weird or just completley unfathomable that a guy would put himself through this but I didn't care and was utterly riveted. it does get a shade ridiculous in places and I didn't quite understand the ending. still

5/5

Sounds like my kind of movie. Added it to my queue.

So I just watched this tonight. I honestly don't remember how it got into my queue. Perhaps from your recommendation? I don't remember.

Anyway, I enjoyed it. I gave it 4 stars, although 3.5 would be more accurate. The twists and turns the movie took were interesting, and I generally enjoy movies where figuring out what is going on is part of the puzzle. However, I didn't always buy the main character's actions and motivations, which reduced my enjoyment.

**MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW**

There's a certain scene in the movie that is a set-up for the big reveal at the end. Unfortunately, the true identity of the person the main character traps is pretty obvious, robbing the finale of some of its power. I kind of liked that the movie can be explained through non-supernatural means (the reviews on IMDb seem to have it down fairly pat), but I would have enjoyed an existentialist horror more. The build-up to the party scene makes it seem like its taking that route, but then it doesn't.

**END SPOILERS**

All in all, fairly decent. If you like puzzles, check it out, but you may or may not find the solution satisfactory.

I think I was won over by the concept first and I thought the execution was audacious if not entirely believable or easy to follow.

I'm really into stuff like "the Game".  I don't know.
