Title: Apparently, I'm related to Gene Roddenberry....
Post by: Trevor on November 01, 2010, 04:13:06 AM
I've been reading his biography and as many know, he was involved in a horrific air crash in Syria in 1947 in which he was one of the few survivors, managing to rescue people and bring them to safety. According to his biographer, he wrote a letter to a friend who was in Syria at the time saying "I staggered into Damascus with broken ribs and a brown spot on my shorts".  :buggedout:

Jokes aside, that shows the kind of man he was: able to reflect on an awful event and, while not making a joke out of it, at least making light of it.

I'm not related to anybody famous that I know of, but I was born on the day that Alfred Hitchcock died.

Oh, I get it. The brown spot on the shorts is your relation.

Actually I am distantly related to George C. Scott, but it's pretty distant.

I didn't know the crash bit.  That's pretty interesting, actually, thanks for sharing.

I'm a cousin of Rob and Chad Lowe.  If I recall correctly, we share a great or great great grandfather.  His middle name is my family name (hence the H).

                 from Wikipedia:

Roddenberry developed an interest in aeronautical engineering and subsequently obtained a pilot's license. In 1941, he joined the United States Army Air Corps, which in the same year became the United States Army Air Forces. He flew combat missions in the Pacific Theatre with the "Bomber Barons" of the 394th Bomb Squadron, 5th Bombardment Wing of the Thirteenth Air Force and on August 2, 1943, Roddenberry was piloting a B-17E Flying Fortress named the "Yankee Doodle", from Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides when mechanical failure caused it to crash on take-off. In total, he flew eighty-nine missions for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal before leaving what was then known as the Army Air Forces in 1945.[3][4][5] After the military, Roddenberry worked as a commercial pilot for Pan American World Airways (Pan Am). He received a Civil Aeronautics commendation for his rescue efforts following a June 1947 crash in the Syrian desert while on a flight to Istanbul from Karachi.

Wow.  He was an interesting guy. I guess he also worked as an L.A. police officer for about 7 years.
