Title: The Swimmer (1968)
Post by: lester1/2jr on November 13, 2010, 03:32:20 PM
I guess not for all tastes but this one blew me away. Burt Lancaster is a Playboy type dude who one day decides he is going to "swim home", that is he is going to swim the full length of all the pools from where he starts out, which is his friends house, down to his own house. There are like a half dozen pools or something. The people aren't quite swingers but they have that Mad Men, Viva, suburban set attitude and everyone in every scene is drinking and all the woman pretty much proposition the guy or vice versa. They are all either in swimsuits or what look like golf clothes. As the journey goes on it gets weirder and ends up being surprisingly deep, no pun intended, and not a little dark.

unique and impressive 5/5

I haven't seen it but I have a feeling it's going to make my "weird" list.

It's based on John Cheever's most famous short story, by the way.

Essentially a character study, with an unexpected ending.  Things are not what they seem at all.  BURT LANCASTER always does a good job.

When I was in 7th or 8th grade one of my teachers said this was the worst movie he ever saw.  As soon as he said that I immediately wanted to see it because I had a feeling it was a good movie and my teacher just didn't like it because it wasn't mainstream.  I still haven't seen it though . . .
