Title: December @ 366 Weird Movies: Weirdest of 2010, PEACOCK, AFTER.LIFE, and more!
Post by: Rev. Powell on December 10, 2010, 08:09:33 PM
Looking for a stocking stuffer for the weirdo on your Xmas list?  Try one of the following:

ALL MY FRIENDS ARE FUNERAL SINGERS (2010) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-all-my-friends-are-funeral-singers-2010): "...a hodgepodge of drama, comedy, and a pinch of suspense, all intermingled with the worldly twang of Califone’s score."-EG

BIG MONEY RUSTLAS (2010) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-big-money-rustlas-2010): "...ambles its way onto the screen with all the charm of a syphilitic cowpoke and all comedy value of Eminem doing a vaudeville routine."

DON'T LOOK BACK [NE TE RETOURNE PAS] (2009): "Don’t Look Back mines the psychological terrain of jamais vu: the strange feeling you get when you enter a room you’ve been in hundreds of times and everything suddenly looks different, or when you look at the face of the person you’ve slept next to for a decade and see a stranger."

Title: Re: December @ 366 Weird Movies: BLACK SWAN, GENTLEMEN BRONCOS, ANTICHRIST, more
Post by: Rev. Powell on December 17, 2010, 03:41:20 PM
More... this month we're focusing on 2010 releases (both theatrical and DVD)...

BLACK SWAN (2010) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-black-swan-2010): "Darren Aronofsky has found a way to combine the considerable and versatile talents he exhibited in his preceding films into one near-perfect thriller that’s both unsettling and emotionally gripping.  He infuses his new feature with all the depravity of Requiem for a Dream, the visceral surrealism of Pi, the visual splendor of The Fountain, and the grounded character of The Wrestler, while of course adding some beautiful dance sequences and a sapphic fantasy."-AK

GENTLEMAN BRONCOS (2009) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-gentlemen-broncos-2009): "You may want to take a flyer on this uneven but sporadically hilarious spoof of sci-fi nerdom... the beyond-offbeat tone is sure to alienate many, but if you can connect with it you may come away with a peculiar affection for this messy film, the kind of devotion an owner gives a particularly ugly dog."

ANITCHRIST (2009) (http://366weirdmovies.com/72-antichrist-2009): "The irrational horror of von Trier’s vision is only magnified by the sense that you aren’t so much watching a story of madness as watching a director going insane in real time, before your very eyes."

Title: Re: December @ 366 Weird Movies: ENTER THE VOID, HELLZAPOPPIN, and a contest

HELLZAPOPPIN' (1941) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-hellzapoppin-1941): "Made at the height of Hollywood classicism, Hellzapoppin’ breaks every rule of conventional filmmaking, then makes up a few more so it can break them, too."-AS

ENTER THE VOID (2009) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-enter-the-void-2009): "...an exploitation piece masquerading as an art installation, eye-candy masquerading as mind-candy; it has all the reckless visionary enthusiasm and delightful pretension of a Ken Russell picture."

VALHALLA RISING (2010) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-valhalla-rising-2009): "Nicolas Winding Refn appears to be trying to answer the question 'what happens when you make a religious allegory, but leave out the allegory part?'"

WIN A DOWNLOAD OF "THE GRANDFATHER" (http://366weirdmovies.com/christmas-contest-win-a-copy-of-the-grandfather): The Grandfather is 40 minutes of spine-tingling audio horror from Tales Beyond the Pale (“radio plays for the digital age”), written by Graham Reznick (I Can See You) and starring horror icon Angus Scrimm (Phantasm).  Based on that description and the cover art, make up a 1-2 sentence plot description and post it in the comments section.  The best entry will get a code good for a free download of the mp3 file.

2010 closeout!  All reviews must go before next year's models arrive!

ELVIS (1979) & THIS IS ELVIS (1981) (http://366weirdmovies.com/elvis-1979-this-is-elvis-1981): "[Kurt] Russell’s electric arrogance is hypnotic and, given the epic subject, that is a remarkable feat. If only the screenplay was as good."-AE

AFTER.LIFE (2009) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-after-life-2009): "From the promotional materials I have seen, the producers clearly hoped that the presence of a wonderfully naked Christina Ricci would be enough to make me pay ten bucks to fill a seat—which it sure as hell was, the fact that After.Life turned out to be a gem being a bonus."-PD

TO DIE FOR TANO (1997) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-to-die-for-tano-tano-da-morire-1997): "A musical production telling the life story of a contemptible macho bully in styles ranging from disco to “gangsta” rap would be strange enough, but director Roberta Torre adds in bizarre dream sequences involving dancing chickens and every 1970s LSD drug trip camera effect she can afford, and films the entire mess as if she’s the long-lost love child of Maya Deren and George Kuchar."

PEACOCK (2010) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-peacock-2010): "...by the end, it’s clear that Peacock is just an anemic rehash of Psycho's less plausible parts, with plot holes deep nough to bury a body."-AS\

TOP TEN WEIRD FILMS OF 2010 (http://366weirdmovies.com/top-10-weird-movies-of-2010): Mega Piranha is #10, and a movie no one's seen yet is #2 (on the basis of its trailer).  Click to see the rest of the list.
