Title: Films that Knocked Your Socks Off
Post by: RCMerchant on December 18, 2010, 04:35:24 PM
Kinda response to the "Overrated" theard. What films really made mark on your psyche? Like-films that made you think-like reading a book that changed your life. When I read THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and TO KILL A  MOCKING BIRD-It made me take account of my feelings...of me. Very few films can do what some books do to me. Call me weird or old fashoined. Books have a bigger influance than film on my way of thinking. BUT-we are talking of movies-and there are some that are personally iconic-that you think are classic. That stay with you-always! Mine-

1.WHITE ZOMBIE (1932) Like a Grimms fairy Tale..notta lotta dialog....doesnt need it-the imagery is haunting.
2.LAWRENCE OF ARABIA-Even though it's landscape is so wide in scope and epic-it still digs into the charecters minds. Great film.
3.TAXI DRIVER
4.ON THE WATER FRONT
5.TWELVE ANGRY MEN
6.2001: A SPACE ODDESY-Pure science ficrion.
7.BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN-Might be one of the best films ever.If you've never seen it-do yerself a favor-change your life,man.
8.FRANKENSTIEN
9.SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
10.The BRAIN THAT WOULDNT DIE-Yeh-This is a personal 'change your life" movie for me. I seen this when I was 12...made me realize that low budget crap was worth watching.

The original Star War series, when I was kid that was amazing.

Nowadays: "Brick", "Elite Squad" and pretty much anything by Shane Meadows. "This Is England" still gives me goosebumps.

It wasnt a movie what done it for me. It was the tv show In Search Of hosted by Leonard Nimoy.  The Bigfoot episode kicked my little redneck ass

Oh thread now has a counterpoint, how fun!   :teddyr:

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: I heard the film was good, but I could never imagine just how good it was.  All the jokes were perfectly timed, the voice acting was superb, the visuals were a treat, and I love to rewatch over and over.  Needs far more love.

Paprika: I randomly grabbed this off the buy shelf at Blockbuster and I was just blown away at this film.  This film to me if the third best film I have ever seen and would gladly watch it over and over again.

Jaws, my all time favorite.  No film has ever been as re watchable as this one for me.  I first saw it when I was really young and I still find it as thrilling as I did years ago.

Back To The Future, actually the whole series but part one oddly always makes me sit on the edge of my seat at the end.  I know how its going to end but I still find it nail bitting.

Jurassic Park.

Just mind blowing and I was the perfect age for it.
I love this film and found the T-Rex sequence one of the most tantalizing bits of cinema of all time.

Theres other but those are the first that come to mind right now.

I will agree fully with Twelve Angry Men. The remake wasn't bad, but the 1950's version with Henry Fonda was amazing. Anybody who has never seen this film should correct that. It is amazingly engaging, and must get points for being so un-boring considering is it entirely driven by dialogue. It has a very tense and claustrophobic feel that hits you immediately.

I know I'll catch flak for this (and I've mentioned it before), and I also know this movie is not widely viewed as "classic" by any means, but ...

I was totally enthralled by STARGATE when I saw it at the theater.  I just thought the story was cool.

Sue me.   :twirl:

On a more serious note, both GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES and PAN'S LABYRINTH were pretty unforgettable.

It did open up some interesting questions.  Would have been nice to see what else was connected on the big screen.  Not that the series sharing the name was terrible but there was a lot of unexplored territory with it.  The concept was a curious one that one can look at and ponder.

An intriguing topic, there’s been many (actually a lot of them were mentioned in the other thread believe it or not). Anyways here goes:

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968): Just recall being stunned and feeling totally taken to an out of this world experience. Also forced me for the first time to look beyond the confines of the cinematic screen.

Solaris  (1968): engrossing science fiction at its very best  studying the potential effect of lost love.

A Christmas Carol (1951): Alistair Sim is brilliant as Ebenezer Scrooge in this classic, the perfect film for Christmas.

Metropolis (1927): I was just astounded by both the awesome FX, the ultra-futuristic imagery and the spellbinding performance of Brigette Helm and a bit of the old mad scientist formula thrown in for good measure.

Nosferatu (1922): Probably the creepiest movie ever made. Nosferatu is a very unsettling and very lonely monstrosity that brings with it only death and suffering.

The Mummy (1932): One of the best monster reveals in history, a great backstory and a terrific suspense build-up to its terrifying climax.

Jaws (1975):  Again the suspense if amped up and the monster delivers. Makes one weary of being out to sea or swimming in the sea.

Psycho (1960): Terrific twist, fantastic suspense, a shocking reveal, makes it so you’re afraid to take a shower...how could you not love it?

The Wolf Man (1941): arguably the most sympathetic of all movie monsters is the cursed Larry Talbot who  is forced to stalk the night as the bloodthirsty Wolf Man!

Attack! (1956):  Arguably the best low-budget war movie I’ve ever seen. There's action, explosions galore, men fighting for their lives on the battlefield and also having to deal with the intense reality that maybe those at the top really do not know what they are doing. Do yourself a favour if you're a fan of war movies and see this one. I suspect you'll be glad you did.

Blade Runner (1982): this movie truly strikes me as poetic, looking at the beauty , preciousness and frailty of life. Also this is a surprisingly spot-on accurate portrayal of the future.

Brazil (1985): Dreamlike escapism from the real world half its time, the other half bogged down in the horrible nightmare that may well be tomorrow if not today.

12 Monkeys (1995): Terrific surprises and time travel intrigue that actually plays by an established set of rules.

Planet of the Apes (1968): Stunning look at humanity through non-human eyes.

The Haunting (1963): One of the scariest films of all time, as ghostly terrifying as it gets IMO.

On the Waterfront (1954): A man struggles for what is right in the face of incredible adversity.

Seconds (1966):  A man wanting a second chance at life discovers the horrible truth about himself and why he made the choices he made. Unforgettable ending.

The Shooting (1967): Grim B-western that’ll keep you on your toes and guessing right up until the end.

Duck Soup (1933): the perfect comedy, this one always leaves me in stitches laughing.

Island of Lost Souls (1933): Exploitative shocker is stunning not only for its pre-code plot but also for its fine performances and memorable dialogue.

The Quatermass Xperiment (1955): Professor Quatermass bursts on the movie scene in this thoughtful and frightening speculative film about an unknown horror from space crashing down to Earth. Actually shares some surprisingly similarities to the equally if not even better The Thing From Another World (1951).

Quatermass and the Pit (1967): Intelligent Sci-Fi Horror hybrids just do not get better than this frightening masterpiece about the potential origin of man’s intelligence.

Nightmare Alley (1947): The film noir looks at the ugly side of the sideshow carnival and the evil potential behind human greed and manipulation.  Only Freaks (1932) perhaps rivals the greatness of this one.

The Maltese Falcon (1941): Perhaps the best film cast in history in the most perfect mystery/film noir.

Soylent Green (1973): a man discovers a horrible truth too late to save an already dead and dying planet.

ANATOMY OF A MURDER - Thrilling to see Jimmy Stewart knowingly use his "Aw Shucks" persona to become an absolute legal shark in this movie. The film is recognized for breaching the subject of rape in the staid '50s, but more subversive than that is Stewart's legal defense of a person who we, as the audience, have no certainty is in the right.

KELLY'S HEROES - You could be forgiven for thinking we modern-day audiences have a lock on cynical caper films. Nope, it's prototype was done way back in 1970.

Let's not even get into the physics of this scene or just how much energy a giant shark like that would have assert to even jump out of the water like that.

Yeah, reminds me of the old Batman movie from 1966, where he fights the shark off with the can of Bat Shark Repellent. Let's see how he does against THIS one!

The first time I watched THE RING, when the ghostly drowned form of Samarra came crawling out of the TV, I just about wet my pants! :buggedout: :buggedout:

Then in JEEPERS CREEPERS, when the two college kids pass by the old church and see the Creep dumping bodies down that shaft . . . and suddenly he looks straight at them!   Those two moments scared me more than any horror films I've seen since!

I was pretty well floored the first time I got to see Enter The Dragon.

At that time in my youth, (being 9 in 1973) I had heard so much about Bruce Lee and had seen some commercials for his movies, but never got to see one until I saw ETD.

Bruce was a phenomenal fighter, and his impact on everything from action movies to MMA (mixed martial arts) is undeniable. Even now when it comes on AMC, I have to do double takes on some of his moves.

Another movie that knocked me out was the Shaw Brothers' Five Deadly Venoms.

It was an excellent who-dunit up to the end, and filled with a classic style of choreography (both hand to hand and weapons) that has yet to be equalled intoday's martial films.

Some may disagree, but imho, the Shaw Brothers made the first true quality films since the death of Bruce Lee.

The Brain from Planet Arous- sometimes, the puppet's string can be HIDDEN!!!
Seven Samurai- I did a scene analysis on the beginning scene (after the marauder scene) to show the heavy contrast between Dark shades and light shades, as well as the sound, even though the sound isn't part of the Mis-en-scene, anyways, This movie gives the plot directly "Is there no God to protect us?!" and gives the rest of the movie a cruise control ride. The Battle scene is the highlight, with the Gray obscuring the fight scene, it keeps you on your toes.

Fiend Without a Face- Just amazing at the level of gruesomeness when the brain creatures or shot, that sound.
Mad Max 2- A very good B Movie
Troll 2- This is the cherry on top, the very best of the very worst movie ever made period
Inception- Do I need to say more, well, mostly the surround sound deep bass sound
Toy Story 3- Made me cry, because even in the hardest of times, the best way to go out is together.
Birth of a Nation- Made me feel offended even more by the KKK, damn bastards! :hatred:
Citizen Kane- Not all "Best of the Best" classics are good to me

Hey, Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior) is an excellent contribution. I have yet to see a member here ever say anything bad about it. It has a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes for a reason. It's a freaking awesome movie.

I'd like to throw in Tombs of The Blind Dead.  Towards the end, there's a scene where a woman stares in horror as the Templars walk thru the castle door single file.

She gasps, then screams in horror, and the Templars all stop on a dime, and turn in her direction, with a very eerie low level red light glowing in the eyes of the one.

The Templars slowly descend upon her, and bite her to death, with a close-up of the blood running out of the jaws of one of them as he bites her forearm.  Very effective.

I remember Pulp Fiction blowing my socks into orbit. It's just so good, it's the movie that got me into movies. Then Tarantino did it again with Kill Bill Vol. 1. I watched them about one or two days apart, and I think they were the first R rated films I ever saw. Although I prefer Vol. 2 now, I remember the first viewing of Kill Bill just being unbelievably awesome, I'd never seen anything else like it.

I'd also include The Evil Dead in here. My zombie-loving friend hated it, but I just loved every second of it. It got me interested in low budget films and horror at the same time. It's one of my favourites. The Dark Knight and Inception were also two films where I walked out thinking "oh my god that was amazing". People seem to pick holes in both of them nowadays, but I just thought they were incredible.

Also, Snatch. When it finished I was just left in a strange state of Keanu Reeves-esque "woah"ness. I'm not sure if it knocked my socks off as such, but definitely at least my shoes.

I've got to put in another plug for 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.

I'm pretty sure I had seen it before, but when I was 18, alone and in the hospital, I watched 2001.  Around 7 am the next morning, I flatlined for some period of time.

Looking back with the awareness that 2001 would have been the last movie I ever watched seems...poetic.  The fact that I did not die makes it doubly so.

THE THING (1981) has blown me away since the first viewing and continues to do so.  The paranoid mood just resonates with me.

Eyes Wide Shut - who'da thunk a Cruise/Kidman movie would be this great?
The Tenant - Polanski outdoes himself, possibly beating Repulsion.
Burial Ground: The Nights Of Terror - only saw this recently, and ho-lee s**t!! The whole time I was watching I was like "can this get any more awesome?" and it DID. :)
Black Christmas - rented this on VHS many years ago( before it became the phenomenon that it is today), having no clue about the film beforehand, that final phone call...BRRRR!
Rituals - amazing low key Canadain survivalist horror. Code Red: GET OFF YOUR ASS AND GET THIS OUT ON DVD BEFORE YOU PACK IT IN!
Sole Survivor - Excellent. This one was always leering at me from the video shelves when I was younger, but I avoided it because of it's sorta sci-fi looking artwork. Big mistake.
Deep Red - Argento's masterwork. Nuff said.
Dawn Of The Dead - just a perfect, perfect horror movie all the way around.

The Right Stuff blew me away. The story alone is awe inspiring, but the presentation was, IMHO, genius. I must have sat threw that 3+ hour long movie at least 5 or 6 times when it was first released. (Good thing I worked at the theater.)

The Vikings is everything anyone could ever want in a Viking movie. It's got everything, action, comedy, romance, brawling, a bit of intrigue, specatacle, Janet Leigh and a one-eyed, half crazed Kirk Douglas. I saw this for the first time on the late show, back when that was the only way you could catch this type of masterpiece, and afterward I scanned the TV Guide at the beginning of every week for years to make sure I caught it the next time it was shown.

Frankenstein Conquers The World blew me away for the brooding, and somewhat surreal atmosphere.  From the minute the opening credits play amidst
the panning view of the lab, Akira Ifukube's superb musical score sets a very atmopsheric and chilling tone. Noone made music like he did.

Also, the way Toho humanized the character, and treated Frankenstein as a living creature, and not one created from the dead. The makeup for The Monster was very good, a nice hybrid look that reminded you a lot of The Monster while being something totally different.

I also was blown away by the fight scenes. The actor playing Frankenstein, Koji Furuhata, took some serious lumps and bumps in just his loincloth to say nothing of being tossed around by Mr. Godzilla himself, Haruo Nakajima!

All in all, Toho went way out of their normal monster realms to bring a unique experience to the screen, and it shows.  **** 1\2  out of 5.

Brazil.  Or, more specifically, the last scene in Brazil.
