Title: Two Movies, Two Extremes . . . .
Post by: indianasmith on December 21, 2010, 01:48:03 AM
I  hit our local Hasting's tonight after my family's early Christmas celebration, and on the recommendation of one of our new members who works there (Hey, Shamrock!) I grabbed DEAR MR. GACY.  But that seemed awfully heavy and dark, so I grabbed a couple of other titles that looked interesting.  One was a sci-fi chase story called HUNTER/PREY, and the other was the infamous MACGRUBER.

HUNTER/PREY opens with the explosion of a space ship carrying a dangerous prisoner.  His guards, all decked out in helmets that make them look like Boba Fett clones,  are pursuing the dangerous alien across the planet's arid surface as he takes them down one at a time, until finally there is one guard left.  About 30 minutes in you get the revelation that the guards are actually an alien race called Sidonians, and the dangerous alien prisoner is, in fact, a human.  I REALLY enjoyed this; very well-acted with some good character development.  It brought to mind some of the classic old sci-fi stories from the fifties.  I highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys science fiction.

MACGRUBER.  Oh my dear Lord, please steal those memories away!  I mean, I have watched movies so bad that I know they destroyed hundreds of my brain cells before (THE BLOOD SHED, anyone?).  But this movie was so awful it consumed all of third grade, three memorized poems, and everything I learned in high school geometry, including all memories of the Pythagorean whatchamacallit.
Do I have to recall it now?  Oh, the horror!  MacGruber is an action hero sporting a ferocious mullet and an incredible potty mouth, desperately trying to foil a criminal mastermind named von c**th (and boy, do they get a LOT of stupid puns out of THAT name). Something about a stolen nuclear warhead and avenging the murder of his bride ten years before.   The plot is lame, the dialogue so bad you wonder what the screenwriters were smoking, and MacGruber himself is one of the most UNLIKEABLE main characters of all time. The supporting cast is not much better. Unless you are looking to do a partial memory wipe, avoid this steaming pile of cinematic excrescence at ALL costs!

I have no desire to see MacGruber. I enjoyed the SNL skit that it was based on, but when I saw it was being made into a movie I immediately lumped it in with the other movies of that ilk that failed miserably like It's Pat and The Lady's Man.

Did you notice that was my nomination for worst movie of 2010? Glad someone else shares the pain.
