Anybody who follows Maynard Keenen of Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer fame with any detail knows that he has become a winemaker over the past decade, and has been a big voice in putting Arizona wine on the map as the new California in the wine world. I am a wine drinker (among other things), and have a bit of a passion for it, and I also appreciate Maynard (not as much as my wife), and have visited his home town of Jerome several times, so I of course had to see his recent documentary, Blood Into Wine.

The film chronicles Maynard’s transformation into winemaker, along with his partner Eric Glomski. The film is very interesting and downright hilarious at times. Just when the film begins to take itself too seriously, it takes little turns into the absurd, like the fake interview with two guys who ask Maynard what it’s like making poison and tell him his wine tastes like p**s.

Maynard has invested everything he has into this venture, and has an intense passion for it, so much so that he has to continue touring with all three of his music projects constantly because he has to. He is broke. The film mentions this a little but it never panders or tries to canonize the man. Eric Glomski, a master winemaker, is also a standout in this film and strikes one as an incredibly interesting fellow. It is suggested that his nose is so developed that when a woman walks into the room he can tell what phase of her cycle she is on.

A very decent film for both wine enthusiasts and fans of Maynard. I liked it, but admit to a small bit of bias. If you like documentaries and have any interest at all in wine or Maynard, you will like it. If not, you will probably be a bit less entertained. And it's streaming on NetFlix!
