Title: NORTHEAST SNOWSTORM!!!
Post by: Allhallowsday on December 27, 2010, 09:42:54 PM
We got SLAMMED in New Jersey with nearly 3 feet of snow, high winds and drifts over 6 feet!!  MF!!!  Neighbors came to the rescue and helped shovel out the driveway (great neighbors!!!)  Then I worked on the side walkway, the back walkway, even the back door could not be opened so I had to shovel about 300 feet...UGH!!  About 6 hours total shoveling.  My favorite... NOTT!!!   My front road hasn't even been plowed yet (just the side by the driveway, so I can get out now should I want or need to!!)

I'd say we got about a bit less than a foot of snow in RI.  I actually did a power shovel last night about this time and was able to get the car out easily this morning.  The ride to work wasn't the worst I've had but it wasn't exactly smooth sailing either.  Right now the wind is blowing about 60 mph drifting this crap up here and there.  I'm actually impressed on how well the road crew where I live cleaned up our street.  Of course it took a call of complaint by my neighbor to fine tune their job.

Sunny and cool in good old Texas today.  Spent a glorious day sifting for arrowheads down here in Bell County.  Supposed to be nearly 70 tomorrow.,

We've been snowed in (Germany) since November with down to minus 15 Celsius, and I love it. Picture book winterwonderland right outside our window.
Nothing beats walking to the bakery at 7:00 in the morning with the sound of crunching snow underneath your boots

It sure looked like NJ got socked with the worst of this one.  We had a lot of wind in DE, but only about 5 inches of very fine snow.  The winds were gusting in the 50s, sustained around 20.  As a result, we ended up with maybe an inch of snow in most places, the rest was stacked in drifts.  Yesterday morning I was removing one of those drifts, which was about a foot deep, from the driveway.  Had to do it twice.

I saw the road crews come through yesterday.  They had a salt truck without a plow, following a road grader that was doing the actual plowing.  The roads are going to be bad around here this morning, with lots of black ice.

We got some decent level snow in Philly.  I was off Friday and Saturday for the holiday, and a manager from my job called me Sunday and said not to bother coming in due to the weather.  Then, yesterday, I had to WALK for a decent hour to get there, worked for about 3 hours, and they said, "Yeah, go home.  Snow means we won't need a lot of people."  Then I fell on the ice coming home.

Fu*king snow.

We got about a foot here in Billerica, Massachusetts.  Luckily, I have a snowblower and was able to clear my driveway in less than 30 minutes!  My parents live in Saugus (about a 20 minute drive from here) and they got about 6 inches more than we did.

I bought a snowblower recently.  Greatest invention in the history of mankind!  I almost feel guilty watching the neighbors with their goofy shovels with the bent handles, slaving away, while I'm just zipping up and down the driveway with little effort at all.  I handle guilt surprisingly well though  :teddyr:

I'll get a snowblower someday, but for now I look at shoveling as an opportunity to get some exercise.  When there is that much snow outside, my options for cardio get reduced to the elliptical, swimming, or shoveling snow.

Same here...shovelling's a good workout, it'll put you away fast if you aren't in good shape for it.

Don't you just love that after-shovelling feeling, where your arms are like steel cables? It's the coolest part!

We were lucky in the regard that we didn't get that much snow in my area of NJ.

However, we  DID get almost 10 inches, but the old "cereal box" rule applied, because the "product may have settled during shipping".  So while it was almost 10 inches, it didn't look like it.

No snow here in Phoenix, AZ, as usual. We are expecting temps to get down to just freezing the next two nights, with highs only in the 40's. Believe it or not, we usually hit freezing at least once every winter.

But we never get snow, because even though we get freezing temps once in a while, if any precipitation comes to the area the temp rises above freezing every time. Snow is a novelty to us in the ol' "Valley of the Sun," so much so that we take day or weekend trips to the mountains to see snow.

I'd seen something on the front pages of a few NJ newspapers that are really slamming NY mayor Michael Bloomberg for his inaction in NYC and lack of explanation for it, like he did a few years back during the summer power outage.  Seems he's got some explaining to do...

I hate snow too!  I don't mind a few inches, but when it looks like you're travelling the Hindu Kush mountain range looking for the Abominable Snowman, then it's time to say, "wait a minute, here."  :buggedout:

As to Bloomberg, I guess it dosen't matter if he's at fault or not.

He's a billionaire and has no worries in the world no matter what happens. Not so for the rest of us little guys and gals...

Shoveled today to help with the slow melt and clear off my back patio, and chip away at the mountain that I'm glad wasn't plowed into my mailbox or front walkway.     But... needed to clear away part of the mountain to allow mail truck easy access to box.   :teddyr:  :bluesad:

Yeah, soreness is part o' the job, that's for sure.  It's compounded by the fact that it's mostly a seasonal activity, and many of us have to get back into shape for it by slowly breaking in, no thaving the luxury of being used to shovelling pre-season.  :buggedout:

Yeah we got around 7 inches back on Wednesday on the 11 (after it was over that was the total) and as usual it wasn't big enough to worry about, but enough to cause some pains shovelling out.   No driveway have I, but the townsfolk on my street usually respect others' parking rights.

And,  our town DOT gets the plows close to the curb when noone is parked there, and gets rid of as much snow as possible, making it easier for us to dig out (but not too easy, mind you.)   I hope this is the last storm for a while, a long while.

One thing I've noticed so far up until today...the snow has been very dry. Up until the storm we have now (Jan. 26) it was like powder.  Today it seems as if there's some measure of dewpoint to it, if that's what causes it.  Right now it just switched over to a rain-snow mix and in general, it's just a big wet mess.  I hope the hell that this is the LAST storm for awhile.

I usually do about an hour at at time when I shovel.  I have a huge grain scoop shovel that's like a mini front end loader if you know how to load it right. I go slower when I shovel, and wind up getting a decent workout in the process.

Shovelling snow with a huge shovel like that, you have to.  It gets me done quicker most times. Regardless, this last round today trashed my body. My shoulders feel like they were hit with a sledgehammer.

The snowplow guy got really ambitious and pushed a huge bank up into my neighbor's front lawn.  Sadly, my garbage cans were in the line of fire and were knocked over.  I'm going to try to dig them out seeing there are dirty diapers in there.  I'd rather get to that before the thaw.

Not jealous at all. No offense but I don't like heat and I could never live in Texas because of the heat. Or any other state without a healthy change of seasons.
Autumn should be gloomy, with a slight chill and winds blowing colorful leaves about. November should be foggy and the soil frozen. Christmas without snow? What an awful thought.
March brings giant icicles dripping in the afternoon sun - a sign of the approaching Spring. My life wouldn't be complete without all that

I cherish the snow, even if it means I have to get up in the morning and shovel our driveway and sidewalk.

My corny ode to winter

I don't mind it in little bits (like around 3 to 6 inches) but this excessive stuff we've had lately has got to go..my body's getting trashed from all of this.  Not to mention having no place to park except on the street. Your neighbors always love you when there's a spot for everyone, but God help you if you get to that last spot before they do in a snowstorm. It's a bunch a' bulls*it.

I was outside with a few of my neighbors today, we were shaving a few inches off the street and levelling it off so that we could park w\o knockin' the bottoms out of our cars (or anyone else's cars for that matter.)   It was around 39 degrees today and the stuff came up off the roads and the curbs nicely. It was a good workout, allowed us to go slower and pace ourselves.

It's almost 1AM Eastern now as I type,  and there's about a quarter inch of snow on all the cars as a result of a small clipper goin' through. I hope February is nicer. It would be nice to get a vacation from shovelling.

And now they're predicting another 14 - 20 inches between tomorrow and Wednesday.  Where do they expect me to put all this blasted snow?

Our high today is predicted to only be 65.

When will this wintery nightmare end?

Oh, Wednesday we're back in the 70s. Never mind.

You sound like my folks down in Florida.  They'd add in some wind-chill and get it down into the upper fifties  :bouncegiggle:

We got a few inches here.  And I got to chip another ice dam off the roof.  It wouldn't be bad if it snowed and stayed cold, but we get a few days here and there where it gets above freezing and that causes all sorts of havoc with melting and re-freezing.

Here in Monmouth county, NJ, we got nothing at all yesterday... North Jersey got lots of ice, but apparently we just missed it... just some mist, warmer temps, fog, melting, and sprinkling of mist.    :teddyr:  I couldn't be happier.

Here-in Michigan-we got HAMMERED! 2 feet of snow-and winds up to 50mph-which made giant snow drifts...cool. I LOVE violent nature! I walkedaround in it! Makes you feel...I dunno...alive!

I misread your post initially as "Mammoth County"...

Side note, still icy and cold.  Something is supposed to hit this weekend though.

Another snowstorm.  I just finished shoveling this wet, heavy, slippin' slidin' sh!t after 3 hours.   :hatred:  I'm hatin' NJ right now.
Eh.  I told everyone to quit their bit*hing.  Don't like it, move. :teddyr:

That's EXACTLY why I moved away from the Philly area.

Hubby is a Scout leader.  They have their annual Klondike Camp this weekend.  They build shelters of tarps and poles, in the snow, and stay from Friday night to Sunday afternoon.  And he wonders why I don't want to become a Scout leader.
