Title: New Year's Resolutions?
Post by: Raffine on December 29, 2010, 04:03:49 PM
It's that time of year again!

Mine: I seriously want to stop smoking.

It's disgusting and smelly, makes me cough at times like an old broad, and is getting right expensive.

Personally I don't believe in New Year's Resolutions. When you're truly ready to quit something, start something, change a behavior, etc., you'll do it. I would be surprised if more than 5% of people who make NY resolutions are actually successful. Why? Because a resolution made for the sake of a once-a-year holiday is just that: an obligatory gesture that means nothing unless the will to follow through is there.

I quit smoking a little over 4 years ago, after 19 years of smoking and several bad attempts at quitting. I quit because I was ready to quit, finally developed the willpower to succeed, and did it cold-turkey. At the time I had considered waiting and making it a NY resolution because it was only a month and a half away, but I realized that I was at an important crossroads where I was very motivated to quit, and if I waited maybe that window would pass.

Damn, I just realized I probably s**t all over the thread. Sorry about that. I hit reply and got carried away.

I drink way too much Pepsi and cola... I know it's bad so I wish to cut down.

I was the same years ago. I only drink bottles water now.
I still drink Pepsi but I buy cans not big bottles. I only wish I had cut down earlier, it was not good for my teeth.

Mine is too register with a doctor which I've never done before. I get kinda nervous and shy about illnesses and things.

I've been married for 14 years and I've had that "ignoring" thing myself.  What I really love, is when you ask them what's the matter, and they go, "nothing."  And the more you ask them, the nastier they get, until it's "NOTHING"S the matter!

It's like they want you to figure it out, and don't care how hard you struggle with it just as long as you figure it out somehow.

It's like a one-sided doctor visit-you can't diagnose the problem unless you get told where it hurts.

I drink way too much Pepsi and cola... I know it's bad so I wish to cut down.

Same, only I drink too much Wawa Diet Lemonade Iced Tea AND Diet Pepsi (as well as other diet drinks.)

And, my other resolution is to try, I said try to be a better person, and a nicer person.  I'll still be an evil Ayleid sorceror-king, but I'll try to be less evil.

I have some Resolutions.  Anyone who's read some of my posts over the past few months knows I have some issues.  I'm gonna attempt to get everything situated as soon as possible.

Nothing like leaving the bar at 2AM, walking home, seeing 5 Wawa's on the way to the house, and stopping in for those random goodness at Wawa...Shorti's, Iced Tea, some Tastykake's.  Eh.  24 hour convenience.

Wow, within walking distance, huh? Talk about true convenience!  Like I said, the Wawa Diet Lemonade Tea is my main squeeze..Nutrasweet is the next-to-last ingredient and the actual sweeteners are apple, pear, and lemon juice.

So if there's a Wawa in your neighborhood, you must be a Jesey boy too.

Well, Philly.  On the way to work alone there's 3.  One every 4 blocks.  Then, once at work, there's two more on either side.  The local bar is across the street from my job.  I limit the Diet Lemonade Tea though.  I drank a lot of them over the summer.

Get rid of the love handles.  They're not completely unsightly but I really don't like them.

I don't normally make resolutions, I just give myself an entire year to complete a simple task.  This year I want to get a wig.  I'm tired of dealing with my hair.

Damn, I just realized I probably s**t all over the thread. Sorry about that. I hit reply and got carried away.

Don't worry, I think it's tradition for someone to pooh-pooh the resolution thread.  You just got it out of the way .

I ALWAYS have a New Year's resolution to lose weight.  I have kept 20 pounds off the past 2 years, but I still would like to lose about another 20.  Might try Weight Watchers this coming new year.

For 2011, I really want to try to be more optimistic about things.  I tend, as the saying goes, to see the glass being half empty instead of half full.  I want to work on being a happier, kinder person.

1. Win the Kumite. Make my opponent shout "matté".
2. Watch a bunch of movies I own, but have never gotten around to watching.
3. Master the ability to move stuff with my mind alone.

yeah, I agree it would be fruitless to announce I was gonna quit on a certain date - but I do want 2010 to be my last year to smoke. Deciding to stop cold turkey and just not picking the thing up again is probably the best way for me, too.

Take the money you'd spend on smokes and put it in a jar every day and when you see the money you are saving (or was spending) you'll quit... worked for me. I quit this year it was about a $200 month expense after the tax hike. Smoke here went from about a $1.30 pk to $5.00 pk in a matter of days... by the way I smoked 30 years and quit cold turkey.

In my opinion the first two weeks are the hardest far as nicotine goes after that it's just breaking the habit of smoking.

That's a great idea. I'm notoriously stingy with my money and that would probably do it for me more all the photos of yeechy lungs and sad dead Yul Brenner ever could.

Black lungs and dead celebrities never worked on me... green bills and dead presidents do it every time. I'm extremely tight with my money. I took the money I saved and got a 24" LED monitor, a large format printer (Canon 9000 Pro), and a Harmony One Universal remote for X-Mas ... add that sh!t up and not buying smokes paid for it.

You know how some great old classic movies get referenced and parodied time and time again in pop culture, but almost no one you talk to has ever seen those movies? I've decided that I don't want to be one of those people anymore. I'm going to put together a list of classics that get brought up again and again and I'm going to sit down and watch them.

The first one on my list: 2001: A Space Odyssey.
