Title: Dawn Treader
Post by: Zapranoth on January 05, 2011, 02:00:15 AM
Arrrrgh.    Why did they have to mess the plot around?  Why green mist?  Why not just take a perfectly good fantasy tale slash Christian allegory and just carry it forward?

2 out of 4.  And I did NOT p**s away the money on the 3D.  So glad I didn't.

Because that's what they do. Still, I quite liked it. It could have been worse

I haven't read any of the books in the series, so I can't say how closely the film mirrors the book, but I quite enjoyed the film as well. The fourth in the series "The Silver Chair" is suppose to be released as a film sometime this year, but what I'm really looking for is the next three after that: "The Horse and His Boy," "The Magician's Nephew," and "The Last Battle." As back in the late '80's and early '90's, the BBC did the first four books as a TV series, which I saw, but not the last three. Which as far as I know have never been  made into a film.

As at least two members of this website have seen the film, I do have a two part question to ask about one of the scenes. Was that a carving knife that Eustace tried to stab Reepicheep with, while on board the ship,  and if so, it then takes on the nature of an in-joke? But was the in-joke accidental or deliberate?

Well, they might do The Magician's Nephew, which is a prequel really, but the other ones don't quite fit in the series. The Last Battle is VERY preachy (in fact, the only book I don't like in the series), and The Horse and His Boy is set in Calormene with a 1001 Nights atmosphere and an adult King Peter et al. I don't see these being made into successful movies.

I don't mean anything inflammatory by this -- but the whole series is a quite translucent allegory, from the first book on.    True, _The Last Battle_ is a final days retelling with a clear go to heaven or go to hell ending...  But I don't see how it wouldn't fit.

Successful?  Probably as successful as the others have been.   I'd think the ferocious and determinedly agnostic would have said no from the first film?

Anyway, please, don't take this as a means of starting some kind of believer/agnostic flamewar, don't want that, y'all are way too nice for that kind of thing.

I think Last Battle would make a great film.

Magician's Nephew is just as translucently biblical (what with Aslan walking around singing the world into existence)...

They may have f**ked with the plotline , but it was still a good movie nonetheless

Well, at least there are plans to film the fourth book in the series "The Silver Chair," which should be released to theaters later this year.

But, if anybody remembers back in the late '80's and early '90's, the BBC did a TV miniseries based on the first four books.

But, what has never been done, as much as I can remember, is to put the last three books: "The Horse and His Boy," "The Last Battle," and "The Magician's Nephew" to film. Thus, that is the three I'm most interested in seeing. And whether we'll see them or not, I guess depends upon how the fourth one does at the box office.
