Title: Karma to the first...
Post by: Rev. Powell on January 24, 2011, 06:41:53 PM
I give karma to the first... person who responds who has ever owned a parrot (or other talking bird).

The winner nominates the next "karma to the first" topic.

Maybe a parkeet doesn't qualify.. but it was capable of coming close to mimicking speech.  It could say "pretty bird" rather clearly.

Counts!  My grandpa had a parakeet he taught to say "pretty bird," so I'd give you karma anyway.

Feel free to keep the thread going by granting karma for some other random quality.

Yup, it was funny because I was wanting to purchase one visiting around the Cherokee village in North Carolina.  I found one when searching along the banks of a river in Tennessee while we were on that summer vacation.

Thanks for the recommendation Mofo.  I was recently watching some westerns and then I ended up watching one that caught me by surprise.  A Man from the Boulevard des Capuchines (which can be seen below.  I would recommend a place to buy but have yet to find a copy for sale with English subtitles.)  It is comedic and rather slapstick but it turns the western on its head as it was made in the Soviet Union and affirms communist ideals.  I kind of enjoyed the conventions as seen through the eyes of a different culture rather then American or Italian.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_NhHhO5HPg (whole movie, with English subtitles)

Sorry to go off topic there thought I would give a bit of perspective on why I asked.

Cuba libres are awesome and forgotten in the modern age.  However, if you get a chance try without the rum it accentuates the spice notes and removes the sweetness.

Perhaps because getting pregnant bears its own karma.

I was leaving it for Paquita (or someone else) to speak up for.

Have to admit, I am looking forward to seeing who claims sympathetic pregnancy!

Are you trying to claim the prize, or sad that I asked the question?  Ah heck, karma either way.

I just read that 1 in 6 Americans have been diagnosed with depression, which makes it sound more like an extremely common personality type than a disease.

I have not been diagnosed with clinical depression, and realized after I'd posted that what I had posted could be perceived as such admission.  I might be clinically depressed, but like most sufferers, I'd guess, undiagnosed.    :bluesad:

Aside from us all being either alcoholic, drug-addicted, or medicated, I also believe that perhaps constant psychic and/or corporeal pain is a reality for complex organisms on planet Earth.

Title: Re: Karma to the first...
Post by: Mofo Rising on February 14, 2011, 12:52:57 AM
There are several board members who have been kind enough to post their experiences with clinical depression. There are multiple chemical imbalances that can lead to depression. For instance, a popular immunosuppresive therapy for cancer has been demonstrably shown to lead to intense depression. I think it must be very scary to have to admit that your body is sending you signals that are pro-suffering. Nobody likes to think that their brain is not their own.

I can't speak to depression though, my emotions are like a dully muted trumpet, so softly played I'm lucky I can hear them at any point.

I know I didn't answer any of the previous karma calls, but I'll give karma to the first person who can post a YouTube video of the most ridiculous cover version of any song that is a good version in it's own right. So none of that Pat Boone metal music.

Karma to the first person who has seen every movie in the Amityville series, including the remake and that awful Amityville Curse movie which had even less to do with the first movies than the relentlessly awful "true" sequels.

Apparently I'm the only one who has seen all those stupid Amityville movies.

Here's a softball, karma to the first person who has eaten an entire package of soda crackers without thinking about it. I love soda crackers, and get antsy when I realize I only have one box left in my pantry.

An entire package, or entire box?  I will go through a single plastic-wrapped package like nothing.  One spoonful of soup requires at least one cracker for me, practically.

I don't own any zombie action figures, but I intentionally disfigured a poor stuffed elephant to look like a zombie for a girl I know who loves zombies (and elephants.) Also, my brother owns a whole lot of those Tortured Souls figures by McFarlane.

For no reason, karma to the first person who has watched the entirety of a Jewel Shepard movie other than Return of the Living Dead.

Now I am officially impressed.  OK, I yield the floor . . . for now.

I played Snoopy in the musical "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" years ago, and we had this crazy director who gave us all kinds of background material to work with on our characters (ummm... it's the freakin' Peanuts - we don't need character motivation) and a big part of mine was a ton of material on the Red Baron.  Somehow, some of that info stuck with me - I didn't remember that I knew that until you asked it!

Okay, my turn - karma to the first person who has ever freaked out on someone at the movie theater who was being disruptive (talking, cell phone, texting - that sorta stuff).  And I do mean FREAKED OUT - not just, excuse me sir...
