Title: 100 Greatest Albums/Eps
Post by: diamondwaspvenom on January 29, 2011, 02:54:24 PM
Did a bit of searching and after coming up empty, I decided to make yet another "top 100" list. Now, despite my musical tastes, this thread is for celebrating ANY genre of music. Feel free to post any album or EP that you feel deserves to be on this list. If you feel like it, add a mini review to your nomination. If you don't, no worries.

Starting things off:

1) Venom-Welcome to Hell

Venom's first and finest. Although the music isn't very technical, even a bit messy in some areas, it makes up for it in speed, aggressiveness, imagery and of course in its almost tounge-in-cheek lyrics. In my opinion, had it not been for "Welcome to Hell", we wouldn't have had extreme, thrash or black metal. I know that's up for debate, but like I said: it's MY opinion. To bad so sad.  :tongueout: :teddyr:

4.)Pink Floyd-The Wall:

I also think Dark Side Of The Moon should be known, but between the two I pick The Wall. Also has a pretty far out trippy movie that goes along with the album.

5. The Glenn Gould Edition - Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier

Even though these recordings technically cover 4 CDs I think it's safe to consider them one album.  Some classical purists actually hate these maginificent recordings because Gould hums along while playing; I think that's what makes them special.

17) W.A.S.P.-Inside the Electric Circus

A very underrated gem from 1986, the same glorious year that gave us Metallica's "Master of Puppets", Slayer's "Reign in Blood" and Megadeth's "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?". Although Blackie Lawless (the guitarist/lead singer of W.A.S.P.) has stated in interviews that he absolutely despises this album, I really find that he should give himself better credit. This album is just as loud, heavy and raunchy as the albums that preceded it ("W.A.S.P." and "The Last Command"), albeit a little more melodic. For all its obcenity, "Inside the Electric Circus" is a fine album that deserves better credit from both Blackie Lawless and the fans.

correct order:

20) Pearl Jam-Ten
21) Louis Armstrong-The Hot Fives and Sevens
22) Bob Dylan-The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
23) THE BEATLES-Revolver
24) The Beach Boys-Pet Sounds
25) Ozzy Osbourne-Blizzard Of Oz
26) The Complete Blind Willie Johnson
27) SERGE GAINSBOURG-Histoire de Melody Nelson
28) PIERRE MONTEUX conducts DEBUSSY: the Boston Symphony, Nocturnes /the San Francisco Symphony, Images
29) Don McLean-AMERICAN PIE
30) The Pogues-If I Should Fall from Grace with God
31) Peter Gabiel -Peter Gabriel aka "3" or "Melt"

I had already posted #19 on the list. Nightowl accidently posted a second #19 (No worries dude. Mistakes like this occur a lot on threads like these) so the order kinda got messed up. It's fixed now.

The black sheep of the Sabbath albums that has been unfairly bashed by the fans. While lacking heaviness and gloomy atmospheres as the albums before it, "Senventh Star" relies on bluesy riffs, power metal-ish vocals and emotionally powerful sythns to get its point across. For that, it works excellently.

55) Kiss-Music From the Elder

Many of you may call me crazy, but I adore this album. "Music From the Elder" has been demonized and codemned by Kiss and their fans. Many sources claim and state that this is the absolute worst of Kiss' albums. Not surprisingly, I'm deeply opposed to those views and opinions. "Music From the Elder" is an almost complete musical departure from the traditional raunchy rock 'n' roll that the quartet has been known for. Despite incorporating an orchestra and a choir in the album, the music itself is very emotionally gripping and powerful (except for "Dark Light" which has a more "so awful and lame that it's actually kinda awesome" vibe). It may be different, but the difference is good.

Okay, I set the standard, but that's enough of you with two at a time!!   :bluesad:

Oh!  And you don't know sh!t 'bout PINK FLOYD.  Meddle or Wish You Were Here or even The Wall are superior to Animals.
I love Animals and listening to it now that you've suggested it.   :teddyr:

Actually, I think I know quite bit about Floyd. Been listening to them since I was a kid. I remember when I got high and listened to Animals - I thought it was incredible. However, I don't think The Wall was one of their best, it has it's moments but overall I think it's totally overrated - it was pretty much the Roger Waters show and it didn't have much Gilmour influence. The album The Final Cut was much better even though it was supposed to be a Roger Waters solo album., I think - more concise and depressing than the Wall even though it's critically maligned. I think the reason I like Animals so much is that it really seemed like a team effort rather than Rogers vs. Gilmour. I do agree with you that Meddle is awesome though.I really like Live In Pompeii also - I think the version of "Echoes" is better than the album version.

An incredibly underrated band. Every couple of years, I discover an album that blows my mind with its awesomeness. THIS is that album.

I'd say Wish You Were Here, by far, is their best work.  I'd second that with Meddle or Dark Side.

71) W.A.S.P.-W.A.S.P.

An incredible debut album that really packs a punch. Starting with the iconic "I Wanna Be Somebody" and ending with the sinister "The Torture Never Stops", each song is full of heavy/catchy riffs, headcrushing choruses and an ugly snotty charm. It may be twenty-seven years since it was released, but W.A.S.P.'s first effort has aged well. Any self respecting metalhead should have this in their collection.

If I were to be stranded on a desert island and had to choose which albums would I take, THIS would be one of them. What makes "Stream From the Heavens" interesting is the pace of the music. It's incredibly slow, even for doom metal standards! The band makes up for the slow pace with an atmosphere of dread and sorrow. Not to forget to mention that it's a pretty heavy album too. In my opinion: THIS is the definitive doom metal album.

This list started with a Venom album, so it shall end with one:

100) Venom-The Waste Lands
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ncKcjInuqfY/SbsFqv8GV6I/AAAAAAAACfA/dlf4L9_b7gA/s400/Venom+-+The+Waste+Lands+-+Front.jpg)
The Last album to feature Tony Dolan on bass and vocals. This is truly an underrated gem both as a Venom album and a metal album. While it doesn't quite up to par with Venom's first four releases, it comes quite close. If I could recommend a song off this album, check out "Clarisse".

Thus ends the list. You may continue posting if you wish. The albums/EPs posted next will be considered as 'Honourable Mentions".
