Title: Dondi (1961)
Post by: lester1/2jr on February 03, 2011, 01:46:33 PM

This is infamous for containing what some say is the worst performance by a child actor ever. Shock Cinema went further and said he was actually the worst PERSON ever. I don't know if I'd go quite that far, he didn't, say, cannibalize his own offspring like that guy in Africa, but there is something really annoying about him. It's like Andy Milonakis doing a parody of a child actor "You buddy friend Dondi yes?".  I can't really explain it. At one point I mimicked kicking my tv screen. The kid is like 7.

A bunch of "whooops!" tired slapstick prone soldiers are someplace in Euopre and Dondi shows up and they have to hide him from the sergent or whatever. then they go to America. It's low budget, silly, and awful. There is even a song about him toward the end. Definitely a must see.

I'm pretty sure I saw this (probably more than once) when I was a little kid.  It probably contributed to me becoming an unbalanced adult.

Yeah-me too. I had forgotton-like how a person who witnessed a violent act of murder may go into shock and purge his memory-but now I remember....gee,thanks Lester!  :bluesad:

I dunno-David Janssen made a name for himself in the FUGITVE and HARRY O tv shows, Patti Page was a quite famous singer back in the day,Walter Winchell was a famous newspaper colomnist and narrator for the UNTOUCHABLES,and Arnold Stang...well...he played opposite Gov.Arnold in the awful HERCULES IN NEW YORK.

Patti Page was the only name I recognized. I wasn't saying they weren't recognizable at the time, I was only saying there aren't any A-list actors in that bunch.

Where's the love for Arnold Stang?!?

I love his bit in IT'S A MAD, MAD, ETC. where Johnathan Winters destroys his and Marvin Kaplin's new gas station. He was also the voice of Top Cat and the Honey Nut Cherios Bee!

Walter Winchell was big on the radio. He was sort of an earlier version of Rush Limbaugh.

I sort of the remember the daily strip as being really ugly-lookin' and it was one I never bothered to read.

The film version of DONDI used to pop up on those 'worse movie' lists in the late 70s (anybody else have those great Irving and Amy Wallace People's Almanac 'Book Of Lists' series?) but I haven't seen it mentioned since then.

How nice lil' Dondi is getting sort of a bad movie rebirth!

#1 Best Seller, too!

I've never seen Dondi, but I looked it up and read a user review that cracked me up:

Quote
It was 1977. My brother was lying on the couch with the worst toothache of his life. All he could do was lie there hurting. Then my sister turned on the t.v. and Dondi was on. For half an hour, my brother lay there growing angrier and angrier at the sound of Dondi's voice, which has been known to cause heads to explode. Finally, my brother got so sick of the treacly parade of sap that is Dondi that he said one word in disgust: "Dumbi". The pain of the movie was worse than the pain of his tooth. My brother thought he suffered enough, but after Dondi came the movie Dunderklumpen. Let's just say he forgot all about his toothache.

I feel like I either know all about it from this review and have no need to see it, or I have a burning desire to see just how bad it is. My psyche is utterly confused.

Ozzymandias speaks: I'm intersted in seeing it just because of my interest in comic strips and comic books. I remember reading the comic strip.

Which brings me to an old joke? It has been used by Mad Magazine, Laugh-In and even an episode of Roseanne.

Did you know Dondi and Little Orphan Annie had a baby together? The good thing is the baby has normal looking eyes.

Ozzymandias has spoken!!!

I saw it on TV. I don't remember much about it, which is probably fortunate for me, but I do know I certainly liked it better than the comic strip upon which it was based. At least I found the film watchable. The comic strip--unreadable--and one of the few comic strips I did find unreadable.

The kid and Janssen were magical together. Seriously, I laughed pretty hard at this. I think my favorite scene was Janssen getting mauled by his girlfiends when they got back home from the war.

bumping this in honor of my "non horror sci fi" bad movies thread.

It's on amazon Prime and I wouldn't recommend it  https://www.amazon.com/Dondi-David-Janssen/dp/B000SW4DTY (https://www.amazon.com/Dondi-David-Janssen/dp/B000SW4DTY)

Wow, there's a Raffine quote in this thread.

I just read about this movie in the original "Golden Turkey Awards," where Dondi won the award for "most annoying child actor."

I have zero interest in seeing it.

It sounds like a cute concept for a comic strip & movie, but I can see how it could easily become cloying.

its way beyond cloying. Shock Cinema called it "the Citizen Kane of tax shelters" . tax shelters are films that are just made to exist as a write off for someone

REv- If you look at it as Japanese artsploitation it might become more interesting

I found this thread looking for my C Me Dance review. now theres a double feature from Hell
