Title: Equating Members with their Avatar
Post by: Flick James on February 08, 2011, 02:00:17 PM
A.J. Bauer mentioned this in another thread and I found myself realizing how much I do this. I know some members have posted pictures of themselves from time to time, but I still have such a hard time not picturing members as their avatar. I can't seem to unsee:

Rev. Powell as Robert Mitchum
Newt as Sigourney Weaver (although the nickname is Newt I can't stop doing it)
lester as a young Tom Hanks

And a host of others. It amuses me to think that others are this way and that at one point, when I had a picture of Rick James as my avatar that people pictured me as a light-skinned black man with long Jeri Curls.  :bouncegiggle:

Does anybody else suffer from this affliction?

For the record, I don't post pictures of myself out of concern for my fellow board members. I don't want the guys getting jealous and I don't want the ladies fainting and potentially injuring themselves. Call it an act of compassion.

lester as a young Tom Hanks.

Everytime I see Tom Hanks, I think Lester.
I kinda like it when people keep the same avatar, you get strangely used to them.

I still get angry everytime I see Lester smooching Daryl Hannah in 'Splash'...
It should be Doggett, not Lester...

I can only imagine RC as Lugosi. All right, from time to time I remind myself that: Hey, he's not Lugosi....oh, right...

I think of Doggett when I see Elvira. And that's his SIG, not his avatar.

I'm just glad nobody equates me to the Adam West Batman. I'd feel horrible about that.

Only thing is my avatar is supposed to dance but I can't upload a working .GIF file.

AHD as Willie Wonka.  Burgomaster as the Burgomaster.  Torgo as Torgo.  Paquita as a zombie dripping blood from her mouth.

I imagine DarkSider as Rick James.

I actually do look like Robert Mitchum.  Well, Robert Mitchum if you ran over his face with a dumptruck and left him out in the rain.

Actually I quite prefer it when people keep their avatars the same so I can tell who they are.  Something always seems off when someone starts posting with a new avatar pic.  I still think of Andrew as the bright green monster thingee, and I have trouble picturing him as Godzilla.

Huh? I AM Bela Lugosi! Really.  :tongueout:

I always picture the Rev as Robt.Mitchum. And All Hallows as Willie Wonka -(he's got that good natured/totally insane thing going! Gotta love it!),Trekgeezer as an old Capt.Kirk....lots,actually...and I have seen pics of them but still-!...then again-I've seen photos of some of the members, and I think of them that way. Dogget,Circus,Sister Grace,Trevor (of course, who has always used his mug),Now that I know what Bee's looks like,I have that smilin' face stuck,Ash, Dennis,Andrew-our mighty leader. But-actually-I identify most with their avatars.

I've seen pictures of Ronnie yet I always think of him as Lugosi. I also think of Rev. Powell as Robert Mitchum, allhallows as Wonka, Menard as a set of grinning teeth, etc.. Does this mean people think of me as the Radiation Specialist?

Ron is BELA, ever changing and always interesting and always LUGOSI!!

Rev Powell is himself... a "Ginger"!!

Darksider is the "I'll buy that for a dollar" guy.

Newt is SIGOURNEY WEAVER.

Doggett is Cornelius.

AHD, obviously Willy Wonka.

My first avatars were female: chibi Hinata Hyuga and Amelie Poulain :P.

I think my av from some time ago would be cooler to equate me with than my current one as cool as Torch is (Timothy Carey and Tiny Tim looking menacing is just more appropriate for me >.>)

Lester seems to be a common one. The couple of times he's mentioned shaving his head, my first thought has been "Lester's not bald, he's....oh, wait."

Still, Tom Hanks is an improvement over picturing him as the Small Wonder kid.

Most of the members who have a consistent avatar, I would picture as their avatar. Robert Mitchum, Gene Wilder, Sigourney Weaver, etc. The exception would be Darksider, who is the "I'd buy that for a dollar" guy. No matter how often he changes his avatar, that one just suits my mental picture of him. And Indy, who I picture as Teddy Roosevelt, and not as a mosasaur.

I also find myself, in at least a couple of cases, forming mental images based on user names. I'm pretty sure Flick James is not black, but his handle evokes that image. Fortunately, I know he's bald, so I don't picture him in a Jheri curl. :teddyr:

I think of Doggett when I see Elvira. And that's his SIG, not his avatar.

Is it bad that I thought Doggett was a girl when I first joined the forum?  Just because of the Elvira picture.  I've sorta learned now that people's pictures don't necessarily have anything to do with what they look like. :teddyr:

I've made the same mistake. Adding to the confusion, his real hair are even longer than Elvira's wig ;)

But I usually never equate members with their avatar (unless they use a real pic). I form mental images based on their posts. Somehow this works best for me.

My avatar is a giant brain. I think it suits me rather well, but making that costume might take a bit too much work.

I picture ulthar as Herbert West, Re-Animator. I have no idea what he really looks like, so that's who I picture when I read his posts.

Hmm. I think I have seen too many of the actual pictures, and for many the screen name itself builds a picture for me.  But a few do come to mind:

Silverlady is warrior princess.

AHD often does wear Wonka's coat and hat and Gene Wilder's woeful expression (But I am afraid I will never accept that he has a 'joisey' accent!  Never!)

The Rev: no; he does not look like Mitchum.  Not sure what he does look like, but I know it is not like Mitchum!

Mofo: funny but it is his screen name that gives me an image, more so than his avatar.

Menard: The Cheshire Cat from The Netherworld.  Yup: just like his avatar.

Gravekeeper: when I see that avatar, I see curly chestnut hair.

- now I have to go look at the rest!

As far as my avatar goes, my hair is like that (curliness, colour, length).  And I would totally wear that dress, but it's not actually me  :bluesad:

So not even the orange knickers belong to you?  :bluesad:

Of course the orange knickers are mine.................or are they?  :tongueout:

*ahem*

I...erm...

I think I'll have go give those back to Sister Grace...

She...well...

Oh, it doesn't matter. I mean, well, she was drunk at the time. And how was she to know Menard put a camera there ?

I actually look like my avatar. As a matter of fact, I am Nukie. The movie I was in was a documentary that's why we had constant shots of the outside of the Space Foundation and reported what was going on. I'm trying to make a sequel, but a reenactment an idealized non-fiction account if you will, where I return with my brother; he ends in Guantanamo Bay, I end up in Iraq. It will be called "Nukie 2: Searching in Iraq".

So what the late Sias Odendaal made in the 1980s was actually a documentary? The mind boggles.  :buggedout:

Hmmm, I was actually thinking Trevor's current photo looked more like a shaved Oscar the Grouch. Don't think I'd want to see him dipped in chocolate though. :teddyr:

Actually, Trevor, aside from the haircut, this photo makes you look a bit like another South African, the hilarious Sid James.

You have no idea how many enquries I get about the one film he made here named Tokoloshe [The Evil Spirit] but I always have to tell people that the 35mm film copy we have is minus a reel.

For my avatar, I am the toddler on the right hand side of the picture.  :buggedout:  :bouncegiggle:

This pic is actually from about a year ago, we are home during the winter because my son is sick (I don't even remember with what) and I'm checking my work emails from my kitchen. He wants to play with my computer (as well as eat my brains) so I pull up the cam and show it to him as a "mirror" trick to distract him eventually snapping this pic. It's as "au naturale" as you can get, I haven't showered, haven't combed my hair, I'm just in a plaid, he's in PJ's, but that's the beauty of a 200 pixel GIF, all these minor imperfections get lost in the bit bucket.

@Trevor - you may have explained this elsewhere, but what is the cause you went bald for?

The SA Cancer Association has a yearly Shavathon where people show their solidarity with cancer survivors and those that have passed.

I'm not a five year old, artifically created girl whose best friend is a two-tailed fox, but this is usually my expression after experiencing and viewing the various stupid things humanity does without shame.
Plus, well, I'm a cartoon geek.

I picked Howard the Duck because I like Howard the Duck.  And, I'm a bit on the short side, a little tubby, like my booze, and at times a bit of a smartass.

And, people I know at work, not knowing I post here at all, call me Howard the Duck all the time.  It makes sense I suppose. :buggedout:

Also whenever I read a post by AllHallowsDay, I read it in Gene Wilder's voice.

I can imagine AHD saying:

You're asking the wrong fellow.  I dislike pretty much every movie the guy did except Howard the Duck.

Not saying anything bad about the guy, per se, and he's got fans, but I just don't like the stuff he's done.

Mm.

Remember, Willie Wonka says: "If you want to view Paradise, simply look around and view it!"  I think ANTHONY NEWLEY wrote those words, and they're great.  Take heed!
