Title: In Praise of...
Post by: Mofo Rising on February 09, 2011, 04:01:37 AM
Okay, this is a bit nebulous for a thread idea, but I hope it works.

Basically, bring up anything you think deserves praise. Music education, knot-tying, the works of Ed Wood, Jr. I want to start it because I love hearing people talk about things they genuinely care about. It is so, so easy to disparage the things you hate. It is much harder to talk about the things you care about, because you actually have to put yourself into the conversation. The internet is full of "I hate" and it's something I find increasingly tiresome.

So if you have something you want to praise, please add to this thread. Talk about anything you want to talk about. My hope is that there will be thoughtful responses, and this thread will be continually reinvigorated by new topics for discussion. The idea may be too broad, so it may die, but them's the breaks.

To start off: mathematics.

I love math, and think it is an endlessly useful tool to have at your disposal.

Math gets a bad rap because it is something that is fairly difficult to learn. Math is also not helped by the fact that their are some very, very bad math teachers out there. By it's very nature, math is an anal-retentive pastime, and one bad teacher can put a person off math for life.

I don't believe that math is something you either have a talent for or you don't, but it often seems that way to people. In this way, it's very much like music. Granted, their are those who can pick it up and play with little trouble, but I don't think there is anybody who can't learn math if they really tried.

The continual cry against higher math is, "Well, I'll never have to use this in my daily life." There are a lot of things you will never have to use in your daily life, but that doesn't mean knowing them won't enrich your day-to-day living in unexpected ways. Learning the basics of calculus is incredibly dry, but once you get to the point where you can apply them and see how it applies to even the most fundamental of daily activities it takes on a life of its own. Calculus is an incredibly powerful tool, and one that applies to your daily life in ways you would never think about until you worked through it on your own.

But the number one reason why I think math is vital is that it is a boot camp for your brain. It's a discipline that forces you to account for all the errors your brain will make on its way to an answer. It doesn't matter who you are, or what problem you're trying to solve, at some point you will make an error in thought that you would never recognize unless you were forced to go back and step-by-step find out where you went astray. That rigor isn't anything people are born with, you have to spend time working it out for yourself.

My praise goes to everyone on this site for being so completely wonderful and prime examples of how good, decent and kind humans can be.  In a world that seems to be full of self absorbed, instant gratification, pop culture whores, the souls who populate this site give me hope that there are still those who value substance and good conversation over society's increasingly sex-saturated psyches.

I speak mainly of my recent romantic troubles and all the earth angels who reached out to me, a complete stranger, to give me words of courage and hope and support when there was no obvious imperative to so do.

Thank you hardly seems adequate, but I say thank you from the bottom of heart (and from the heart of my bottom as well)   :teddyr:

You guys rock!

You're welcome, sweetie!

My praise goes also goes to some pretty cool cats on the board (pretty much everyone) who share not only my love of bad movies, but other subjects too.  They also create some pretty awesome threads.  Fun stuff!  And thanks for some karma bonuses too!

Also, a little quick praise for Anthony Wong, star of The Untold Story and Ebola Syndrome.  What a hell of an actor!

Ebola Syndrome.

Russell, someone told me a while back that part of that film was shot in South Africa ~ is that true?

Some of it, yes.  About a third of the way through the film the soon-to-be Ebola carrier flies to South Africa to work at a restaurant there (and avoid the authorities for murders he committed in Hong Kong).  Can't get exact details on where it was filmed in South Africa other than Johannesberg (Gauteng) was one of the locations.

Dude, you gotta see this great flick!

Johann Sebastian Bach.  The man has always fascinated me.  The incredible volume of music he wrote, and the amount of genius level stuff he's got going on in those pieces, while still keeping it very interesting and emotional.  He grew up in a family of musicians, and worked at various churches throughout his life, creating the music to be used in the services.  He wrote it all using a quill pen, and even drawing the lines on the paper himself.  Working by the light of a few candles or a lantern, with a little wood stove for warmth.  He was married twice (first wife died if I remember correctly), had a whole pile of kids, taught school full time, getting up a 5 in the morning for church services, teaching all day, then returning to his wife and kids, and somehow finding the time to write all this stuff in the evening.  He was also quite religious and probably memorized more of the Bible than your average bishop knows.  He was an absolute master not only of playing the organ, but also of how they were constructed.  At that time, a pipe organ was the most complex piece of machinery that existed in the world.  He would travel to various places to perform a very thorough inspection of any new organ that had been built, making sure everything worked properly and giving a concert on it when he was done.  And as he traveled to these various places, he found time to rack up quite a bill at the local taverns   :teddyr:

Quite the guy.  Not only a genius, but incredibly hard working as well, and apparently still able to find time for some enjoyment.

TEACHING!

I love my job.  Even stuck at home with another sleet storm today, I miss my kids.  I am never happier than when I am rocking and rolling through the American Revolution or the Civil War with a class full of 8th graders, trying to make them understand how people who lived 200 years ago are still important to us today.  Every day I try to get the kids to learn something from me - and every day, I learn a little bit from them!  They keep me young inside.  How great it is to have work that I actually look forward to every day. :teddyr:

You're not the only one.  It is great to discover music on Youtube.

I also want to praise many things.

Everyone here on the forum for trying to make a civil home to discover obscure tastes in film.

I want to praise coffee for giving me that boost I need in the morning.  (In spite of any questionable side effects.)

I want to praise any cook or chef in the world for preparing things that bring us closer together.  Food is one of the easiest ways to take part in something that is foreign to you.

Japan for their zany antics.

So much more.

I praise the rare few people who were pro-semi-censorship during the controversy on my campus who actually explained why they felt nude art should not be displayed where it was. I don't agree with their views, but I respect that they took the time to reflect on why the subject made them uncomfortable and articulate their thoughts beyond "it's obscene" or "it's wrong."

I'm not a guy who knows music, other than being some dude who knows what he likes.

Reading the book Godel, Escher, Bach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6del,_Escher,_Bach) made me wish I knew more about it. The games that man could play with music, and still making it sound amazing is simply incredible. The musical themes repeating themselves, the same theme played backwards over the top of the first melody, just the best of complexity I wish I knew more about. Don't get me started on how much I like listening to fugues.

In praise of: Artistic Failure.

If you're posting on this message board, you know how fun artistic failure can be.

I love it when people who have the heart to express themselves creatively don't have the ability to make it any good. It takes a lot to put yourself out there for the world to see, and I get special enjoyment out of seeing their failure played out.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to be mean-spirited. I admire anybody who actually attempts to create art (music, movies, anything). But there's a lot of stuff out there that just fails. Fails catastrophically.

We live in an age of mediocrity. Mediocre talents aiming for nothing more than a mediocre romantic comedy. Thank God there are those people out there who shoot for the stars. The bungling missteps of theirs are fascinating and hilarious. That special sort of fumbling is what I seek out in bad movies more than anything else.

Sometimes when people reach for the stars, all that happens is they burn their hands. Sometimes, that's good.

I'd like to praise Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo for writing the Cheers theme.  It's truly awesome, particularly the full length version.

...Step parents (the ones who care, anyway).

Step parents get a bad rap, and they have such a thankless role.

My step-father, who passed away two years ago, was a great man. Not a good man, a great man. It wasn't until he passed away that I realized just how much of a glue he was in our family and the extent to which he was adored. He was truly a selfless man who was a far greater parent than my biological father ever was.

We fished, we talked about life, we disagreed, he coached my little league team, he even gave me "the talk." And he did all of this first because he loved my mother, but very soon because he loved us. And he did all of this knowing that, as a step, he really had no rights if things didn't work out.

All of his step-grandchildren have happily called him "grandpa," and one of them adored him beyond words.

When my wife and I announced to them we were getting married, he cried and hugged both of us so hard. I am so happy that he lived long enough to attend our wedding and hold my first son. He sang to him.

I'm getting a little choked up as I write this. If you've ever had a step, and if that person meant anything to you, give them a big hug and let them know that. If you're a step, no matter how much you may think your actions or behavior don't have as big of an impact because you're not blood. Think again. You will affect those little ones more than you know.

And unlike movies stores and newsstands, it's instant gratification, and there's a greater variety of stuff online.  The old Spank Bank is open 24\7 with the click of a mouse and a few good links

Well any praise is greatly appreciated, and thank ya' much, me dearie!

However, I learned "Spank Bank" from a friend of mine, and Heavy Hangers was a phrase that pretty much explains the state of naturally endowed women for whom jogging is definitely a risk, such as Samantha 38G.

Been brought up several times now, but in praise of food.

I hope you love food. It's healthy, it's necessary, and it is alternately very good for you and very bad for you.

When I'm really cooking with care, I like to pare down the ingredients and seasoning until I get the perfect mix that will bring out the essential flavor of what I'm trying to cook. I'll never forget the time I was making a meat stew, with a Guinness base. I slowly added in a variety of whatever spices I had in my cabinet until I had the best, literally the best, broth I have ever managed to make. It was so amazing I had to pat myself on the back. Unfortunately, once the potatoes cooked down all the starch leached out and ruined the delicate interplay I had previously accomplished. The stew was still good, but nowhere near the level it could have been. Lesson learned, cook the potatoes first in a separate pot.

At the same time, I am all in favor of eating the most decadent of foods you can imagine. Bacon cheddar cheeseburgers with three patties and a side of ranch for dipping? Fantastic. Of course, if you eat such foods with regularity, you will drastically reduce your lifespan and add more heft to your body than you may be comfortable with. But there's nothing wrong with enjoying a fattening cholesterol-laden meal every once in a while. Quality of life over quantity, and don't be afraid of taking those taste-buds for a whirl.

I'm also in favor of salad, but find it overpriced in restaurants and I'm too lazy to cut up all those vegetables myself.

Depends.  Usually its bacon or sausage with egg and cheese on a bagel, biscuit or croissant.

Pain killers. Just got a bunch of teeth removed, and without pain killers I'm in agony as opposed to merely putting up with a somewhat sore jaw.

I'll drink to that.  I was on Perkiset or Perkidans (forget which one) years ago when I had an impacted wisdom tooth on the left side of my jaw. It was pressing into the nerve of the next molar and caused me some serious pain.

I required an orthodontist for the surgery, and needed 6 stitches after.  While I could feel nothing the whole time as I was awake for it, I was somewhat freaked when the surgeon took a scraping tool to my exposed jawbone to even it down and remove any fragments. The noise was what got me.... :buggedout:

I couldn't close my mouth for almost a week and a half and it was soft foods all the way. Needless to say, painkillers were valuable asset in that time period!

I'll third that. I was watching Glory recently and this made me think of that scene at the beginning where Matthew Broderick's character is being treated for a wound and behind a curtain you can hear a guy getting his leg amputated. You can't see it, but yikes, it was an effective scene because all you needed was the realization that the guy had NO DRUGS administered to help with the agony. Thank you science!

I remember that scene. Good God, man!  And you heard the sound too when his leg was being amputated.    And if you've ever seen what a dentists kit looked like back then, it'll make you glad that modern day dentistry is a bit, I say a bit more pleasant...:buggedout:

Modern dentistry. I was warned several times that my face would be swollen and bruised for days and that I'd have trouble eating anything for a while. Well...most of the swelling was gone yesterday (day after surgery), the only bruise came from the IV they stuck in me, and all the feeling came back to my face yesterday morning. Other than really minor annoyances like seeing commercials for food I can't eat and not being able to talk for too long since my tongue rubs against the stitches and irritates my gums ever so slightly as a result, I'd say this looks like it's going to be a smooth recovery.

One thing that helped me big time was a huge cold vanilla milkshake immediately after the surgery.  My mom, grams and her sister (my aunt Dottie) took me over to the old Golden Skillet and got me a huge shake.

I would sip it, and them let it wash over the area, and man did that feel great...the colder the better.  And yeah, the feeling when you run your tongue over the stitches, hurts like an MF.  I've been there, brother.

...laughter.

I wanted to bring up this old topic I started to talk about one of the things I truly love in this world.

Laughter is one of the greatest things about the human experience. It's great in any form, but I'm not talking about the little giggle you get from seeing something clever. I'm talking about the uncontrollable laughter. You know what I'm talking about. I mean the laughter you get from something so funny that it is literally hurting you to keep laughing.

I don't care where it comes from. Maybe you've been up a little to late with some of your friends and everything is funny, or maybe it's some stupid thing you saw on TV.

I love to hear people laugh. It is the single most energizing thing for me.
