Title: The "I can't believe they're not in the R&R HOF yet!" thread
Post by: retrorussell on February 27, 2011, 07:18:57 PM
Hey folks.
Who do you feel should have been in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, but for some reason or other, are not in it?
Fire away!

Damn, that's a decently sized list.
I would add The Moody Blues and Chicago.  Maybe the Go-Gos, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins (though he's in as a member of Genesis, he was VERY successful as a solo performer).  Throw in Lionel Ritchie and Foreigner, too.

Didn't they announce this year that Alice Cooper was going in?

As for me, the following aren't in, probably never will be, but I'd like to see it:
Motorhead, Rush, Black Flag, The Misfits, Sparks, Rancid (when eligible) and "Weird Al" Yankovic.

I didn't know Alice was going in this year, that's cool. It's about time. They don't nominate enough bands per year and that whole 25 years after your first record rule sucks! It should be 10 years. And it seems like it's the only the people Rolling Stone Magazine like. Heavier music gets ignored untill the artist get really old, then they just put them in out of guilt. Guns'n Roses will be eligible next year and will probably get in, but if it wasn't for bands like Motley Crue leading the way, there would be no G'nR. If it wasn't for Iron Maiden there would be no Metallica, and Maiden still isn't in.

I would add The Moody Blues and Chicago.

Agreed, especially the first group.

The Knack

I don't know about this one.  They had one popular album and never had another big hit.  Can't see this as being hall of fame material.

I find that I appreciate almost all of the artists/bands mentioned. However, there are many of those that just never will get there. I've like Slayer for a long time, but while they're hugely influential over hard metal, they're just not influential enough over all of rock and roll to make it in, and I think that's the key. The have to have influence rock and roll on a wide scale and have lasting widespread appeal. Moody Blues and Chicago fit that bill, as both influenced on a wide scale and EVERYBODY has heard at least one song from each many times, whether they know it or not. Not the case with Slayer, as badass as they are.

I do agree with you to a degree about many of the artists mentioned.  However I don't know ANY Moody Blues song.  I do know some Chicago songs though.  They're decent enough.

Slayer's badass though.

Seriously?  You don't know Nights In White Satin?  Or Tuesday Afternoon?  Or In Your Wildest Dreams?  If I could post videos right now (I'm at work) I would; you'd have to remember those.

I think Slayer should defiantly be inducted, because they have had such a huge influence of Heavy Metal. It took way too long for Sabbath to get in, and they just got around to Alice Cooper. Metal music has had fewer inductees than other genres of music it predates like Punk and New Wave. Soul and R&B music tends to dominate, despite the fact that very little of today's black music has any real rock roots. The guitar, the dominant instrument in rock and roll is almost non existant in Rap and Hip Hop.

I remember the song Procession scaring the crap out of me as a kid: I had never heard stereo sound before, I was about five and my "friends" played that for me in the dark!  :buggedout: :buggedout:

Still, Justin Hayward and his friends have been friends of mine for years, despite that.  :teddyr:

I'll bet you've heard at least one if not all of the title retrorussel brought up, especially Knights in White Satin. Look 'em up on iTunes or Pandora or something and I'm sure you'll recognize something.

Hmm. I'm surprised, Happy. I just figured if you were familiar with Chicago you'd be familiar with Moody Blues. I've always loved Knights in White Satin but overall I've never been a huge fan.

I only know Chicago cause a guy at work has their greatest hits cd and plays it now and then.

I'll agree with Gram Parsons. He may not have been a wide-scale mainstream success, but his level of influence is undeniable.

Commodores and Cher.  Burt Bacharach I don't remember seeing, and maybe Todd Rundgren for his renowned production work.

There's a number of people in the HOF that aren't really R&R.  Mr. Bacharach I think deserves to get in because of his vast body of work as a songwriter.

I had no idea that neither Burt Bacharach or Graham Parson's weren't inducted. I figured they were. Tell me the system the criteria for putting people in isn't screwed up.
