Title: " I hate Hippies"
Post by: RCMerchant on March 12, 2011, 03:41:48 PM
This just happened to me today-I thought this s**t went out in the 70's.
I live in a very small rural town. I walked to the local grocery store about 20 minutes ago-I was standing in the check out line. A big guy-older-late 60's-wearing a suit-said out of the blue-"I hate hippies. I was in Vietnam." He said it to the lady-Bertha-behind the counter. I have very long hair. It was obvously a comment about me.
Now,I'm a very sensitive person. This p**sed me off. BUT-
I said-' Don't let the long hair fool ya-I aint a hippie. I got a stepson in Afghanistan, another who did time in Iraq. Your a hero-be happy." He kinda looked at me with contempt-like I was lying-"I gotta grandson in Iraq now." I sez-and this is true-"Jim got kicked out-because his job was to kick in doors and shoot-people he didnt know.Women-old people. Good luck with your life, sir."
WTF?
h guy was not from Lawton-(my home town)-it's a small farming community-we all know each other. I dunno whatthis shmucks problem was.

A lot of Vietnam vets carry pretty heavy baggage.  That war tore this country apart as no other conflict save the Civil War has.  I wouldn't take it to personally.

And . . . get a haircut! :teddyr:

Some people just go through life trying to stir up crap wherever they go. I live in a tourist town, you'd be amazed how many people come here and it seems like their sole purpose is to b***h about everything here and talk about how much better it is somewhere else. Chalk it us as one more douchebag that knows nothing about you except that your hair is long, and is miserable enough with himself as to use that as a conduit to channel his misery onto you.

Hey RC

This wasn't about you.  He doesn't know you, unfortunately you just happened to be standing there when he decided to vent his vitriol.

People make judgements about others all the time based on nothing more than how they look.  He made his mind up about you because of the length of your hair.  That alone shows you how idiotic he is.

Getting upset about an idiot will leave you with bad feelings that you don't deserve to carry.

*hugs* for you from me.

There's a nice addition to both the "grinds my gears" and the "people I'd like to beat the s**t out of" threads. I hate people who direct their insults through a third party. You got something to say about somebody, say it to him. Don't say it to somebody else loud enough for him to "overhear."

RC, you had no need to defend yourself, but it's good that you stood up to him. The guy was a coward and a bully, and he probably gets away with that crap far too often. I've no doubt he was caught off guard when you spoke up.

RC I don't think there was any way to handle the situation more perfectly.  You showed him up with a minimal amount of words.  His comments were not only idiotic and rude but unnecessary.

hi
I also have long hair though not as long as in my youth. I have had some rather thoughtless comments from parents and i still get quirky looks from people now and then.
I always smile when people make assumptions based on how you look and how you talk.
This guy was obviously not aware that you was intelligent enough to talk back at him.
I bet you p**sed him of a lot more than he did too you, well done and keep growing your hair.

Well said, Indy.  But with a lot of Vietnam vets, it IS personal, and with good reason.

This is not to say that this guy had the right to start something with RC, that was wrong.

But, to be fair to the bigger picture,  there are some hippies and anti-war folk who still won't see the truth about the hurt they caused to the Vietnam vets.

If there's anyone with a true personal beef, it's the Vietnam vet. The country still owes them a huge apology for their mistreatment of people who were forced to go out and fight a war they didn't understand.

It must also be understood, that it was the Democrats who got us into Vietnam, not Republicans as most anti-war folk still won't see.

Long before his death, JFK had military advisors in SE Asia, forming the ARVN (American Republic Of Vietnam) and training CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Groups) among native folk such as the Montagnards and the Viet Hmong (Hmong are also in Cambodia as well.)

LBJ and Nixon were stuck with the check that was written in JFK's day.  And we all know what happened to the Cambodians, most notably the Kampucheans and Hmong, for assisting U.S. soldiers during the war.  I wonder if Jane Fonda ever addressed that atrocity?

Anyway, now onto my turn in the barrel. Please see next post...

I'm going to make it a personal mission to go to that grocery store in Lawton to tell Bertha just how much I LOVE long haired nerds that are 5'2!  Just to balance things out a bit.

Sometime I'll have to tell you guys and gals about the time I was a cashier at Stop and Shop.

The check machine was busted. This one woman decided to take it out on me. She
went up one side of me and down the other with a list of names that would make a
sailor blush.  She acused me of making the story up because I "didn't want to do my job."

Apaprently, her judgement was that I was lazy and din't want to help her.

And, as she manually wrote out her check, she went on and on and refused to leave the store afterward.  She stood in the checkout line and continued to harass me and namecall until the police arrived after she threatened the store manager with physical violence when he tried to calm her down.

It's odd, what tends to set people off.  I've never forgotten that day.

Not to hijack the thread from hating on hippies, but you can add me to the list of people who are annoyed at you for no reason.

Back when I was a teenager I used to referee basketball.  One day in a girls match, I think it was either under 12s or under 14s one of the players who had the ball decided now was the time to be Michael Jordan and attempting to do some spinning pivot to the basket and in the process twisted her ankle and started crying.  I held up the play and immediately the coach, who was also the mother, ran on the field, stepped over her daughter and proceeded to lay into me about how it was my fault because I didn't do my job properly by not calling a foul on the defender, who was at least a foot away from the person at the time and didn't touch the poor injured girl.

I calmly told her I can hardly call a foul when nobody touched her and that she should attend to her injured daughter to which she yelled even louder and threatened to punch me in the face.  She was half my size, so I didn't take it too seriously as a threat but I then told her that she was now ejected from the stadium and should leave immediately.  After this she decides now is the time to look after her daughter who by now has tears flowing steadily down her face, saying 'I can't leave I have to look after her' luckily there were half a dozen other parents who were caring for her daughter at the time so I told the coach that her daughter was being looked after fine, but that she had to leave right away to calm down.

She spent the rest of the game standing nearby a door leading out of the stadium cursing the world to herself.

Now I understand wanting to protect her daughter but the reaction was not only incredibly abusive and rude but I felt so horrible for her daughter who probably just wanted her mother to look after her instead of stepping over her injured body to go abuse someone who had nothing to do with the problem.  Some people just walk around with a chip firmly wedged up their backside so far that it ends up on their shoulder...

As to the OP, way to stick up for yourself RC!  What a jerk...
