Title: What Makes You Unusual In The Eyes Of The World?
Post by: Killer Bees on March 12, 2011, 11:50:32 PM
I was thinking the other day about how people assume certain things about me that are totally wrong for reasons best known to themselves.  They don't have to necessarily be bad or nasty, but when people get to know me, they say, "You know when I met you I thought <insert odd assumption here>".

And so, in that light, I would like to know (because I'm nosy) what assmptions does the world make about you that are incorrect?  In the spirit of full disclosure, I'll go first:

1.  I'm a feminine girly girl, but I'm not romantic.  I find it difficult to be so, probably because I've never had men in my life who made it a priority.  I don't remember anniversaries or when Valentine's Day is and if it wasn't for Sean, I would probably forget my own birthday.

2.  I don't like romantic comedies (as a general rule).  I enjoy the odd one, When Harry Met Sally, The American President for example.  But when I see a romcom in the cinemas, my general reaction is, "Isn't there  an action/zombie/alien movie playing instead?"

3.  I'm not a shoe/clothes/handbag person.  Those things are all functional items and I cringe when women blather on about how they paid $500 for a pair of shoes or a handbag.  From what I can see, the higher the cost of these items, the more ridiculous and ugly they appear to be.

4.  I'm strong, independant and self reliant.  But my heart is very easily broken.  I'm very sensitive even though it looks like I'm made of teflon coated lead.  That leads people to believe that they can behave the way they want around me and I'll just take it on the chin.  WRONG!!!

That's all I can think of right now.  Over to you Bad Movie lovers  :teddyr:

A lot of people think I'm goth.. I'm not!  I'm a little dark, but I love rainbows and being happy.  I'm not goth, I just look really good in black.

I totally agree with you on 2 and 3!  It seems like just being a girl makes other girls think you're going to be into all the typical girl junk.  I don't really like romantical comedies with the exception of Overboard, Romancing the Stone, and Dead Alive, and maybe a couple others.  And I have 3 pairs of shoes that I got for less than $50 and 3 pairs of pants (yeah, I wear them a couple days in a row- so what!) and I DON'T carry a purse, it's just a bag with all my stuff in it.

I've often had people mistake me for a drinker (and I've never touched alcohol in my life)..perhaps because I have a belly.

Guys always expect me to love sports when honestly I have little to no interest in most sports aside from a passing interest in hockey and a strong interest in pro wrestling (if you can even call that a sport). I don't care for MMA which surprises some people but honestly it just seems too much like two guys trying to ride one another to me.

Most people would be surprised to know I like musicals and old romantic comedies.

I hear you about MMA.  It seems like they just want to indulge in a little man-love :bouncegiggle:

My partner enjoys watching it but he also enjoys joking about the man-love thing with me as well.

1. Complete gearhead, but I can't stand nascar (every other motor sport is great, especially IRL, Drag Racing, motorcycle racing of every kind).
2. Into tech stuff, but don't own a cellphone, and never have.
3. Again, I'm a complete gearhead, but prefer 4-door cars.
4. I really don't care for trucks.
5. I consider myself a pizza connoisseur (no joke).
6. I like to cook, and have some very high quality and expensive cookware, yet my favorite dish is Ramen noodles and chicken hearts.

People ususally don't expect someone of my appearance to be so intelligent and articulate with my words and thoughts. This was most prevalent in the 80's during my denim and leather days as a metalhead. It was suprising how many "normal" people praised me for "having a brain under all that hair and clothing."  It suprised even more when they found out I was and still am a non-drinker\non-drug kind of guy.  I guess being unconventional has it's rewards?

Aside from this "intelligence" I somehow possess, I guess my second most deceptive trait is that I'll watch movies and\or listen to music that many don't think I normally would.  I guess you could say I go from Mozart to Motorhead and back again, lol

Deceptively intelligent despite my appearance, and unconventional and equally deceptive in my diversity of hobbies, music and film. I guess that's my lot.  There could be more as this thread progresses and develops...

Ooooh boy, here we go…

1.) I hardly smile so people who really don’t know me generally take me serious all the time.  BUT, I have quite the sense of humor and people are generally shocked when they find that out about me.  I’m also very sarcastic so some people often think I’m being a major d!ck to them when I’m actually just joking.   I just don’t feel a need to smile all the time.  Frankly, I worry about those who do.

2.) I hardly watch any sports.  Matter of fact I think its silly grown men/women get paid so much to play them.   That and so many live vicariously through them.

3.) Going along with the first item, people think I’m straight laced and arrogant when they first encounter me.  (again, the no smiling thing)  Then people once they get to know me find out I’m into horror films, heavy metal music, potty humor and have tattoos.  People often tell me they can’t believe what they originally thought of me.

4.) I’m notoriously cheap when it comes to money however people are often shocked when they find out I’ve hosted several successful fundraisers.

5.) I’m actually pretty decent at baking/cooking and somewhat enjoy it.

6.) I’m big into vegetable gardening.

7.) I used to be an on air DJ so I’m pretty good at public speaking and writing.

8.) I have hardly a skill when it comes to gear/tech stuff.  I’m amazed if I can change a tire.

9.) Although I have three kids I love dearly, I really don't like kids.  Like farts I can only tolerate mine.

10.) Although I am completely afraid of germs, I have no problem going fishing or digging in the dirt.

2. I have a willingess to be perfectly silly and not care what anyone thinks.
3. I believe in God and the Biblical creation account; I also have no problem with the earth being 6.5 billiion years old.
4. I can find Indian arrowheads nearly anywhere.
5. I can belch all 7 continents.
6. I know more Presidential trivia than most historians do.
7.  I have the sexiest nostrils in the known universe.

I watch the same Godzilla movies over and over and over. (I could tell you anything you wanted to know)

I'm sure I watched the Goonies about a 1000 times now. (Cyndi Lauper's voice will be in my head forever)

I watch the same Kung Fu movies over and over. (I talk like the actors in the movies, it makes people mad lol)

I constantly quote movies. People look at me funny when I do so. (Hmmp, you go to Hell!)

I won't wear any kind of jacket but black leather. (I think I'm cool lol *wink*)

I like hard street rap and dark heavy metal at he same time. (That's pretty unusual)

I like PIZZA for breakfast, square tomato pie. (this is true)

I know all the Gilligan's Island episodes by heart. (brings me back. I love it)

Like Killerbees and Paquita, I'm a girly girl, too BUT I can handle a 22 rifle very well and have a concealed weapons permit for my Lady Smith.  I love target shooting, and about 6 years ago I was into archery and got myself a 6 point buck. Had to stop bow hunting because I began having problems with my shoulder.

I love the outdoors, fishing, hiking etc. I love state parks to go exploring. My dream has always been to go to Alaska, maybe someday.

I actually do like romantic dramas and comedies.  My favorite is Dr. Zhivago.  I love all the history connected with it.

I love horror/scifi movies both GOOD and BAD. The GOOD -the old Hammer films, Ray Harryhausen stuff, Alien, Predator, the Gillman from CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (fantastic costume design) to name a few.  The BAD (as in loved it anyway) - the guy in the rubber suit dinosaur movies, the Giant Claw puppet, the monsters with rolling eyeballs, antennas coming out of their heads, etc.

I pretty much like all types of music, but like the oldies from the late 50's and 60's the most.

I really don't
like talking on the phone,  Im not a great cook, and I'd rather wear a pair of old jeans than a dress anytime.  As a matter of fact, I don't even have a single dress hanging in my closet.  But I will wear a pretty ruffly blouse with a nice pair of jeans.

And I really don't care what the world thinks of me.   Only what my hubby and my kids and grandkids think. My hubby loves me with all my quirks. My kids think I'm a hoot and my grandkids ... I hope that when I'm gone they will remember when I sat down with them and drew pictures of butterflies with them.

I don't own a cellphone. Untill 2005,I didn't own a phone. Just didn't care for them.
I don't play video games.
I like all sorts of movies-good and bad ,BUT-I hate the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW,the FRIDAY the 13th series,The NIGHTMARE on ELM STREET (except the first one) series, superhero movies (except the 1966 BATMAN,ULTRA MAN, INFRAMAN,and yes-the first Power Rangers movie!),LOTR series,Harry Potter series,I don't like any anime. I dont like the STAR WARS movies.
I collect rare books-I have a 1st edition of Henlien's 'Doorway into Summer' it's selling on Amazon for over a $1000! A first edition of Henlien's 'Orphan's of the Sky',"Stranger in a Strange Land',and"Glory Road'. Also-Edgar Rice Burroughs 'Warlord of Mars' 1st edition-1919!
I dont like McDonalds food whatsoever. Except the hot musterd with the chicken mcnuggets.

Your secret is safe with us.

Along those lines although I love sex, I have turned down several women who have wanted it from me.  Nope not lying or trying to make myself sound cool (which would be hopeless anyhow).

Like DS, I don't smile much, and my sense of humor is very dry, so people often think I'm always serious. When I was skinny, I actually frightened a few people because they thought I looked mean. Now that I'm fat, I don't get that very often (fat=jolly or some such nonsense). I love that I can convince people of almost anything because I can keep a straight face (sometimes I have to almost force myself to smile so that others will know I'm joking). I have often been accused of being arrogant, at least until people get to know me (which, admittedly, takes longer than most care to stick around  :bluesad:).

I hate small talk. I don't watch sports or hunt, so I have very little to talk about with most men in my area, and talking about the weather bores me silly. I get along with women better. Little old ladies have always loved me for some reason.

I like musicals, sci-fi, horror, anime (to a degree), animated films, comedies (even romantic ones). The main thing is for a good story to be told. I don't like tear-jerkers. I live with depression and don't need a movie or a song to send me over the edge. My oddness was driven home to me one night when I found myself reading a book about The Wizard of Oz movie while sharpening a psycho killer knife (I collect knives & swords) and watching professional wrestling.

I like almost any style of music. My favorites are WWII vocal jazz, Dixieland, rock and some pop. I like Barry Manilow. So there. That alone is enough to be considered weird.  :tongueout:

I don't use profanity, drink, smoke, or do drugs. I'm a Christian, but that's not why. I don't like alcohol or smoking. I'm too much of a control freak (only over myself--I don't want to control anyone else) to lose control to drugs. I don't curse because it's lazy to my way of thinking. I enjoy much more stringing together nonsense. It won't offend anyone, and it makes me laugh, forgetting my anger. In traffic, when someone cuts me off or does something else stupid, I've taken to saying things like "If you do that again, I shall say 'Poophead' to you! Then you'll regret ever being born!" I figure if I'm going to rage impotently, I might as well make it entertaining...

Once people get to know me, they realize that I'm just a big goofball. I make no apologies for being such; I don't care about being cool or popular, so I am who I am. Those who know me love me, and those who don't like me can go sit in an alligator-infested swamp with bacon tied around their necks.  :twirl:

I could write about this for awhile...

I'm really big, both in height and weight (about 6 foot six and too many pounds) which I'm told can intimidate people.

I alternate between being really shy and really outgoing.  When I'm in a good mood, I can be friendly, chat with about anyone, and like to tell jokes and make others laugh.  Problem is, I'm not the best at picking up certain social cues and I have an "odd" sense of humor and this can cause me to say things that get me in trouble.  I keep forgetting that people don't know my intentions and can easy mis-interrupt certain things I do.

I've always gotten along well with most kids, but, I realize that as a single male it's best for me to not interact with any that I'm not related to on anything more than a superficial level.

I don't have a lot of friends, and I sometimes wonder if people can somehow sense my lonely desperation which, in turn, scares them and pushes people away.

Never really felt the need to drink, as I don't like the taste of most alcohol.  Never really desired to "stand out" by dying my hair, getting my body parts pierced, getting tattoos or wearing outrageous looking clothes.  I guess when you're my size, you kind of stand out without the need for all that.

I guess in short, I'm just too weird for the straights, but too straight for the weirds.

Well said, BTM, and thanks for that.

I'm quoting you because you sound a lot like me on many levels, other than what I described on the previous page. Sometimes you need to be reminded of yourself thru others.

Like you, I can fit in almost any social socket, so to speak, but have not enough of one to completely fit into the other, or vice versa.

This is where you really rang my bell:

I alternate between being really shy and really outgoing.  When I'm in a good mood, I can be friendly, chat with about anyone, and like to tell jokes and make others laugh.  Problem is, I'm not the best at picking up certain social cues and I have an "odd" sense of humor and this can cause me to say things that get me in trouble.  I keep forgetting that people don't know what my intentions and can easy mis-interrupt certain things I do.

Been there many, many times. I've been misunderstood a lot due to the same things.  It really bites when you spend alot of time trying to get yourself across, building a great bridge, and then having it collapse because you put one block where it shouldn't have been.

Again though, great post and you're not alone in this area.

I am a person who happens to be female.  I find the majority of people cannot grasp that one at all.

I do not have a lot of common ground with most women.  This is a major social handicap in a lot of situations!  Makes conversation challenging at times, but I manage.

My husband is the one who 'had to' have kids, not me.

I'm relatively good with tools of all kinds.

I am not at all 'girly', however I do not think I come across as being 'mannish' either.  I clean up pretty well, thank you.

I rarely wear makeup unless it is an 'occasion'.  Ditto for getting my hair 'done' (and it is my natural colour: no dyes here) Both of which make me very odd in my neighbourhood.

I spend a lot of time alone and this is fine.

I do not suffer fools gladly and I will not allow anyone who injures me to have a second opportunity to do so.  I simply allow them to be as/what they are and keep my distance.

I have been described as being 'overly competent': which is also a bit of a handicap/personal failing.   :bluesad:  My expectations of myself are high and this unfortunately extends to others if I am not careful.

I get along with animals far better than in human company.   (I believe I 'imprinted' on the family dog and cat when an infant: I was left in their company for extended periods in my 'formative' years)

People tell me they assumed I was quite aloof when we first met: I am painfully shy in person and this comes off as being stand-offish.  Yet I have a keen sense and enjoyment of the absurd - and end up embarrassing my children with (to them) alarming regularity.    :teddyr:

In light of the above: my sense of humour can surprise people and often confuses them.

I'm an oberserver - have spent most of my life being a what amounts to a 'professional outsider'; it can be a useful perpsective and has proved to be helpful to others, I think.

I am told I can be intimidating due to much of the above (apparent demeanor), in addition to my physical appearance/bearing.

(Shrug) I am what I am.

I love most weird stuff...so yeah, I love anime (but I tend to prefer the more serious sci-fi and robots style anime which many find more boring), pro wrestling, monster movies young and old although I prefer the older ones. I listen to all types of music but I have a strong love for punk and hardcore punk which most wouldn't guess looking at me. Most important to me is to feel comfortable in my clothes so I tend to wear T-shirts and jeans most of the time and when I'm relaxing, a T and lounge pants. I have a lot of coats and jackets for all seasons and I love most of them but I think my fave is actually just a simple hoodie. I could watch superhero cartoons all day long but I don't care as much for Family Guy and shows of that type. I tend to like Sci-Fi toons too. Most wouldn't know just looking at me how much into Sci-Fi I am although I often wear superhero Ts around the house.

What a deliciously fun topic!  :teddyr:

Not much time right now, so just 1 for now:

1. Every now and then, I'll go outside and practice falling down. Ridiculous falls, trips, and realistic looking ones. It's more fun in the snow and when the ground is soft.

-My Asperger's Syndrome
-My taste in dark clothing
-My lack of social contact
-My attraction to Anthropomorphs

Many things really.

But what is "Usual" to begin with?

Nice to know there's a fellow aspie on the board!

2. Abused as a child and raped as an adolescent: despite this, that abuse stops with me.
3. Grew up in a civil war.
4. I have serious issues as a direct result of 2 and 3 above but I am not hooked on anything except life.
5. I like children and for some odd reason, they like me too.
6. People who have kids and who are aware of my past will quite happily let me look after their kids as they know that I will sooner kill myself than hurt a child.
7. Film is my passion ~ especially really bad ones, that is the reason I am here.
8. I hate to use a communist term but I am an activist: for South African film that is (thanks, Mofo Rising)

I'm fascinated with taxidermy.  If it weren't for my wife, my house would be filled with dead stuffed animals.  Hell, I would probably take it up as a hobby if I had the money.

Although I'm a fan of dark, evil and morbid things I don't consider myself personally any of those things.  Matter of fact the idea of death and dying is rather frightening to me.

I'm a fairly non-social quasi misanthrope yet I work in a highly people-oriented career. I'm not saying I'm a total misanthrope in that I don't hold humanity in complete contempt, but I definately tend toward "I wish people would just leave me the f**k alone" much of the time. I want to spend time with my family, but that's about it. Yet, if you talked to most of the students I counsel they would probably tell you I'm a very social person and probably have lots of friends.

I'm okay with all of that.

I always thought it would be fun to be a veterinarian, and get a taxidermy license on the side.  Then I could hang ou a sign in front of my clinic that said: "Either way, you're gonna get your dog back!"

Oh a couple of things:

1. I don't or have ever owned an IPod.  I see why it would be cool to have one, but I have no interest in it.
2. I have a cellphone, but I only use it to call people or play Solitare on it.  Occasionally answer texts from parents, but that's it.
3. I will listen to any song once, no matter what genre, and not be put off because of the artist.  I want to give every song a chance.  As such...
4. I like Pop music.
5. Even though I like horror, I am too nervous to watch most horror movies or read most horror novels.
6. Even though I am guy who likes manga, I own a few series that are targeted at girls.  I give most things a chance to either impress or disappoint.
7. I also like Star Wars Episode 1-3, the live action verison of the Grinch & The Cat in the Hat, Larry the Cable: Health Inspector, and Cool World.
8. I find Blade Runner and most hyped classics to be overrated.
9. I never played any sports, joined any groups, or be involved in events in High School; I was nominated for Prom King & Homecoming King.
10. I have no interest in drinking at all when I reach 21.

Kind of unusual for this board, I don't really watch Kaiju films much.

Same here, and I hate when people make assumptions of you, just because you might get a kick out of Horror movies, or read horror fiction.

I always loved stuff everyone else (whoever they are) thought was weird, different, strange. Was told as a youngster that reading comics would rot my brain..still read 'em and loved them and they didn't stop me from attaining a college degree. Was told by many that wrestling was garbage but I feel I actually learned a bit about right and wrong from watching it back in the days that the good guys actually rarely ever broke any rules. Cartoons were filled with moral lessons. All of these things and bad movies too often provided an escape from reality which was a help at down and lonely times. Good to know now I wasn't alone in my love for such things.

That's not so bad. I'd consider you more unusual if you wore your shoes to bed. :teddyr:

I am seen as unusual in the eyes of the world, due to me being an unusual person. How? Glad you asked, for I shall elaborate.
-Classic/vintage/golden age cartoons are not for kids. They're for social misfits. I'm a social misfit. Thus...
-I find the Critters movies, Night of the Lepus, Chopping Mall or Alligator more entertaining than The Dark Knight, Titanic, Avatar or Star Wars.
-Pixar movies bore me, as do most CGI-animated films.
-I was the only student in my high school who knew who the Marx Brothers, Abbot and Costello or Laurel & Hardy were.
-I sing while in the shower.
-I don't watch TV, just my DVD collection.
-I don't play video games that much (I have a PS2, Xbox360 and a Wii...But my mom and little brother play them much more than I do).
-I prefer root beer to beer, and prefer orange juice to coffee

Been there many, many times. I've been misunderstood a lot due to the same things.  It really bites when you spend alot of time trying to get yourself across, building a great bridge, and then having it collapse because you put one block where it shouldn't have been.

Again though, great post and you're not alone in this area.

Well, I guess it's good to have someone to relate to, but I wouldn't really wish these aspects of my personaility on anyone.  The "misunderstandings" as they were have gotten me fired, investigated at my former work places, brought up on a misdemeanor charge (which were, thankfully dropped), accused of being various things I'm not, and cost me potential friends and possibilty a few dates.

Course, I dunno how much is my personaility and how much is simply a lack of social experiences.  When you spend a lot of time alone from early childhood on up to adulthood, you find yourself rather uncertain as to the "proper" way of interacting with people.  So many times I feel like I'm still an awkward teenager, trying to figure out what the unwritten "rules" are and how I can avoid breaking them.

(sighs)

I'm what was considered to be a very smart, bright guy growing up.  I was in Kindergarten and was reading books that kids in grades 6 or 7 were reading, and could comprehend what was going on.  In second grade I had a whole collection of books that high school kids read, and several books on Greek and Roman mythology and psychology and para-psychology.  In school I never actually listened to the lectures the teachers gave, and would spend all class looking out the window and drawing pictures, yet would get an A on the test.  In fact, I spent half of 5th grade not even going to class and passed with flying colors.  Yet, I had no desire to go to college, and had a chance at a partial scholarship.

In high school, I was considered partially popular, yet never attended any of the events in high school: parties, basketball games, football games, prom, dances, or graduation.  In fact, most weekend nights I spent at home watching wrestling or cartoons or late night monster movies.

I'm 27, have never ever been in a relationship with anyone.  Never even had a date.  Just not interested in it.  I think it's partially due to my own personality.  I love women, get along rather well with them, I just don't really fancy myself a people person and am rather quite selfish.  Most times when someone starts talking about things they want to, I get bored rather easily unless it's a topic I like, and at that point I take control of the conversation and don't let them get a word in edgewise.  Plus, it's hard to be in a relationship when EVERY woman I've asked out has turned me down.  It's always nice hearing "You're cute and funny."  Which, in other words, means "You're not ugly, but not especially handsome, but you make me laugh."  Or that old, "You're a nice guy, but" comes out.  I've gotten so jaded that I don't even care anymore and don't even try cause I know the reaction's gonna be 'No."

I don't particularly care for children, and never want to be near one, ever.

I had dates but never had a girlfriend until I was in my mid-thirties. Rather like you, Happy I was never interested until the last decade or so. I never went to my high school grad but instead went to relatives for the weekend and watched loads of wrestling and cartoons, which in retrospect I now know I did what I personally enjoyed the most. Honestly I found with women, as long as I was trying too hard to be friendly and nice, women never seemed interested but once I became more comfortable with myself (which took a while), to be myself and confident enough to not care too much whether I got rejected or not (which allowed me to joke and tease more), I had a lot more success.

Unlike a lot of posers who get tattoos or piercing or scarification in order to stand out, I went and did something really hardcore in order to show my uniqueness.

And I thought you Like Romancing the Stone because I have seen the movie enough times that I can recite lines and say what happens next without fail... :)

...Maybe that is what makes me Unusual In The Eyes Of The World...

Thing is, a lot of times I'm kinda interested, but every single female I've talked to has rejected me.  To the point I've started to like, despise them.  Not a good thing.  I try very hard, and they're like, "You try too hard" and when I don't try "He's not interested."  Most just throw me right in that 'friend zone' and even then, don't wanna hang out or anything.  Thing is, I've been told I'm somewhat attractive.  So frig em.  Nowadays instead of trying I just sit in my room and watch tv.  I'm well on my way to being the 40 year old virgin.  Only about ten years left.

Most people look at me weird especially in these parts once they learn I don't drink anything with caffeine in it, especially coffee. No not even Tim Horton's. I go there and I have apple juice and yogurt and berries.

Even though my art tends to focus on darker subjects (the macabre, alienation, isolation, etc), my clothes are dark, and I indulge in darker forms of entertainment (layman forensics, horror movies, etc)...I like girly things too. I've always got something growing in my room, I love planning and tending to gardens, I adore horses, think small fluffy things are usually cute, and like to dress nicely once in a while. I just can't stand the pre-occupation with looks, materialism and romantic obsession that society expects of me.

I can also be shy or outgoing depending on who I'm with. It's not even a matter of knowing a person well; the first time I met a good friend of mine, we just "clicked" right off the bat and had a four-hour conversation about all kinds of things.

Well let's see.....people seem to hate me an awful lot where I live because:

I have long hair
I look feminine
I don't wear "trendy" brand clothing
I don't go out at weekends
I don't watch films or listen to music usually made after 1992
I don't have any friends
I never eat fast food or take-out
I don't smoke or do drugs (never have, never will)
I'm not on facebook or twitter

Yep me too aside from my multiple online friends here and elseware.  I simply dislike human interaction with most of the population.  Which is odd because at work I'm Mr. Social out at every gathering and event.  However once 4 PM hits and I leave I turn into an introverted A-Hole.

Yep dude, at work it seems that I'm very popular as long as it's at arms length and everyone carries on their act of "I really care about my colleagues, unless things get serious". Outside of work nobody wants to know.
