Progesterone has been one of the only drugs that has been very effective at preventing premature births. It works, and there are very many reasons on why preventing premature birth is a good idea. The FDA just passed a rule proclaiming that KV Pharmaceuticals is the only company that can provide progesterone. Progesterone is a very easy compound to synthesize, so easy that it was going for $10 a shot. Now KV Pharmaceuticals is the only company that can provide it, and they have raised the price from $10 a shot to $1500 a shot. In one simple step they are demolishing lives. Maybe they are trying to recoup the research investment they put in on testing progesterone. Nope. The testing of the drug was done by the National Institute of Health. The NIH works on tax dollars. Your money. But maybe we should take their word for it. Progesterone production had no quality control. (It really didn't.) Now we can expect a reputable company is working on making it standardized. The last CEO of KV Pharmaceutical was sent to federal prison for misbranding drugs (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-03-10/ex-kv-pharmaceutical-ceo-hermelin-pleads-guilty-to-drug-label-law-breach.html). Make no mistake here, my anger is incandescent. This is one of the purest examples of evil you could dream up. |
