Though he died over 50 years ago-the cult of Bela is going strong- Little known Lugosi trivia- .In March of 1954,Ed Wood contacted a number of comic book companies (Quailty Comic,DC Comics-then known as National-Fiction House,Liv GleasonCmics,Ace,Dell) and tried to intrest them in a Bela Lugosi comic. To no avail :bluesad: Ironically-and happily-the new Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave is a hit! Bela played Dracula in only 2 films...DRACULA (1931) and in ABBOT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948) He played a Dracula type in MARK OF THE VAMPIRE (1935) and RETURN of the VAMPIRE(1942). He played the charecter on stage hundreds of times untill his death. Though both John Carradine and Christopher Lee essayed the role (very well,I will add) Lugosi is the definitive Count. Ask anybody to imatate Dracula-do they do Lee? Or Carradine? A movie not mentioned as much I really liked him in was The Dark Eyes of London although it was fully convincing with its final revelation. He even made stuff like Bowery At Midnight, The Ape Man, Mother Riley Meets the Vampire and One Body Too Many surprisingly entertaining at least when he was on screen.

He brought a certain zealotry to his roles that embodied the characters very well. You believe him in parts as mad scientist, vampire, zombie master, and others. He also has a presence that gives movies an offbeat charm. He did well in many parts but unfortunate he was never able to really get much further. He could have done more but seemed held into certain roles and typecast. While excellent for those roles, it would have been nice to see him stretch out of those roles. :( Never the less he was the perfect embodiment of the roles he did take on.
